Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at MIT\, focusing on designing high-energy and high-power density nanostructured electrodes for electrochemical energy storage\, and synthesizing catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion of small molecules such as methanol oxidation and O2 reduction. He conducted his postdoctoral research in designing electrodes for lithium rechargeable batteries and catalysts for solar energy storage in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Chemistry at MIT. \nDr. Lee’s research focuses on understanding electrochemical energy conversion and storage mechanisms as well as on designing electrochemical systems that can link renewable energy sources with various end-user applications. The development of these technologies is a critical factor in supporting new transportation technologies\, load-leveling for solar and stationary power applications\, and fast-evolving portable electronic devices. To respond to these challenges\, we will explore the following interconnected research areas. \n  \n——————————————————————- \nThe Future of the EV Industry\, Professor Woongchul Choi\, Kookmin University \n  \nProf. Woongchul Choi serves as a Professor of the Department of Automotive Engineering at Kookmin University in Korea. He started his professional career as founder of FloCoTec\, Inc. a high-tech venture company in Columbus\, Ohio specializing in the development of stereoscopic image-based flow field measurement systems. He and his company enjoyed considerable success over a span of 20+ years\, carrying out numerous research projects with Ford and other major automotive OEMs. \nIn 2010\, Prof. Choi returned to Korea\, whereupon his services became highly sought after not only by the government\, but also by world-class private sector companies. Prof. Choi works closely with Samsung Electronics\, Samsung Electro-Mechanics\, Hyundai Motors\, and SK Group. In keeping with the electrification of the mobility sector\, his activities have a strong EV emphasis. His recent projects include: the development of battery swappable electric bus as a public transportation system; battery pack thermal management systems; and strategy development of charging infrastructure. His research interests include characterization of battery cells\, diagnostics and performance evaluation of battery cells and modules\, development of super-fast charging algorithms causing little damage to battery cells\, and more on xEV Systems integration. \nDue to the practical nature of his engineering work\, Prof. Choi has strong working relations with nearly all major personalities\, companies\, industry associations\, government research centers and policy making bodies in Korea. He has many patents under his name. \nProf. Choi was born and raised in Korea. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University in 1987 and earned both his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Ohio State University in Columbus\, Ohio in 1989 and 1995\, respectively. Prof. Choi is a keen sportsman\, his preferred game being a basketball. \n  \n——————————————————————- \n  \nPANEL DISCUSSION & REMARKS – SPEAKERS: \n​Yoonjoo Park is H.E. Consul General\, representing Consulate of the Republic of Korea who arrived in Atlanta in June 2021 to begin his current post. The Republic of Korea Consulate in Atlanta opened in 1976 and covers the states Georgia\, Alabama\, Florida\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee and the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Previously\, Consul General Park held various positions such as Counsellor of the Korean Embassy in Iran\, Director of North America Division Ⅱ\, Deputy Consul-General of the Korean Consulate General in Boston\, Counsellor of the Korean Embassy in Australia\, Deputy Director-General for North American Affairs\, and Director-General for Human Resources. He earned a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Seoul National University in 1993 and a master’s degree in International Trade and Investment from George Washington University in 2002. He is married and has one son and one daughter. \n——————————————————————– \n  \nLynn Fischer Fox\, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary with the US Department of Commerce\, advises clients on international trade policy and litigation matters. Her practice focuses on trade remedies\, including antidumping\, countervailing duty\, and safeguard actions; counseling companies on trade agreements and trade negotiations; as well as providing advice to companies navigating trade and investment barriers imposed by foreign governments. She brings a wealth of government experience and skills to her practice\, including a deep understanding of how to help clients navigate new and existing trade policies and regulations. Prior to joining the firm\, Ms. Fischer Fox served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Negotiations in the International Trade Administration at the US Department of Commerce. During her time there\, she coordinated the formulation and implementation of policies governing trade agreement compliance and the administration of antidumping and countervailing duty laws. In addition\, she coordinated with attorneys and policy staff on World Trade Organization (WTO)disputes involving trade remedy matters\, as well as directing the Department’s efforts on trade remedy negotiations at the WTO and in bilateral agreements. During her tenure in government\, Ms. Fischer Fox led successful settlement negotiations for a number of high-profile trade remedy cases. She also directed a team that monitored foreign government compliance with bilateral and multilateral trade agreements\, and advocated on behalf of US industries facing foreign trade and investment barriers. Earlier in her career\, Ms. Fischer Fox spent more than a decade in private practice. She represented clients in diverse agency proceedings\, including antidumping and countervailing duty cases\, safeguard investigations\, and section 337 investigations. She litigated trade matters before US courts and advised clients on trade agreements\, foreign market access\, and trade agreement negotiations\, as well as US regulatory and compliance matters. She also worked as an Energy & Climate Policy Officer at the Commission for Environmental Cooperation and as a Trade and Environment Specialist with the Natural Resources Defense Council. \n​——————————————————————– \n  \nYong Sohn is currently is Chief Executive Coordinator in charge of Government Affair for the Hyundai Motor Company Washington Office and previous held positions as General Manager of the Global PR Team in charge of public relations for Hyundai Motor Company\, Kia Motors and key group initiatives\, Executive Coordinator at Hyundai Motor America in charge of public relations\, marketing and CSR\, Deputy General Manager of the Overseas Promotion Team in charge of global promotional events including auto shows in the U.S.\, Europe and China\, Manager at the Overseas Advertising Team in charge of executing production and media executions for global advertising campaigns\, Manager at the Sports Marketing Team in charge of global sponsorships including the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Korea. SUMMARY:Chatham County – Planning for New South Korean Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Join World Trade Center Savannah in partnership with the four counties of the Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority for a program and discussion in understanding how best to welcome our new South Korean neighbors to our local communities as the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America is built at the Bryan County Megasite. As this enormous investment evolves\, our communities will host many South Korean nationals and their families through the design\, construction and production phases of making this state-of-the-art plant the premier EV production facility in North America\, along with their suppliers locating throughout the region. While many tasks lie ahead\, making these families feel welcome and helping them adjust to life in the United States\, Georgia and in our communities is essential. \nGuest speaker Jeanne Charbonneau\, who served for 17 years as the primary point-of-contact for South Korean families in the Montgomery\, Alabama River Region\, will share her experiences\, insights\, successes and challenges with our community leaders. We will benefit enormously from their “lessons learned.” Topics will cover educational placement\, housing\, access to medical care\, including vaccinations\, and the need to develop programs to address second-language proficiency for both students and adults. \nThe Chatham County program will take place Thursday\, Jan. 19 at the Georgia Quick Start facility\, 1500 Pine Meadow Drive\, Pooler\, Georgia 31322. Interested parties can choose to attend the 9 – 11 a.m. program or the 3 – 5 p.m. program. This program is also taking place in Bryan\, Effingham and Bulloch Counties on Tuesday\, Jan. 17\, Wednesday\, Jan. 18\, and Friday\, Jan. 20\, respectively. This program is free of charge\, but registration is required.

