SUMMARY:Design for Justice: Hip Hop Architecture with Sekou Cooke
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Design Atlanta as architect Sekou Cooke talks about his new book\, Hip Hop Architecture. \nAbout Hip Hop Architecture\n“This book is not for you. It is not for architectural academic elites. It is not for those who have gentrified our neighborhoods\, overly intellectualized the profession\, and ignored all contemporary Black theory within the discipline. You have made architecture a symbol of exclusion\, oppression\, and domination rather than expression\, aspiration\, and inspiration. This book is not for conformists-Black\, White\, or other.” \nAs architecture grapples with its own racist legacy\, Hip-Hop Architecture outlines a powerful new manifesto-the voice of the underrepresented\, marginalized\, and voiceless within the discipline. Exploring the production of spaces\, buildings\, and urban environments that embody the creative energies in hip-hop\, it is a newly expanding design philosophy which sees architecture as a distinct part of hip-hop’s cultural expression\, and which uses hip-hop as a lens through which to provoke new architectural ideas. \nExamining the present and the future of Hip-Hop Architecture\, the book also explores its historical antecedents and its theory\, placing it in a wider context both within architecture and within Black and African American movements. Throughout\, the work is illustrated with inspirational case studies of architectural projects and creative practices\, and interspersed with interludes and interviews with key architects\, designers\, and academics in the field. This is a vital and provocative work that will appeal to architects\, designers\, students\, theorists\, and anyone interested in a fresh view of architecture\, design\, race and culture.

SUMMARY:Goethe Geburtstag Picknick
DESCRIPTION:“Aber kein Genuss ist vorübergehend\, denn der Eindruck\, den er hinterlässt\, ist bleibend.” (No enjoyment is temporary as the impression it leaves is everlasting.) – J. W. v. Goethe \nHappy birthday to Goethe in Atlanta! \nWir feiern 45 Jahre Goethe in Atlanta – am 272. Geburtstag unseres Namensgebers\, geboren am 28. August 1749. They’re celebrating 45 years of Goethe in Atlanta – on the 272nd birthday of their namesake\, born on August 28th\, 1749. \nThe organization was first established in 1976 as a branch of Germany’s Goethe-Institut\, the premier German culture and language organization\, and after the German government withdrew its monetary support from our location\, we were incorporated as a non-profit known as the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta. They continue to proudly serve as the preeminent non-profit source for German language instruction\, heritage and cultural exposure in the southeastern United States. \nAfter so many months in the virtual space\, they are eager to follow Goethe the poet’s example and enjoy nature together with you\, your family\, your loved ones\, your friends\, and your dogs. \nThey will rejoice in the shades of a beautiful pavilion in Grant Park and under the trees\, where you will enjoy German music\, Brezeln\, and good conversation. You will hear Goethe quotes and listen to anecdotes of 45 years Goethe in Atlanta. There will be soccer balls and a Torwand competition\, and the opportunity for our students and members to share their personal experiences with Goethe in the last 45 years! \nMore than anything\, they hope you agree it is time to bring the Goethe-Familie back together. \nDue to health and safety concerns\, they ask that each party bring their own picnic basket with food and beverages. While there will be a pavilion with picnic tables\, space will be limited so we also encourage you to bring a blanket or camping chairs to sit on the grass if seating is not available at the tables. \nThe event is free to attend\, but registration is requested in advance. \nThey hope to see you there and look forward to celebrating Goethe (the man’s) and Goethe in Atlanta’s birthday with you! Because: “Nothing should be treasured more highly than the value of the day.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Angélique Kidjo when she returns to the Rialto Center for the first time in over a decade! \nAngélique Kidjo is among the most iconic and respected artists in international music today. “Kidjo’s reinterpretations rearrange the molecules of songs that many of us know by heart\, says NPR\, the results are glorious.” \nWidely recognized as the “Queen of African Music\,” she has collaborated with everyone from Alicia Keys to Bono to Philip Glass. In addition to winning four Grammy Awards for her masterful vocal prowess and innovative explorations of cross-cultural musical genres\, she has also proven a tireless advocate for women and children in her native home of Benin and across Africa\, serving as both an OXFAM and UNICEF goodwill ambassador. SUMMARY:"Of Quilts and Clay: African-American Applied Arts and Sculpture of the 20th Century" with John Daniel Tilford
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by John Daniel Tilford\, Curator of Collections at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art\, will focus on the rich artistic heritage of both the Gee’s Bend community of quilters in Southern Alabama and late 19th/early 20th century potters of the old Edgefield District in South Carolina. Once dismissed as purely practical and utilitarian objects\, the quilts and pottery created by these two communities are now heralded as great works of art. Placing such works in a historical context — like in “Beloved Community” — can help foster greater appreciation for quilt and pottery as more than just tools.\nAdmission is $10 at the door for non-members. Free with Petrel Pass.\nDirections and map: https://museum.oglethorpe.edu/about/directions-map/

We saw the mural as an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity along Buford Highway through the lens of the different cuisines represented along the corridor\,” Oppenheimer went on to say\, “It has already been so gratifying to see the way people are embracing the mural\, and to see the meaning people are finding in the images. Whether it be people identifying their favorite foods along Buford Highway\, to others reflecting on the role these dishes and this corridor played in their family’s journey as immigrants to this country\, this mural represents so much of what makes this community a special place.” \nHalpern Enterprises\, Inc. believes in the power of arts and culture to inspire creativity and spark collaboration. Without the integral partnerships of The City of Doraville\, Living Walls\, and We Love Buford Highway the beautifully designed mural\, and the enormous community engagement\, would not have been possible. Public art has the power to reshape the way people experience spaces\, and Halpern has seen this firsthand with the Pinetree Plaza mural. \nWith the creative talent of students and alumni at Cross Keys High School\, Halpern Enterprises will be participating in the City of Doraville BuHi Walk crosswalk project\, spanning 2.5 miles throughout the corridor\, by designing colorful walkway art carrying pedestrians from the sidewalks in front of Pinetree Plaza to the mural. This partnership would not have been possible without the dedication of the following Cross Keys staff: Denise Quintana Equity & Student Empowerment Director; Federica Teodori Art Teacher\, and Catalina Valdez Cross Keys Alumni. \n

SUMMARY:Traces: A Speech to African Nations -- A One-Man Theatrical Performance in French with English Supertitles
DESCRIPTION:An exceptional storyteller\, Étienne Minoungou stands alone against the world\, determined to talk to it. He speaks to give voice to the life he went through after leaving Africa to come back with a message of hope. He embodies the philosophical and poetic thought of Felwine Sarr\, who wrote this Speech to African nations like a vast odyssey\, a metaphorical journey towards a luminous engagement. His continent looking at itself and at the world\, in service to the future of youth. A text propelled like an experience built through constant dialogue and sharing between the stage and the audience\, to the rhythm of the actor’s powerful voice and of Simon Winse’s evocative music. A conquest that is yet to come\, written in both the past and present tense\, in the singular and the plural. This theatrical performance tour also includes Princeton University and Duke University. A post-show panel will follow the performance\, presented in collaboration with Georgia State University’s Center for Studies on Africa and its Diaspora (CSAD). \nPresented with the support of FACE Foundation\, Villa Albertine\, Consulate General of France in Atlanta\, Alliance Française Atlanta\, and Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta.
