SUMMARY:Angélique Kidjo - A Rialto Series Performance
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Angélique Kidjo when she returns to the Rialto Center for the first time in over a decade! \nAngélique Kidjo is among the most iconic and respected artists in international music today. “Kidjo’s reinterpretations rearrange the molecules of songs that many of us know by heart\, says NPR\, the results are glorious.” \nWidely recognized as the “Queen of African Music\,” she has collaborated with everyone from Alicia Keys to Bono to Philip Glass. In addition to winning four Grammy Awards for her masterful vocal prowess and innovative explorations of cross-cultural musical genres\, she has also proven a tireless advocate for women and children in her native home of Benin and across Africa\, serving as both an OXFAM and UNICEF goodwill ambassador. As the New York Times put it\, “She sings as the conscience of a community.” \nIn January of 2020\, Kidjo received the Grammy Award for “Best World Music Album” for CELIA\, a captivating investigation into the African roots of Cuban salsa legend Celia Cruz. The opportunity to see an international star of Kidjo’s magnitude in the intimate setting of the Rialto comes only\, in the words of her critically acclaimed tribute to the Talking Heads\, “Once in a Lifetime.” \nSecure your ticket today. Complimentary parking is included with this Rialto Series performance.

SUMMARY:A Rialto Series Performance - Pacific Mambo Orchestra (PMO)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University on February 19\, at 8 p.m.\, to see the Pacific Mambo Orchestra perform live! \nArtist\nPacific Mambo Orchestra (PMO) is a big band with an even bigger sound. Rooted in rich Latin musical traditions\, PMO expands and invigorates the big band legacy with an energy all their own. Since then\, PMO has only grown more dynamic\, with a remarkable stage presence that enlivens audiences and instantly converts listeners to fans. Released in January of 2020\, their most recent album\, The Ill Side\, draws from the diverse repertoires of the band’s phenomenal roster of musicians\, exploring salsa\, bolero\, and timba with improvisational flare. These masters of showmanship have roused jazz festival crowds from Monterey to Montreux\, and we can’t wait to dance with you here at Atlanta’s Rialto Center for the Arts! \nParking\nComplimentary parking the night of the show at the 100 Peachtree Parking Deck (located at 123 Fairlie St NW\, Atlanta\, GA 30303) is included with this Rialto Series performance. SUMMARY:"Of Quilts and Clay: African-American Applied Arts and Sculpture of the 20th Century" with John Daniel Tilford
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by John Daniel Tilford\, Curator of Collections at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art\, will focus on the rich artistic heritage of both the Gee’s Bend community of quilters in Southern Alabama and late 19th/early 20th century potters of the old Edgefield District in South Carolina. Once dismissed as purely practical and utilitarian objects\, the quilts and pottery created by these two communities are now heralded as great works of art. Placing such works in a historical context — like in “Beloved Community” — can help foster greater appreciation for quilt and pottery as more than just tools.\nAdmission is $10 at the door for non-members. Free with Petrel Pass.\nDirections and map: https://museum.oglethorpe.edu/about/directions-map/

SUMMARY:Pinetree Plaza Mural Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join Halpern Enterprises\, Inc. for a Community Mural Celebration Event at Pinetree Plaza on July 9 from 10:30am – 12:00 p.m. \nBuford Highway has a new landmark\, a vibrant and colorful mural reflecting the diverse community of Doraville. The mural\, painted by Atlanta artist Leah Abucayan\, is a part of a larger partnership between businesses\, like Halpern Enterprises\, Inc. and the City of Doraville to bring new and exciting public art to Buford Highway. \nEvent highlights include: \n\nRibbon Cutting from Mayor\nAuthentic food flavors from Buford Highway\nArt supplies for families from Doraville Art Association (Dart)\nScavenger hunt\nCOVID vaccination trailer from Dekalb Health\nAnd much more\n\nMatthew Oppenheimer\, Director of Acquisitions at Halpern Enterprises said\, “After seeing the impact murals have had in other communities\, we jumped at the chance to bring a mural to Pinetree Plaza when we learned about Doraville’s new public art ordinance. We saw the mural as an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity along Buford Highway through the lens of the different cuisines represented along the corridor\,” Oppenheimer went on to say\, “It has already been so gratifying to see the way people are embracing the mural\, and to see the meaning people are finding in the images. Whether it be people identifying their favorite foods along Buford Highway\, to others reflecting on the role these dishes and this corridor played in their family’s journey as immigrants to this country\, this mural represents so much of what makes this community a special place.” \nHalpern Enterprises\, Inc. believes in the power of arts and culture to inspire creativity and spark collaboration. Without the integral partnerships of The City of Doraville\, Living Walls\, and We Love Buford Highway the beautifully designed mural\, and the enormous community engagement\, would not have been possible. Public art has the power to reshape the way people experience spaces\, and Halpern has seen this firsthand with the Pinetree Plaza mural. \nWith the creative talent of students and alumni at Cross Keys High School\, Halpern Enterprises will be participating in the City of Doraville BuHi Walk crosswalk project\, spanning 2.5 miles throughout the corridor\, by designing colorful walkway art carrying pedestrians from the sidewalks in front of Pinetree Plaza to the mural. This partnership would not have been possible without the dedication of the following Cross Keys staff: Denise Quintana Equity & Student Empowerment Director; Federica Teodori Art Teacher\, and Catalina Valdez Cross Keys Alumni. \n

