SUMMARY:Book Talk With Eric Kim\, Author of 'Korean American\,' with Jean Kim and Kim Severson
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta History Center for an author talk on “Korean American\,” a cookbook paying homage to what it means to be Korean American\, with delectable recipes that explore how new culinary traditions can be forged to honor both your past and your present. \nNew York Times staff writer Eric Kim grew up in Atlanta\, the son of two Korean immigrants. Food has always been central to his story\, from Friday-night Korean barbecue with his family to hybridized Korean-ish meals for one — like Gochujang-Buttered Radish Toast and Caramelized-Kimchi Baked Potatoes — that he makes in his tiny New York City apartment. In his debut cookbook\, Eric shares these recipes alongside insightful\, touching stories and stunning images shot by photographer Jenny Huang.Playful\, poignant\, and vulnerable\, Korean American also includes essays on subjects ranging from the life-changing act of leaving home and returning as an adult\, to what Thanksgiving means to a first-generation family\, complete with a full holiday menu — all the while teaching readers about the Korean pantry\, the history of Korean cooking in America\, and the importance of white rice in Korean cuisine. Recipes like Gochugaru Shrimp and Grits and Smashed Potatoes with Roasted-Seaweed Sour Cream demonstrate Eric’s prowess at introducing Korean pantry essentials to comforting American classics\, while dishes such as Cheeseburger Kimbap and Crispy Lemon-Pepper Bulgogi do the opposite by tinging traditional Korean favorites with beloved American flavor profiles. Baked goods like Milk Bread with Maple Syrup and Gochujang Chocolate Lava Cakes close out the narrative on a sweet note. \nIn this book of recipes and thoughtful insights\, especially about his mother\, Jean\, Eric divulges not only what it means to be Korean American but how\, through food and cooking\, he found acceptance\, strength\, and the confidence to own his story. \nAbout the Author\nEric Kim is a New York Times staff food writer born and raised in Atlanta\, Georgia. He worked his way through the literary and culinary world to eventually become a digital manager at Food Network and a senior editor at Food52\, where he amassed a devoted readership for his “Table for One” column. He now hosts regular videos on NYT Cooking’s YouTube channel. A former contributing editor at Saveur\, Eric taught writing and literature at Columbia University\, and his work has been featured in The Washington Post\, Bon Appétit\, and Food & Wine. He lives with his rescue pup\, Quentin Compson\, in New York City. \nAbout the Moderator\nKim Severson is a national food correspondent for the New York Times. She was previously the New York Times Southern bureau chief and\, before that\, a staff writer for the Food section. Severson won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for her contributions to the team that investigated sexual harassment and abuse against women. She has also won four James Beard awards and the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for her work on childhood obesity. She was a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle and before that\, an editor and reporter at the Anchorage Daily News in Alaska. Before dedicating herself to food reporting\, she covered crime\, education\, social services and politics for daily newspapers on the West Coast. She has written four books\, “The Trans Fat Solution\,” “The New Alaska Cookbook\,” a memoir called “Spoon Fed: How Eight Cooks Saved My Life\,” and\, in 2012\, “Cook Fight!” a collaborative cookbook with fellow New York Times writer Julia Moskin.\nShe lives in Atlanta with her fiancé\, teenager and two dogs.\nPromotional language provided by publisher. \n

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified: Hannah Palmer's 'Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World's Busiest Airport'
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices in global affairs continues with an in-person interview with Hannah Palmer on her first book released\, Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World’s Busiest Airport. \nTickets for the in-person reception are $15 each and include light bites and wine\, beer\, and water available. \nThere will be a meet and greet at 5:00 p.m. in advance of the interview at 5:30 P.M. Can’t make it? The interview portion of this event will also be broadcast and viewable free of charge via Zoom. Please select your preferred option when registering. \nSponsored by Gene Kansas Commercial Real Estate: \n \nHosted by Constellations\, home to the Global Atlanta offices:  \n \nAbout the Book\nIn the months leading up to the birth of her first child\, Hannah Palmer discovers that all three of her childhood houses have been wiped out by the expansion of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Having uprooted herself from a promising career