DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed pianist and music composer Malek Jandali joins local filmmaker Ameer Muhammad in a musical event to explain the mission of Pianos for Peace and how it works to build peace through music\, art\, and education. Jandali’s hit album “Echoes from Ugarit” was recorded in Moscow with The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and released in 2008. It includes original compositions based on the oldest music notation in the world discovered on a clay tablet in the ancient Mediterranean city of Ugarit. \nPoetic Voices of the Muslim World is presented by Poets House and City Lore\, in partnership with the American Library Association and the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Funded by the Bridging Cultures Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. With additional support from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. In light of 2015’s spotlight on immigration\, refugees and a “migrant crisis”\, they wanted to continue that discussion and clarify the history\, terminology\, resettlement and legal processes\, and current events surrounding immigration and\, in particular\, refugees. Come learn more about refugees and the refugee community in the Atlanta area! \nThey will have some local immigrant integration community members there to help get their conversation going\, including Immigration lawyer\, Giselle Reid\, current and former IRC in Atlanta staff\, Aisha Johnson and Claire Jennings\, and various refugee community members. Additionally\, Maria Azuri\, Director of Program at Welcoming Atlanta (an initiative of the Office of Immigrant Affairs of the City of Atlanta)\, will be joining as well sharing about the work of Welcoming Atlanta to welcome immigrants\, including refugees\, into the metro area community. \nAbout InterCultural Atlanta: their primary purpose is to facilitate the interaction among intercultural enthusiasts and specialists to build intercultural awareness and competency across Atlanta.