This has been traced in the rise of several international brands founded by fashion entrepreneurs (i.e.\, ACBC Shoes\, Reformation\, Everlane\, Patagonia)\, in the increasing number of collaborations between incumbent firms\, new ventures and NGOs (i.e.\, ACBC shoes collaborating with luxury brands like Missoni and Chloe\, Gucci collaborating with Wordrise and Artolution\, Adidas collaborating with Parley for the Oceans)\, as well as in criticisms towards the current business models of established global brands (i.e.\, fast fashion companies like Zara).\n\nWith the purpose of providing insight both from the academic domain and practice\, this webinar will present a discussion to highlight following questions:\n\n-How does a strong orientation towards sustainability transform the playground of big multinationals in the fashion industry? He also has graduate studies in Political Science at New York University and a master’s and a doctorate in History from the University of Brasilia. \nAs a diplomat\, he served at the Brazilian Financial Office in New York (1990-1994)\, and at several Brazilian Embassies including Mexico City (1994-1996)\, Washington (2000-2003)\, Montevideo (2003-2006)\, and Quito (2006-2010). He also served at the Brazilian Mission to the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (2010-2014)\, in Lisbon. He was the Ambassador of Brazil to Nicaragua from 2017 to 2022. Currently\, he is the Consul General of Brazil in Atlanta (USA). He is the author of several books about Brazil’s foreign relations history. He has published several articles in journals in Brazil\, the United States\, Europe\, and Latin America\, including one in the collection “História General de América Latina”\, published by UNESCO. DESCRIPTION:Join Wesleyan College for the inaugural Gail Thompson Webster-Patterson Endowed Business Speaker Series Featuring Louise Blais on Thursday\, Feb. 16 at Wesleyan College Pierce Chapel. \nAbout the Speaker:  \nLouise Blais served as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations from 2017 to 2021 and was responsible for the 2030 Agenda and the campaign for the Security Council. She also served on the UNICEF Executive Board with a $7 billion budget where she was elected Vice‑Chair in 2019. She was appointed co-facilitator by the President of the UN General Assembly for the resolution of the 31st Special Session on COVID‑19. \nShe began her career as an Art Theft Analyst at Interpol. She then served as Program Manager for the National Archives Development Program from 1992 to 1996 before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1992. Among her personal commitments\, Blais is dedicated to the advancement of women in business and diplomacy. She launched the first North American summit (Canada\, United States\, Mexico) of women entrepreneurs. She is currently writing a book on women in leadership. \nAbroad\, she was first posted to the Washington Embassy\, then to Tokyo and Paris. During her 5-year mandate in France\, she and the team at the Embassy were responsible for preparing the Canadian participation at the G8 Summit in Deauville and the G20 in Cannes. \nIn Ottawa\, she held the positions of Director of Public Diplomacy and Executive Director of Human Resources Management with over 2\,000 rotational employees around the world. \nIn 2014\, she was appointed Consul General in Atlanta covering North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Tennessee\, Georgia\, Alabama and Mississippi – a region representing over $50 billion in commercial trade with Canada. She temporarily returned to that position in 2021 to help Canada face the protectionist surge in the United States. \nBlais has served on several boards including the Helen Hayes Awards in Washington\, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington\, and the Tokyo International Film Festival as well as the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Ballet. She is an alumna of the Trans-Atlantic and World Young Leaders Forum (2001\, 2002 and 2005) of the BWM Herbert Quandt Foundation\, where she remains a member of the Responsible Leaders Network\, a global network of leaders. \nShe holds the Robson Lecturer Emeritus designation at Emory University. She is also a guest lecturer at the École d’hiver en Relation internationale at Université Laval. \nShe is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Business Council of Alabama. \nBlais received a B.A. from McGill University. She is married and has two adult sons.

DESCRIPTION:Join Tim Smith (Senior Policy Advisor at Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility) as he moderates a timely roundtable discussion with leading experts to discuss opportunities to promote racial justice through social impact investments. Dr. Grant Warner (Bank of America Endowed Professor of Entrepreneurship and Director at Center for Black Entrepreneurship) will join the conversation and discuss opportunities to bolster the next generation of Black entrepreneurs. Also joining the conversation are Pearl Wicks (Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer at Hope Credit Union)\, Justin Conway (Vice President\, Investment Partnerships at Calvert Impact) and Ann McMikel (Executive Director\, Shared Interest) to discuss the landscape of social impact investments and community development finance institutions that are driving economic development in Black communities in the US and Southern Africa. \n  \nDuring this event the panel will discuss the opportunities for social impact investments in black communities the US and Southern Africa. As part of this discussion\, a new Nasdaq Foundation grant that Shared Interest recently received to empower HBCU students with information on social impact/ESG investing in disenfranchised communities will be shared. Students at Spelman\, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta will be the cornerstone of this exciting pilot project.