in publishing in her adopted Brooklyn\, Palmer embarks on a quest to determine the fate of her lost homes—and of a community that has been erased by unchecked Southern progress. \nPalmer’s journey takes her from the ruins of kudzu-covered\, airport-owned ghost towns to carefully preserved cemeteries wedged between the runways; into awkward confrontations with airport planners\, developers\, and even her own parents. Along the way\, Palmer becomes an amateur detective\, an urban historian\, and a mother. \nLyrically chronicling the overlooked devastation and beauty along the airport’s fringe communities in the tradition of John Jeremiah Sullivan and Leslie Jamison\, Palmer unearths the startling narratives about race\, power\, and place that continue to shape American cities. \nPart memoir\, part urban history\, Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World’s Busiest Airport is a riveting account of one young mother’s attempt at making a home where there’s little home left. \n  \nAbout the Author\nHannah Palmer works as an urban designer in Atlanta. She writes about the intersection of southern stories and urban landscapes for venues like Art Papers\, Atlanta Magazine\, Southern Cultures\, and Canopy Atlanta. A graduate of Agnes Scott College\, she earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Sewanee: The University of the South. She lives on the southside with her husband and sons. Flight Path is her first book. \n  \nAbout the Series\nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda.

SUMMARY:Efrén Olivares in conversation with Laura Rivera - My Boy Will Die of Sorrow
DESCRIPTION:The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and A Cappella Books welcome author and Deputy Legal Director of the Immigrant Justice Project at Southern Poverty Law Center Efrén C. Olivares to The Carter Center for a discussion on his new book\, “My Boy Will Die of Sorrow: A Memoir of Immigration From the Front Lines” on Wednesday July 27\, 2022\, at 7 PM. The author will appear in conversation with Laura Rivera\, director of SPLC’s Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI). \nThis deeply personal perspective from a human rights lawyer—whose work on the front lines of the fight against family separations in South Texas intertwines with his own story of immigrating to the United States at thirteen—reframes the United States’ history as a nation of immigrants but also a nation against immigrants. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the venue. Masks are optional. \n  \nAbout the Author\nEfrén C. Olivares is the Deputy Legal Director of the Immigrant Justice Project at Southern Poverty Law Center. He was the lead lawyer in a successful landmark petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on behalf of families separated under the Zero Tolerance policy. He previously directed the Racial and Economic Justice Program at the Texas Civil Rights Project. His writings on immigration policy have also been published by the New York Times\, USA Today\, and Newsweek\, and he has testified before Congress and at briefings on Capitol Hill about immigration and border policies. Part of his work representing separated families was featured in the CBS News documentary “The Faces of Family Separation\,” released in October 2019. He has also been interviewed as an expert attorney on immigrants’ rights issues on numerous TV and radio shows\, and was featured in John Legend’s “Can’t Just Preach” series. \nOlivares was the first member of his family to attend college. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School. \n  \nAbout the Conversation Partner\nFor the past decade\, Laura Rivera has worked in partnership with immigrant and BIPOC communities in the South to advance and defend their legal and human rights. She has contributed to the movement to end the detention of immigrants by litigating class action cases against government agencies and directing a program that provides direct representation to detained immigrants in removal proceedings\, the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center. She has also represented farmworkers in wage theft and trafficking cases as part of the Farmworker Division of the Georgia Legal Services Program.  Laura is committed to practicing community lawyering\, centering directly impacted people in her work\, and building coalitions. Previously\, Laura worked as a journalist in New York and Puerto Rico. Laura is a proud native of Puerto Rico and is fluent in Spanish. She lives in Decatur with her wife and dogs and enjoys spending time with her family\, hiking\, and cooking.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Former AGCO Chairman and CEO Martin Richenhagen Discusses 'The America Whisperer' at the Goethe-Zentrum
DESCRIPTION:Doing business in the world’s largest economy can be hard\, especially as an outsider. Martin Richenhagen\, the longtime chairman and CEO of Atlanta-based tractor manufacturer AGCO Corp.\, and former Chairman of the German American Chamber of Commerce Southeast (GACC)\, used his deep corporate experience and hard-won cross-cultural expertise to crack the code on working with Americans\, for a time serving as the only German-born chief executive of a Fortune 500 company and leading the global enterprise to new heights.  \nJoin Global Atlanta\, Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta\, and the German American Chamber of Commerce Southeast\, for an interactive discussion with Mr. Richenhagen on his German-language book\, Der Amerika-Flüsterer: Mein Weg vom deutschen Religionslehrer zum US-Topmanager (The America Whisperer: My Journey from Religion Teacher to U.S. Executive). In conversation with Managing Editor Trevor Williams\, Mr. Richenhagen will reflect on his personal experiences while offering thoughts on the current transatlantic business and trade climate.  \nWhile the meat of the discussion will be in English\, welcoming remarks will be offered in German\, along with readings in German from the text and a bilingual Q&A — Mr. Richenhagen will answer in the language in which the question is asked —  in keeping with the spirit of the book and the mission of the Goethe-Zentrum\, Atlanta’s German cultural center and language institute\, which will hold a grand opening on its new downtown offices just days before our event. \nIn addition to his German roots\, Mr. Richenhagen is a fluent French speaker who has been knighted by the French government for his contributions to the spread of French language and culture. That’s a fitting connection\, given that the Goethe shares space with the Alliance Française d’Atlanta.  \nA portion of the proceeds and donations collected via the form will go toward furthering German language education in Atlanta. \nThis event is part of Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series\, sponsored by the Atlanta Global Studies Center. \nLight bites/drinks will be provided.  \nAbout the Book\nIn The America Whisperer Dr. Richenhagen recalls his roots in postwar Cologne and the character traits that contributed to his long and successful career in the United States. As a prominent proponent of strong German-American ties\, Dr. Richenhagen shares his views on the transatlantic relationship and corporate responsibility as well as his outlook for the 2021 German federal election. \nAbout the Author\nMartin Richenhagen was the first and for many years the only German CEO of a US Fortune 500 company. Born and raised in Cologne\, he studied theology\, philosophy and worked as a French teacher before he changed fields and started a successful international business career.  \nFrom 2004 to December 31\, 2020\,  Mr. Richenhagen was the chairman\, president and CEO of the Atlanta-based agricultural equipment manufacturer AGCO Corporation\, which sells its products under the well-known brands Challenger®\, Fendt®\, Massey Ferguson®\, Valtra® and GSI®.  Mr. Richenhagen is the industry expert on all agribusiness matters and frequently speaks at conferences\, universities and business summits.  \nMr. Richenhagen currently serves on the Board of Directors of PPG Industries\, Linde PLC\, Daimler Truck Holding AG and Stihl AG. In 2008\, Mr. Richenhagen was appointed Honorary Professor to the faculty of agricultural machinery at the TU Dresden\, Dresden University of Technology (Germany) and in 2016\, he received an honorary Ph.D. from Szent István University in Gödöllő\, (Hungary).   \nAs of May 1\, 2020\, Mr. Richenhagen serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University (AICGS). He served as the Chairman of the German American Chambers of Commerce of the US (GACCs) and is a former member of the President’s ‘Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa’.  \nBorn in Cologne\, Germany\, in 1952\, Mr. Richenhagen holds a first and second State Examination in Philology from the University of Bonn\, Germany. \nHe started his career at Hille & Müller GmbH\, Germany where he held multiple positions from 1985 until 1995 leading up to General Manager for Supply Chain Management. He then served as Senior Executive Vice President of Schindler Deutschland Holdings GmbH\, Germany\, a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of elevators and escalators\, from 1995 until 1998. He also served as Group President for CLAAS KGaA mbH\, a global agricultural equipment manufacturer and distributor headquartered in Germany\, from 1998 until 2002. \nFrom 2003 until 2004\, Dr. Richenhagen was Vice President of Forbo International SA\, a flooring material company headquartered in Switzerland before joining AGCO\, where he served as Chief Executive Officer and President of AGCO Corporation\, a global manufacturer and distributor of tractors and agricultural equipment\, from 2004 to 2020 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2006 to 2020.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Adam Brookes\, Author of Fragile Cargo
DESCRIPTION:“Wars not only put individual lives at risk\, but entire cultures. From Ukraine to Iraq to Afghanistan\, we’ve grown used to seeing images of looted museums\, obliterated landmarks\, and broken artifacts. The theft of important works of art in Western Europe by the Nazis during World War II has been widely documented. Less well-known—and told here for the first time in English—is the astounding true story of the efforts in China to protect one of the greatest art collections in the world from almost certain destruction.” \nIn Fragile Cargo: The World War II Race to Save the Treasures of the Forbidden City\, journalist Adam Brookes gives readers the gripping true story of the bold and determined museum curators who saved the priceless treasures of China’s Forbidden City in the years leading up to World War II and beyond. \nAbout the Author\nAdam Brookes was born in Canada and grew up in the United Kingdom. For many years he was a journalist for BBC News\, working as a correspondent in Beijing\, as well as in Indonesia and the United States. He lives in Takoma Park\, Maryland.

SUMMARY:Black History Month 2023 - The Power of Storytelling (Virtual Book Discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Every February\, Black History Month recognizes the accomplishments\, contributions\, and legacy of African Americans in U.S. history and society\, from activists and civil rights pioneers to leaders in business\, politics\, academia\, culture\, and more. \nThe Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta regularly engages in the Black History Month celebrations to honor the importance of African Americans in shaping the American nation. This year\, we want to highlight the transformative power of storytelling and its potential to raise awareness and bring about change for a social cause. Throughout human history\, stories and narratives have been an essential way of connecting with an audience and appealing to hearts and minds. They enable us to understand a different experience of the world\, and thus enhance our empathy. In the struggle for social justice and equality\, storytelling was\, and still is\, of particular importance to the history of Black people. \nIn this context\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta organizes a virtual book discussion on the book “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel” on February 23\, 2023\, 1pm-2pm EST. \nIn collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta will virtually host Fork Burke (Editor) and Myriam Diarra (Editor) who\, in conversation with Dr. Stephane Dunn\, will discuss their latest publication “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel”. They will provide an insider look into their book which explores the historical and contemporary lived experiences of Black women from the town of Biel/Bienne [Switzerland]. In addition to shedding light on this extraordinary part of the global Black diaspora\, Fork Burke and Myriam Diarra will speak on the importance of storytelling and share ideas on the legacy writing process that preserves the histories of the Black diaspora for future generations.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Mona Tajali's 'Women’s Political Representation in Iran and Turkey: Demanding a Seat at the Table'
DESCRIPTION:Women’s history month comes at a fraught time in Iran and Turkey\, two pivotal nations straddling the Middle East and Asia.  \nIn Iran\, the death of a young woman in police custody has thrown the oppression of women into stark relief\, sparking widespread protests led by women over the forced wearing of headscarves that have pressured the hardline regime.  \nIn Turkey\, meanwhile\, women have been asked to carry much of the trauma from an earthquake that has killed nearly 50\,000 people in the southeastern part of the country. \nThese acute issues comes on top of the chronic lack of representation in both countries. Women in Turkey occupy just 17 percent of available parliamentary seats. In Iran\, it’s just 3 percent.  \nThe event. To explore and compare the factors limiting female participation in politics in both countries\, join Global Atlanta for the season kickoff of Authors Amplified\, a series of virtual book talks in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center spotlighting Georgia voices on international issues.  \nWe’ll be chatting with Agnes Scott College Professor Dr. Mona Tajali\, author of Women’s Political Representation in Iran and Turkey: Demanding a Seat at the Table\, in a podcast-style interview that will be broadcast live from Constellations in downtown Atlanta.  \nAbout the book (text from the publisher): \n\nHow have women in many Muslim-majority countries been able to achieve surprising success despite the significant constraints imposed by conservative gender ideology and authoritarian political parties and systems? Through a comparative focus on Iran and Turkey\, Mona Tajili examines the activities and strategies of women’s rights groups across the ideological spectrum. She explores how various groups have negotiated with political elites in order to bolster female political representation and identifies the conditions that stimulate greater support to ease women’s path to political office. Studying how women’s groups manoeuvre within these structures is important to help our understanding of the gendered politics of autocratic regimes. \n\nAbout the author: \nMona Tajali is associate professor of international relations and women’s\, gender\, and sexuality studies at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta\, Georgia. She has authored (with Homa Hoodfar) Electoral Politics: Making Quotas Work for Women (WLUML 2011)\, and several scholarly articles on gender and politics in the Middle East. Since 2007 she has been collaborating with the research wing of Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) transnational solidarity network and since 2019 serves as a member of its executive board. \nAbout the series and sponsor: \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author & Book Presentation: Reiner Lomb "Aspire"
DESCRIPTION:Meet the author Reiner Lomb\, transformational change leader and executive coach: \n\n\n\nIn his new book\, Reiner Lomb writes\, “Many of my own experiences have inspired the creation of ASPIRE. Yet one stands out above all others as an illustration of the power of emotions in leading change…It’s November 9\, 1989\, and I am on vacation in Cuba. It is already late and I’m trying to sleep\, but the sound of cheering outside my hotel room keeps me awake. I get up and open the door to ask the noisemakers to be quiet\, but before I’m able to speak\, a man shouts at me\, “Die Mauer ist gefallen!” (“The Wall came down!”) I shake my head\, thinking\, “How drunk must he be that he believes the Wall has come down?” I go back to bed\, not believing what I have heard.” \n\n\n\nHow a small group of committed leaders peacefully brought down the Berlin Wall by mobilizing millions of people is one of many of the stories Reiner Lomb shares in Aspire to show the power of emotions in creating positive change. \n\n\n\nIncluded is the story of Anke Jahn\, who grew up behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany. At the age of 18\, just three months before the Berlin Wall came down\, she and her best friend escaped. Join us for an exciting evening with Reiner Lomb and Anke Jahn and learn the seven essential emotions for leading positive change\, no matter where you are. \n\n\n\nThe program is in English. The discussion is lead by our executive director Oliver Gorf and occasionally highlight German vocabulary for additional\, deep insights. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:30PM – come mingle. The official program begins at 7:00PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

We will update you with more information at a later date. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the annual France-Atlanta series organized by Georgia Tech and the Embassy of France in the United States. \n\n\n\nOne of the great intellectuals of our time\, committed to the decolonization of knowledge from an African perspective\, Senegalese thinker Felwine Sarr is invited for the first time in Atlanta to present his work and his intellectual journey. Felwine Sarr will be in conversation with Lauren Tate Baeza\, Curator of African Art at the High Museum of Art and Axelle Karera\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Emory University. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Time magazine featured Felwine Sarr as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. His thinking is developing in different directions and on several fronts at once. With philosopher Achille Mbembe\, he is the initiator of the “Ateliers de la pensée”\, which has been bringing together writers\, thinkers\, artists and academics from Africa and the diaspora in Dakar since 2016. The same year\, he published Afrotopia [University of Minnesota Press\, 2020]\, an essay on the future of the continent and the need to pursue decolonization. Together with art historian Bénédicte Savoy\, he is also the author of the landmark “Rapport sur la restitution du patrimoine culturel africain” [The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage. Toward a New Relational Ethics\, 2018]\, logical compensation for colonial predation. Felwine Sarr now teaches at Duke University\, where he brings knowledge produced in Africa and promotes an ecology of knowledge from different geographies and traditions. More recently\, he has played a major role\, alongside numerous intellectuals\, activists and citizens\, in the defense of Senegalese democracy\, and advocates a deepening of democracy in Africa. Today\, he is working to create a “pluriversity” in Dakar\, a university based on the plurality of knowledge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
