SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - The impact of cultural differences in international business
DESCRIPTION:Join the Netherlands American Chamber of Commerce for an interesting Lunch & Learn where Peter van der Lende will walk us through the dimensions of cultural differences to help you bridge the cultural gap.\n\nWorking with people of different nationalities is very common nowadays. In addition to overseas offices\, companies are expected to embrace employees to work remotely in an international environment. No matter the size of companies\, their providers\nas well as their clients tend to come from beyond their\ngeographical borders. Cultural differences are an\nundeniable part of international business.\n\nEach country\, each nationality\, has a culture of its own. However\, these differences are not always recognized as a driver of lacking results or friction within teams.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nPeter van der Lende is Dutch and lived and worked in nine countries in Europe\, Latin America\, and North America. He currently resides in Atlanta. Peter started in the airline industry and worked as an independent since 2013 and with Culture Matters since 2019. In 2017 Peter started Expand360 with a partner. Expand360 aims at assisting companies expanding internationally by providing business development services. Peter has a master’s degree in Business Economics and is fluent in English\, Spanish\, and Dutch.

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series -- Interview With Ravi Saligram\, CEO of Newell Brands: Learning and Leading Through a Global Turnaround
DESCRIPTION:When Ravi Saligram joined Newell Brands in 2019 as President & CEO\, the company was experiencing poor performance\, low employee engagement and excessive complexity. In 2020\, Ravi and the world-class leadership team he’d built were also faced with leading through the unexpected and monumental issues presented by COVID. \nDespite these challenges\, employee engagement scores increased significantly\, and the company’s turnaround efforts persisted.\nWhile Ravi announced his May retirement earlier this year\, there’s no doubt the company has strengthened during his tenure. Complexity and overhead costs have been reduced; Project Ovid\, a multi-year initiative consolidating 23 unique supply chains into one\, was successfully implemented; a new innovation operating model was introduced\, and innovations were launched that leveraged COVID trends; automation has been scaled and the company has best-in-class productivity and safety records. Notably\, Newell Brands was named one of Fortune’s Most Admired Companies in 2022 and 2023\, a recognition it had not previously received. \nRavi is a three-time public CEO\, also having led OfficeMax\, Inc. and Ritchie Brothers. Despite arriving in the United States with less than $20 in his pocket\, he earned an MBA from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, and has lived in six countries and worked in many more during his nearly 40-year career\, which began at Leo Burnett in Chicago. \nDuring this webinar\, Ravi will speak with Global Atlanta Managing Editor Trevor Williams and share the following key takeaways:\n• The importance of a people-first approach and how to drive a culture of engagement\n• How companies can foster diversity\, inclusion and belonging and be a force for good\n• The necessity of cross-cultural competency and how international experience shapes perspective

SUMMARY:Author Talk: John McIntyre's 'Multinational Enterprises and the Challenge of Sustainable Development'
DESCRIPTION:Join Global Atlanta for the next interview in “Authors Amplified”\, a series of virtual book talks in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center spotlighting Georgia voices on international issues.  \nWe’ll be chatting with Professor & Executive Director of Georgia Tech CIBER\, John R. McIntyre\, on his book\, Multinational Enterprises and the Challenge of Sustainable Development\, in a podcast-style interview that will be broadcast live. \nAbout the book (text from the publisher):\n\nTransnational corporations play a role in the design\, diffusion\, and consolidation of sustainable development in the context of globalization and multinational firms. In this timely book European and American contributors analyze this role and explore the complex and dynamic phenomena of economic\, political\, cultural and legal interactions involved. \nIn order to understand this interplay\, the authors examine the practices and organizational behaviors used by multinationals in sustainable development. They also discuss the evolving concepts that multinationals hold about sustainable development and corporate social responsibility and how companies reaffirm these philosophies through their strategy and organizational practices such as human resource development\, marketing\, supply chain\, information technology\, law\, and communications. The authors outline an approach to help identify the key details and motivating factors in decision making. \nScholars\, students and policy analysts in the fields of business\, ecology\, economic development and developmental economics and consultants focusing in corporate planning and strategic analysis will find this original collection of great value. \nAbout the author: \nDr.  John R. McIntyre is founding Director of the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER)\, professor of management (strategy area) with a courtesy appointment in international relations in the Georgia Tech’s Sam Nunn School of International Affairs. SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: The Power of Storytelling in International Business Education and Policymaking
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling can be defined as the “intra-play of dominant narratives with ontological webs of lower level living stories that provide sense making currency for stakeholders” (Haley & Boje\, 2014\, p. 1116). Storytelling can be leveraged beyond marketing and communication. For example\, storytelling is extremely powerful as a strategic management tool. Storytelling is also very effective in supporting organizational change management\, facilitating internationalization and addressing sustainability. Storytelling\, as a strategic tool\, can facilitate various types of change processes\, attract and help manage various kinds of external resources\, and play an active role in driving collective agency and identification for social and political issues. This session is a discussion with two expert storytellers. \nKey takeaways: \n1. Is storytelling a dying art in international business education in a post-truth world of virtual reality\, artificial intelligence\, and misinformation? \n2. In a world of “infotainment” and the 15-second attention span\, do all educators need to be master storytellers? You may also be a fictional writer\, but not all of us are. What advice and tips would we give to IB educators who want to leverage storytelling in their teaching and even research? \n3. New Zealand punches well about its weight in the world\, from Jacinda Ardern to Taika Waititi\, to Sir Peter Jackson and Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith. What role does storytelling play in that success? Do all countries have storytelling agencies? What prompted New Zealand to lean so heavily into storytelling
