SUMMARY:Ambassador Briefing: Pakistan -- Reaching for Reform
DESCRIPTION:Join Global Atlanta and Miller & Martin for a timely discussion with Rizwan Saeed Sheikh\, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States since August 2024\, on investment opportunities as the country of 235 million people reaches for reform. \n\n\n\nDuring his first official visit to Atlanta to meet community leaders and students\, Mr. Saeed will outline the government’s efforts to boost financial inclusion and drive growth through its Uraan Pakistan plan\, which aims to seed 6 percent growth by 2028\, led by export-oriented sectors and in collaboration with the World Bank and other multilateral institutions\, as outlined by the finance minister at the recent World Economic Forum. \n\n\n\nEven amid stalled talks between the government and opposition\, Mr. Saeed will showcase how sectors like energy\, infrastructure\, technology\, mining\, and agriculture offer substantial growth potential\, and how foreign investors from some of the world’s most dynamic economies are seizing opportunities in this key South Asian market. \n\n\n\nViewing Atlanta as a hub for higher education\, he will also explore deeper university collaborations and opportunities for the mutual recognition of degrees and credentials to drive further exchange. A fintech hub\, Atlanta could also play a role in the country’s nascent digitization efforts\, bringing individuals and small businesses into the formal economy and reducing the unbanked population. \n\n\n\nHeld over lunch\, the conversation will also address how Pakistan will work with the new U.S. administration\, manage regional tensions and where it sits in a world increasingly marked by U.S.-China rivalry. \n\n\n\nSee a summary of our last Pakistan briefing: Georgia Now on Pakistan’s Map\, Ambassador Says \n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmbassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored & Hosted by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:Fifth Nunn School Symposium: The Dollar's Challenged Role in the World
DESCRIPTION:Since the end of the Second World War the US dollar has played a central role in the global economy. This half-day symposium will explore how the US has used the dollar and the US financial system as a source of power and assess the challenges to the continued centrality of the dollar and the US financial system and consider what that means for US power. \n\n\n\n12:00 Lunch and welcome\n\n\n\n\nAlasdair Young\, Professor and Neal Family Chair\, Sam Nunn School ofInternational Affairs\, Georgia Institute of Technology\n\n\n\n\n12:30 Leveraging the dollar for foreign policy ends\n\n\n\n\nBrian Grant\, Managing Director\, Global Head of Financial Crimes ComplianceOperations and Global Head of Sanctions Compliance at MUFG\n\n\n\nPeter Harrell\, Nonresident Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for InternationalPeace. DESCRIPTION:South Africa and Atlanta: Partnership Beyond PoliticsExploring a Grassroots Future for the Atlanta Phambili Initiative \n\n\n\nLast year’s Atlanta Phambili (“forward”) initiative\, driven by the outgoing U.S. ambassador\, promised a newly productive chapter in South Africa’s relationship with Atlanta\, one already grounded in longstanding commercial collaboration\, civil-rights linkages and university partnerships.  \n\n\n\nBut with a new administration in Washington\, the bilateral winds have shifted considerably\, and keeping forward momentum will require a bottom-up approach driven by sub-national players like the City of Atlanta\, as well as investment and trade interests on both sides of the Atlantic.  \n\n\n\nJoin Global Atlanta and Ethiopian Airlines at Miller & Martin PLLC to hear from city leaders\, South Africa trade experts and local investors who joined Mayor Andre Dickens’ December delegation to Johannesburg and Cape Town\, which was aimed at solidifying grassroots partnerships that will last beyond the politics of the moment.  \n\n\n\nDuring the event\, Global Atlanta will also release a special report based on Managing Editor Trevor Williams’ Dispatch from South Africa last June\, underwritten by Ethiopian Airlines.  \n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaulina GuzmanDirector\,Mayor’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMourad DakhliAssociate Dean for International Student Engagement and Partnerships\, Georgia State University Robinson College of Business\nDr. Mourad Dakhli is a professor and practitioner of International Business whose research explores how human and social capital processes generate value across diverse cultural and institutional settings\, focusing on their implications for innovation and entrepreneurship—his active research agenda bridges practice-focused inquiry with the scholarship of teaching and learning. \n\n\n\nWith professional experience spanning four continents and engagement in over two dozen countries\, Dr. Dakhli has led capacity development initiatives\, directed operations for a binational chamber of commerce\, and designed\, implemented\, and assessed high-impact practices in international higher education. \n\n\n\nHe holds certifications in Business Analytics\, Six Sigma Black Belt\, and is recognized as a Master Teacher. SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: An Entrepreneurial Vision for Export Success
DESCRIPTION:An asylee from Colombia\, Felipe Arroyave came to the U.S. as a teenager with a strong work ethic and a desire to better himself through education. Along the way\, he caught a vision for helping those in the developing world\, from Latin America to the Middle East and beyond\, who lacked access to the specialty contact lenses patients in the West take for granted. Remedying the problem —and fixing vision for sufferers of kerotoconus\, corneal abrasions and other rare ocular problems — required some gumption and finesse. He’d spied the problem while working for a $4 billion lens distributor who was blind to the potential in smaller economies. Arroyave first proved the concept\, boosting sales for his employer in Latin American markets before branching out on his own and converting his former boss into one of his largest customers. Fast forward to today\, and Spectrum was named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Small Business Exporter of the Year in 2024 on top of previous honors\, including winning both the Georgia GLOBE Award and the Atlanta Metro Export Challenge. HIs journey from the factory floor to the C-suite\, and his recent expansion of logistics and support infrastructure in Latin America to support growing sales\, offers an inspiring story of overcoming the odds by seeing and seizing opportunities in international business. \n\n\n\nKey Takeaways: \n\n\n\n1. How to see opportunities at the so-called “bottom of the pyramid” that legacy players believe are too costly or not lucrative enough to serve. \n\n\n\n2. The mechanics of exporting — how understanding payment\, shipping\, logistics and exchange rates can become a competitive advantage in the United States. \n\n\n\n3. How give-back programs including free education to doctors and patients\, along with an initiative provide contact lenses to underprivileged patients\, has helped build goodwill and boost the bottom line. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore info

SUMMARY:CIBER GROW Connect - Fireside Chat & Networking
DESCRIPTION:The GROW Connect at Georgia State University is an annual gathering of leading business professionals and academic experts\, fostering a thought-provoking dialogue on the evolving landscape of sustainability\, ethics\, and ESG (Environmental\, Social\, and Governance) in international business. \n\n\n\nThis year\, the symposium will explore the intersection of geopolitics\, corporate sustainability\, and accountability\, examining how businesses navigate ethical challenges\, regulatory shifts\, and global market disruptions. A key objective is to explore how these dynamics influence corporate decision-making and sustainability efforts\, while strengthening collaboration between industry and academia. \n\n\n\nGUEST SPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nANU PIDURU \n\n\n\nAnu Piduru is the Senior Director of Sustainability at Carter’s\, the largest branded marketer in North America of baby and children’s apparel. She leads Carter’s environmental sustainability strategy and also heads the company’s ESG reporting efforts. Over the course of Anu’s nearly 20-year career\, she has amassed sustainability and environmental compliance experience in the aviation and retail industries\, including waste reduction and management and decarbonization. Prior to her role at Carter’s\, she worked in sustainability and environmental compliance for Delta Air Lines for nearly 15 years. She has served her local community as a board member for organizations focused on water resource preservation and landfill diversion. She is currently on the board for Atlanta’s LiveThrive organization\, which owns and operates the Centers for Hard to Recycle Materials\, and she serves on the Executive Committee for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night walk in Atlanta. Anu earned her BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and has been dedicated to the environment from a young age. \n\n\n\nJORDAN SIEGEL \n\n\n\nJordan Siegel is a Professor of Strategy at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Professor Siegel is also a Research Fellow at the William Davidson Institute and an Associate-in-Research at the Harvard Korea Institute of the Harvard Asia Center. \n\n\n\nProfessor Siegel specializes in the study of how companies gain competitive advantage through their global strategy. Professor Siegel finds that there are numerous opportunities for companies to attain superior sustainable corporate performance through creative strategies for corporate governance and human resource management. \n\n\n\nA set of studies written by Professor Siegel explores how companies borrow\, leverage\, and arbitrage institutions across borders as a means of attaining long-term competitive advantage. By institutions Professor Siegel refers to the formal and informal rules of the game that affect companies’ competitive behavior and resource access. Formal institutions include corporate\, securities\, and bankruptcy law; informal institutions include a society’s cultural stance toward meritocracy and egalitarianism. (While a thorough list of rules of the game might be near-infinite\, Professor Siegel concentrates on those that directly affect governance of companies.) The main idea is that companies—even single-country-focused companies—exhibit a surprising ability to attain competitive advantage via their choices of other countries’ institutions. \n\n\n\nAnother set of studies written by Professor Siegel and his coauthors shows that companies can make their approach to the labor market a core component of their competitive advantage. The goal has been to examine whether the hiring and promotion of female managers leads to improved corporate performance\, whether foreign multinationals disproportionately engage in the hiring and promotion of female managers\, and whether foreign multinationals act differently in the hiring and promotion of senior female managers in Japan and South Korea compared to what they do at home. Overall\, the results show that foreign multinationals have been the most active in both Japan and South Korea in exploiting the social bias and hiring and promoting women to senior management positions. Professor Siegel and his coauthors argue based on panel analysis with company fixed effects\, and based on systematically ruling out alternative explanations\, that the aggressive application of this outsider’s advantage has led to demonstrable improvements in performance over time for foreign multinationals in Japan and South Korea. Moreover\, this source of competitive advantage is not short-lived\, but appears to be as much as a decade-long opportunity. \n\n\n\nProfessor Siegel’s work has been published in Management Science\, Administrative Science Quarterly\, the Strategic Management Journal\, Organization Science\, the Journal of Financial Economics\, the Review of Financial Studies\, the Journal of Comparative Economics\, and the Journal of Economic Literature. \n\n\n\nSEBASTIAN VAN DER VEGT \n\n\n\nSebastian Van Der Vegt is a global strategist and founding partner at WMBV Consulting\, with over two decades of experience helping organizations expand across international markets. A former Coca-Cola executive and United Nations professional\, he has led award-winning initiatives in sustainability\, corporate communications\, and brand strategy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: Murata: Tiny Parts\, Huge Impact on Global Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:When things are going right\, the small things are easy to ignore. Not so when supply chains are stressed — the essential becomes magnified\, no matter how tiny. \n\n\n\nThat’s what happened with Murata\, who in 1973 became one of the earliest Japanese investors in Georgia\, setting up a plant to make capacitors in car radios. The Kyoto-based company\, now with global annual revenues of approximately $1.7 Trillion yen\, holds about 40 percent of the world’s market share for capacitors\, small ceramic parts produced by the trillions each year to store and release power within electronic devices. \n\n\n\nWhen a tsunami hit Japan’s northeast coast in 2011 and an earthquake shook the country\, electronics supply chains were scrambled. Everything\, from cell phones and digital cameras to appliances and EVs\, relies in some way on Murata’s parts — more than 1\,000 go into a typical smartphone and potentially 30\,000+ slated for a fully autonomous electric vehicle. \n\n\n\nMurata had already been diversifying its sourcing around the world\, including in Southeast Asia\, to be closer to end customers. It also deepened research spending to ensure it could serve advanced industries\, like increasingly computerized cars\, with innovative solutions. That blend of diversification and R&D continues today. Murata Electronics North America\, meanwhile\, has a new headquarters in Atlanta\, Ga.\, and maintains a distribution center in Rockmart\, Ga. \n\n\n\nToday\, an uncertain global trade landscape threatens to inflict another shock to supply chains around the world. Join GSU-CIBER and Global Atlanta to hear from Murata Electronics North America’s CEO\, David Kirk\, on how the company is dealing with increasing volatility in high-value industries where the smallest parts can make the biggest impact. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Kirk\, VP\, Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd.President & CEO\, Murata Electronics North America\nDavid is responsible for various functions within the Americas including Sales/Marketing\, Operations and Corporate Technology\, and Innovation. The Americas is a critical region for design-in activity that results in Global Sales within the Electronics industry. Murata has made multiple acquisitions and integrations on a global basis including Peregrine Semiconductor (pSemi)\, Vios Medical\, Eta Wireless\, Resonant\, and RF Monolithics (RFM). \n\n\n\nHe started his career as a Product Engineer with Murata and moved into the Director of Marketing role. He then became President and CEO of RFM\, which was a public company from 1999 to 2011. Upon coming back to Murata in 2012\, he was instrumental in RFM’s acquisition by the parent company in Japan. \n\n\n\nDavid is the first non-Japanese person to lead Murata in the Americas and become an officer of the parent company Murata Manufacturing Company headquartered in Kyoto\, Japan.  \n\n\n\nHe came to the United States in the late 1970s on a track scholarship and graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in Electrical Engineering. \n\n\n\nDavid and his wife\, Tammi\, have four grown children and live in McKinney\, TX (in the Dallas area). His hobbies include golfing\, hiking\, cycling (gravel)\, fishing\, and their seven grandchildren. \n\n\n\nDavid enjoys the challenge of globalizing Murata and specifically mentoring the next generation of leaders in following the company’s philosophy of contributing to the advancement of society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey takeaways:  \n\n\n\n\nHow Murata has diversified its manufacturing locations around the world in partnership with customers and what that has meant for the company’s U.S. operations\n\n\n\n\n\nMurata’s approach to continuous improvement in research and development\, its moves up the value chain over the last 50 years\, and efforts to showcase innovation in relatable ways like robots and other consumer-facing items\n\n\n\n\n\nThe company’s approach to trade uncertainty and supply chain volatility and how the company balances its Japanese sensibilities\, including long-term strategy\, with a nimble approach in global markets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