He speaks to give voice to the life he went through after leaving Africa to come back with a message of hope. He embodies the philosophical and poetic thought of Felwine Sarr\, who wrote this Speech to African nations like a vast odyssey\, a metaphorical journey towards a luminous engagement. His continent looking at itself and at the world\, in service to the future of youth. A text propelled like an experience built through constant dialogue and sharing between the stage and the audience\, to the rhythm of the actor’s powerful voice and of Simon Winse’s evocative music. A conquest that is yet to come\, written in both the past and present tense\, in the singular and the plural. This theatrical performance tour also includes Princeton University and Duke University. A post-show panel will follow the performance\, presented in collaboration with Georgia State University’s Center for Studies on Africa and its Diaspora (CSAD). \nPresented with the support of FACE Foundation\, Villa Albertine\, Consulate General of France in Atlanta\, Alliance Française Atlanta\, and Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta.

SUMMARY:Bruce Onobrakpeya: The Mask and the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Join the High Museum of Art for the first solo exhibition at an American museum for sculptor and printmaker Bruce Onobrakpeya (born 1932)\, one of the fathers of Nigerian modernism and a founding member of the Zaria Art Society\, an art collective that developed the “natural synthesis” aesthetic that came to define early postcolonial Nigerian art. The Mask and the Cross describes the artist’s creative phase from 1967 through 1978\, during which he created numerous works marrying Nigerian tradition\, folklore\, and cosmology with Catholic motifs and stories from the Bible. This period began with the creation of a series commissioned by the Catholic Church titled Fourteen Stations of the Cross\, which depicts scenes from the last earthly day of Jesus Christ. Onobrakpeya portrays Biblical characters as Nigerian and reimagines Biblical scenes in Nigerian settings. This exhibition will consider religious “double belonging” as an exercise in agency\, subversion\, and cultural resilience. Grounded in the High’s own edition of Onobrakpeya’s Fourteen Stations of the Cross prints\, The Mask and the Cross will showcase other works from this period\, as well as examples from later periods\, as themes of religious hybridity and multiplicity continue to appear throughout the artist’s sixty-year career.

SUMMARY:"Put yourself in my shoes": Writing\, Home\, and Displacement
DESCRIPTION:The news is full of images and stories of people having to flee their homes because of war\, hunger\, or disease. Many of us have normalized the sight to such an extent that we barely notice it anymore. But what does it feel like to actually have to leave your home and everything – also often everyone – you love and care about behind? What would it feel like for all of us\, had we been forced to abandon our place of origin\, without the choice of going back? \n\n\n\nIn this writing workshop\, “Put yourself in my shoes”: Writing\, Home\, and Displacement\, participants will be led by Nicoletta Demetriou\, who will draw from her experience as a “refugee child\,” and as an ethnographer of the refugee condition\, to ask participants\, through a series of prompts and texts\, to reflect on these difficult issues\, put themselves in the shoes of a displaced person\, and write about it. \n\n\n\nNicoletta – an ethnomusicologist\, singer\, and writing coach from Cyprus – has been teaching similar writing workshops for Greek and Turkish Cypriots walking and writing together in Nicosia’s buffer zone for the past ten years. Writing becomes a means for people to express their feelings\, tell their story (first to themselves\, on the page\, and then to others)\, be heard\, but also listen to the stories of others. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited and registration is required. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The workshop will be held in the Board Room. \n\n\n\nFee: $30 for members\, $40 for nonmembers\, Free for Emory students.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor:  \n\n\n\nNicoletta Demetriou was born and raised in Nicosia\, the divided capital of Cyprus. She studied music in Thessaloniki\, Vienna\, and London\, obtaining a PhD in Ethnomusicology from SOAS\, University of London. She subsequently studied for an MA in Life Writing at the University of East Anglia\, and has since combined her passion for music and writing in her teaching. From 2012 to 2019 she was research fellow in ethnomusicology and life writing at Wolfson College\, Oxford\, and tutor in narrative non-fiction on Oxford’s postgraduate program in Creative Writing. In 2017 she was a Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at Stockton University\, NJ\, and in 2019 a Visiting Fellow at the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton. Since 2022\, she has been director of Cyprus Music Archive\, The Writing Room (a community writing space in Nicosia)\, and Topos Retreat (a writing retreat on the mountains of Cyprus). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:A Musical Journey to Cyprus: Traditional Songs of Love\, Sorrow\, and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, Cyprus has been variously described as ‘the island of love’\, ‘the birthplace of Aphrodite’\, ‘the blessed isle’\, ‘the land of lemon and olive trees’\, among many other things. But in the past half century\, Cyprus has also been known as a land of pain and sorrow; an island of division and loss. \n\n\n\nOn this ‘Musical Journey to Cyprus\,’ Nicoletta Demetriou (voice)\, Nikitas Tampakis (viola)\, Roger Mgrdichian (oud)\, and Panayotis League (laouto and perscussion) explore this varied identity\, as expressed through the island’s music and song. \n\n\n\nJoin these accomplished musicians on an imaginary journey to Cyprus\, as they sing about the joys and intricacies of love\, the pain and sorrow of loss\, and the hope for better days to come. \n\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the public.
