SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Luncheon and Discussion: Japan's Evolving Defense Policy: Implications for the U.S.-Japan Alliance and Asian Security with Ryo Kiridori
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLATION NOTICE: Global Atlanta has been informed that this event has been cancelled by the ACIR \n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, Japan has significantly updated its defense policy. In 2015\, the government partially lifted restrictions on the exercise of collective self-defense. Since 2022\, the defense budget has grown rapidly\, and the Self-Defense Force has expanded its ability to project power far beyond Japan’s immediate territory. These represent significant shifts that would have been unimaginable only a few decades ago. How should we understand these developments? To what extent has Japan’s defense policy shifted from its previous course? What do these reforms mean for the U.S.–Japan Alliance and for peace and stability in the Western Pacific? What objectives is Japan seeking to achieve through these defense policy upgrades\, and what challenges does it face? This luncheon will examine these questions to provide a deeper understanding of Japan’s evolving defense posture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRyo Kiridori\, Research Fellow\, National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS)\nRyo Kiridori is a research fellow at the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS)\, which he joined in 2016. From 2018 to 2019\, he was cross appointed to the Defense Ministry’s Defense Policy Bureau\, where he was engaged in drafting Japan’s mid-to-long-term defense strategy called National Defense Program Guidelines (now called National Defense Strategy) as well as in various policy-level strategic dialogues\, including the Japan-US Extended Deterrence Dialogue. His research interests cover security studies and foreign policy analysis. He has recently written a chapter in a book about lessons from Ukraine to Taiwan\, published in 2025. \n\n\n\nHe is currently working on multiple research projects\, including one about security implications of the spread of precision strike capabilities in the Indo-Pacific and a research that reassesses the role of the bureaucracy in Japan’s defense policy evolution. He holds a BA in political science from the University of New Brunswick in Canada and an MSc in International Relations from London School of Economics and Political Science. He is currently a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Toronto. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series -Navigating Uncertainty: Dynamic Capabilities and Entrepreneurial Opportunities in a Volatile World
DESCRIPTION:In today’s global business landscape—marked by geopolitical tensions\, market instability\, and institutional flux—uncertainty has become the norm. Yet for entrepreneurial firms\, disruption can also create space for innovation and opportunity. In this webinar\, the presenters will share findings from research with SMEs in China and Tunisia—two emerging markets often characterized by volatility and institutional change. They explore how dynamic capabilities\, such as resource reconfiguration\, intelligence acquisition\, and cross-border coordination\, can support firms in navigating disruption through both opportunity creation and discovery. While the data is grounded in specific emerging market contexts\, the speakers aim to remain transparent about what their findings can and cannot speak to directly. Rather than drawing universal conclusions\, participants are invited to reflect on how these theoretical insights may serve as a starting point for broader thinking about strategy\, innovation\, and resilience in today’s uncertain world. Following a brief presentation\, the hosts will facilitate a wider conversation with the audience\, exploring timely questions such as: How might geopolitical and institutional shifts open up new “white spaces”—that is\, previously unserved or underserved entrepreneurial opportunities? What are the strategic trade-offs between creating and discovering opportunities—and what are the risks of doing both simultaneously? How do cultural distance and globalization shape the boundaries of what firms can pursue? \n\n\n\nTakeaways: \n\n\n\nTurbulence Breeds Opportunity—But Only for the Strategically Prepared. SMEs with dynamic capabilities can uncover “white space” opportunities amid global conflict and trade tension. \n\n\n\nCreation vs. Discovery: Choose Your Path Wisely. Opportunity creation and discovery require different strategies—doing both at once can hurt performance. \n\n\n\nContext Matters. Cultural distance and industry globalization strongly influence which strategy will work best. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Culture need not be spooky: The Skeletons in the Closet — Fear\, Silence\, and Cultural Taboos
DESCRIPTION:Every global team has a few skeletons in the closet. Unspoken assumptions. Awkward silences. “We thought they meant yes.” These moments are not spooky. They are predictable. And expensive. \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, October 28 in Atlanta\, GA\, The Culture Mastery is hosting a fast-moving\, hands-on workshop: \n\n\n\nWhat you will walk away with:\n\n\n\n\nIdentify your cultural values and how they play out in meetings\, emails\, and decisions\n\n\n\nCompare U.S. norms with key partners in Germany\, Mexico\, India\, or Nigeria\n\n\n\nSee how culture impacts every area of business from timelines to risk to hierarchy\n\n\n\nA set of tips and strategies you can apply the next day for smoother collaboration and sustainable growth across borders\n\n\n\n\nWhat this session will help you avoid:\n\n\n\n\nReal-life costly culture clashes that blow up projects\n\n\n\nIgnoring the gap between intention and interpretation\n\n\n\nFalse similarity assumptions that derail trust\n\n\n\nThe painful embarrassment of miscommunication in front of clients and leadership\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend:\n\n\n\nLeaders in international roles\, sales and sourcing\, HR and L&D\, project managers\, and anyone who has to get results with people who do not think or decide like you. \n\n\n\nWhy now:\n\n\n\nOctober is a good time to de-risk Q4 interactions and plan 2026. One day with your team can save months of “lost in translation.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer
