SUMMARY:Preventing the Unthinkable: India & Pakistan’s Nuclear Standoff - Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Atlanta is hosting a series of virtual dialogues focusing on the United States’ ongoing foreign policy re-directs under the Trump Administration. Amb. (ret.) Charles Shapiro\, President Emeritus of the Council and former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela\, will lead each dialogue with world-class experts in their fields of study and practice. \n\n\n\nTopic Summary \n\n\n\n In May 2025\, India and Pakistan narrowly avoided a full-scale war after a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir triggered a rapid military escalation. The crisis\, which included airstrikes\, missile exchanges\, drone warfare\, and cyber operations\, was defused through a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10. Despite the de-escalation\, cross-border violations persist\, and tensions remain high. Both nations signaled their nuclear capabilities during the standoff—Pakistan convened its National Command Authority\, while India reaffirmed its stance against nuclear blackmail. Former Georgia U.S. Senator Sam Nunn has long warned that the most alarming nuclear threat lies in the volatile relationship between India and Pakistan. These two large\, multiethnic\, developing nations have a history of deep-seated animosity rooted in the 1947 partition of British India. Since then\, they have fought four wars and engaged in numerous skirmishes\, with Kashmir remaining the most contentious flashpoint. \n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Aparna Pande\nDirector of the Initiative on the Future of India and South Asia at the Hudson Institute\, Washington D.C. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Shapiro\nExpert panelist and Ambassador \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRickey Bevington\nPresident of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Tariffs\, Supply Chain\, and Transfer Pricing Strategies Seminar
DESCRIPTION:In January 2025\, the second Trump administration was inaugurated in the United States. SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: Murata: Tiny Parts\, Huge Impact on Global Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:When things are going right\, the small things are easy to ignore. Not so when supply chains are stressed — the essential becomes magnified\, no matter how tiny. \n\n\n\nThat’s what happened with Murata\, who in 1973 became one of the earliest Japanese investors in Georgia\, setting up a plant to make capacitors in car radios. The Kyoto-based company\, now with global annual revenues of approximately $1.7 Trillion yen\, holds about 40 percent of the world’s market share for capacitors\, small ceramic parts produced by the trillions each year to store and release power within electronic devices. \n\n\n\nWhen a tsunami hit Japan’s northeast coast in 2011 and an earthquake shook the country\, electronics supply chains were scrambled. Everything\, from cell phones and digital cameras to appliances and EVs\, relies in some way on Murata’s parts — more than 1\,000 go into a typical smartphone and potentially 30\,000+ slated for a fully autonomous electric vehicle. \n\n\n\nMurata had already been diversifying its sourcing around the world\, including in Southeast Asia\, to be closer to end customers. It also deepened research spending to ensure it could serve advanced industries\, like increasingly computerized cars\, with innovative solutions. That blend of diversification and R&D continues today. Murata Electronics North America\, meanwhile\, has a new headquarters in Atlanta\, Ga.\, and maintains a distribution center in Rockmart\, Ga. \n\n\n\nToday\, an uncertain global trade landscape threatens to inflict another shock to supply chains around the world. Join GSU-CIBER and Global Atlanta to hear from Murata Electronics North America’s CEO\, David Kirk\, on how the company is dealing with increasing volatility in high-value industries where the smallest parts can make the biggest impact. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Kirk\, VP\, Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd.President & CEO\, Murata Electronics North America\nDavid is responsible for various functions within the Americas including Sales/Marketing\, Operations and Corporate Technology\, and Innovation. The Americas is a critical region for design-in activity that results in Global Sales within the Electronics industry. Murata has made multiple acquisitions and integrations on a global basis including Peregrine Semiconductor (pSemi)\, Vios Medical\, Eta Wireless\, Resonant\, and RF Monolithics (RFM). \n\n\n\nHe started his career as a Product Engineer with Murata and moved into the Director of Marketing role. He then became President and CEO of RFM\, which was a public company from 1999 to 2011. Upon coming back to Murata in 2012\, he was instrumental in RFM’s acquisition by the parent company in Japan. \n\n\n\nDavid is the first non-Japanese person to lead Murata in the Americas and become an officer of the parent company Murata Manufacturing Company headquartered in Kyoto\, Japan.  \n\n\n\nHe came to the United States in the late 1970s on a track scholarship and graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in Electrical Engineering. \n\n\n\nDavid and his wife\, Tammi\, have four grown children and live in McKinney\, TX (in the Dallas area). His hobbies include golfing\, hiking\, cycling (gravel)\, fishing\, and their seven grandchildren. \n\n\n\nDavid enjoys the challenge of globalizing Murata and specifically mentoring the next generation of leaders in following the company’s philosophy of contributing to the advancement of society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey takeaways:  \n\n\n\n\nHow Murata has diversified its manufacturing locations around the world in partnership with customers and what that has meant for the company’s U.S. operations\n\n\n\n\n\nMurata’s approach to continuous improvement in research and development\, its moves up the value chain over the last 50 years\, and efforts to showcase innovation in relatable ways like robots and other consumer-facing items\n\n\n\n\n\nThe company’s approach to trade uncertainty and supply chain volatility and how the company balances its Japanese sensibilities\, including long-term strategy\, with a nimble approach in global markets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Democracy and Authoritarianism in Pakistan’s Electoral Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Atlanta hosts Arif Alvi\, MD\, former President of Pakistan\, for an intimate dialogue about the state of democracy in the country with the world’s 5th largest population. \n\n\n\nPakistan’s democratic development and political stability continue to face significant challenges due to entrenched military interests within the government and widespread public distrust in the electoral process. The 2024 elections were particularly problematic\, with substantial delays in the release of official results\, leading to widespread allegations of rigging and vote manipulation. Election periods are often marred by violence and security threats\, including attacks by militant groups like the Islamic State targeting election offices. The political landscape remains highly volatile\, marked by frequent legal disputes and the arrest of prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Imran Khan\, which has sparked widespread protests and further instability. Additionally\, Pakistan’s military has increasingly consolidated its control over government leaders and functions\, further complicating efforts to achieve democratic governance and political stability.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:'From Nuclear Modernization to the Stone Age' - Luncheon Panel With the Daisy Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear weapons have not been used since the US attacks on Japan in August 1945. As global tensions continue to rise\, analysts believe we are closer to nuclear war than at any time since—the famous ‘Doomsday Clock’ now stands at 89 seconds to midnight. The United States\, China\, and Russia are all currently modernizing and increasing the size of their nuclear arsenals\, with the US on track to spend over $1.5 billion on the project.  \n\n\n\nThere are already over 12\,000 nuclear weapons in the world\, according to Stockholm International Peace Research’s (SIPRI) 2024 estimates—almost 90% are possessed by the US and Russia alone. Nuclear modernization and expansion will almost certainly lead to destabilizing arms races. When combined with numerous dangerous regional conflicts around the world\, modernization could easily escalate future conflicts by legitimizing the limited use of nuclear weapons.  \n\n\n\nThis panel features three experts from Daisy Alliance\, an Atlanta based nuclear disarmament advocacy organization\, who will discuss the impacts of the US nuclear modernization program. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nGregory Hall\, Executive Director\, will discuss nuclear modernization and proliferation issues in the context of politics among the great powers and regional powers.  \n\n\n\nHolly Lindamood\, Associate Director\, will examine nuclear modernization through the lens of human security\, focusing on the impacts to economic\, heath\, environmental\, and social security.  \n\n\n\nChuck Powell\, Board Member\, will discuss various efforts over time at nuclear modernization and attendant financial\, technical\, and political issues.  \n\n\n\nYou Must Register to Attend  \n\n\n\nRegistration Closes Friday\, April 4th\, at 10 am \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:2025 Dunwoody Virtual Great Decisions Lecture Series – U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy
DESCRIPTION:The annual 2025 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 6 – March 27\, 2025 at 7:00 PM. There is a fee to register for the virtual lecture series\, and registration is required to receive the event link. \n\n\n\nTopic: U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy \n\n\n\nUnder President Biden\, the U.S. has advanced new ideas about trade\, technology\, industrial policy\, competition with China\, and the organization of the world economy. For most of the postwar era\, the U.S. has tied its global leadership to cooperative agendas aimed at creating a more open-world trading system\, but that has apparently come to an end. What are America’s options and opportunities as a leader of the world economy? How will America’s “foreign policy for the middle class” and strategic competition with China impact its leadership role? How can the postwar rules and institutions of the world economy be made safe for economic nationalism and great power competition? \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Stephen Collins\, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs\, Kennesaw State University (KSU) \n\n\n\nPlease note\, topics and speakers are subject to change dates. \n\n\n\nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year.
