SUMMARY:2025 Dunwoody Virtual Great Decisions Lecture Series – U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy
DESCRIPTION:The annual 2025 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 6 – March 27\, 2025 at 7:00 PM. There is a fee to register for the virtual lecture series\, and registration is required to receive the event link. \n\n\n\nTopic: U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy \n\n\n\nUnder President Biden\, the U.S. has advanced new ideas about trade\, technology\, industrial policy\, competition with China\, and the organization of the world economy. For most of the postwar era\, the U.S. has tied its global leadership to cooperative agendas aimed at creating a more open-world trading system\, but that has apparently come to an end. What are America’s options and opportunities as a leader of the world economy? How will America’s “foreign policy for the middle class” and strategic competition with China impact its leadership role? How can the postwar rules and institutions of the world economy be made safe for economic nationalism and great power competition? \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Stephen Collins\, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs\, Kennesaw State University (KSU) \n\n\n\nPlease note\, topics and speakers are subject to change dates. \n\n\n\nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. SUMMARY:From Enemies to “Tacit Allies:” Zhou Enlai and Sino-American Relations
DESCRIPTION:A Book Talk with Dr. Chen Jian\n\n\n\nDr. CHEN Jian is the Director of the NYU Shanghai-ECNU Center on Global History\, Economy and Culture\, Distinguished Global Network Professor of History at NYU Shanghai and NYU\, Hu Shih Professor Emeritus at Cornell University\, Zijiang Distinguished Visiting Professor at East China Normal University\, and Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center. His seminal biography of Zhou Enlai\, was published by Harvard University Press. \n\n\n\nZhou Enlai\, China’s premier of 27 years\, was a central actor in the making of the Sino-American Rapprochement in the early 1970s\, one of the most important events in 20th-century world history. It not only turned Beijing and Washington from bitter enemies to “tacit allies” (in Kissinger’s words) but also transformed the orientation or even essence of the Global Cold War. Zhou was one of a small group of Chinese and American officials whose prior work had enabled President Jimmy Carter and his Chinese counterpart Deng Xiaoping to accomplish the historic normalization of the bilateral relations in 1979. Reviewing how Zhou handled all the seemingly unresolvable difficulties of his time and found solutions to them may help us occupy an insightful position to cope with the mortal challenges facing Chinese-American relations in the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Zhou Enlai and His Times
DESCRIPTION:A Talk with Dr. Chen Jian\n\n\n\nDr. Chen Jian is Distinguished Global Network Professor of History\, New York University and NYU-Shanghai. He also holds Hu Shih Professor of History Emeritus at Cornell University and Global Fellow\, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His most recent book is Zhou Enlai: A Life (Harvard University Press\, 2024). \n\n\n\nZhou Enlai was China’s premier for twenty-seven years. Although overshadowed by Chairman Mao\, his influence in his own time and since has been vast. Supported by extensive and critical multilingual and multiarchival research\, Chen Jian reconstructs how Zhou used his administrative/bureaucratic skill and wisdom of political centrism not only to mitigate thedamage caused by Mao’s utopian visions and continuous-revolution programs but also to create conditions for the coming of the “reform and opening-up” era after Mao’s passing that have made China a superpower into the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer
