SUMMARY:Authors Amplified: Dorian Brown Crosby's Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices continues with an in-person interview with Dr. Dorian Brown Crosby\, Associate Professor of Political Science at Spelman College\, on her recently released book\, Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race. \nWe are excited to announce that this event has provided us with the unique opportunity to partner with Refuge Coffee Co.\, at their first physical location\, in Sweet Auburn for an evening event that celebrates refugee communities in Atlanta. As a non-profit organization\, their objective is to provide job creation and job training for resettled refugees. \nRefuge Coffee Co. began as a coffee truck that was founded and opened in Clarkston\, a city where Dr. Crosby has dedicated much of her time working with\, and a community that is a central focus in her book. \nTickets for in-person attendance are $15 each and include a free beverage of your choice\, so please feel free to order upon arrival and put it on the Global Atlanta tab. \nThere will be a meet and greet at 5:00 p.m. in advance of the interview at 5:30 p.m. that will be broadcast live to Zoom\, just in case you can’t join us in person. \nFor public health and safety reasons\, everyone attending in person must wear masks during the event when not eating.  \nCan’t make it? The interview portion of this event will also be broadcast and viewable free of charge via Zoom at 5:30 pm. Please select your preferred option when registering. \n \nHosted and Sponsored by Refuge Coffee Co. – Sweet Auburn location:  \n \nAbout the Book\n \nAs demographics change and the southern American region grows more multicultural\, clashes between mentalities and contemporary population realities increase. Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race offers a balanced and insightful look at Somalis in the southern United States. Politically centered\, it is a thought-provoking book that presents an essential and positive alternative to the familiar portrayal of Somalis in the United States as terrorists. It explains the U.S. resettlement process and illuminates the civic engagement and entrepreneurship of Somalis in Clarkston\, Georgia\, and Nashville\, Tennessee. \n  \nAbout the Author\nDr. Dorian Brown Crosby is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Spelman College in Atlanta\, Georgia. She is a faculty-mentor and Board Member of the Social Justice Program and the inaugural and former Director of Cultural Orientation in the Gordon-Zeto Center for Global Education at Spelman College. Dr. Brown Crosby graduated Cum Laude from Spelman with a B.A. in Political Science and earned her M.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Delaware in Newark\, Delaware. \nShe earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta\, Georgia. Her research focuses on resettled African refugees in the United States’ southeastern region\, placing her work in multiple contexts such as Forced Migration Studies\, American Government\, Women’s Studies\, Ethnic and Racial Politics\, and International Relations. \nHer first book\, Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race (2020\, Peter Lang)\, draws upon her research with resettled Somali communities in Clarkston\, Georgia\, and Nashville\, Tennessee. Her current research focuses on the voting patterns and motivations of former African refugees in the Southeastern region of the United States. \nAbout the Series\nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda.

SUMMARY:Climate Crisis & Contemporary Culture: Anthropocene Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Theatre straight from Paris by way of Berlin! \nJoin the Alliance Française and the Goethe-Zentrum in a powerful\, three-part event featuring live theatrical performances by Parisian theatre director and performer Duncan Evennou. \n“Matters” and “Moving Earths” address the question of the Anthropocene – a term used to refer to the geological era in which we live\, where questions of climate\, ecology and geology have come to be defined by the presence and activities of human beings.\n\nDuncan Evennou is a contemporary performer and director specializing in experimental\, multi-media theatre. His performance “Matters” is based on work at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.\n\nJoin the Goethe-Zentrum and Alliance Française at the Georgia Tech campus for this exciting final event of their year-long series on Climate Crisis and Contemporary Cultures\, in cooperation with the German Consulate General and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.\n\nFull event line-up information here and below.\n\n\nThursday\, Dec. 2\, 2021\, 11 am – 12:30 pm\, Debate\, Discussion and Round Table with Duncan Evennou\, Frédérique Aït Touati\, Clemence Hallé\, Auditorium 152 Kendeda Building.\nThe event will be held both in person in the Kendeda Building Auditorium 152 and virtually on BlueJeans. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Andrea Jonsson\, Assistant Professor of French at the School of Modern Languages at the Georgia Institute of Technology. It is free for all to attend. \nWorking with the French philosopher and sociologist Bruno Latour\, the theater companies Zone critique (Frédérique Aït-Touati) and Lighthouse Compagny (Duncan Evennou) explore in a unique way the most urgent ecological and climatic issues. Between philosophy and theatre\, stage and science\, Zone critique and Lighthouse company productions claim the mix of genres: “we think it is well suited to the current period\, in which changes in ideas about the world are accompanied by a change in representations of this world. It is this aesthetics of science on the stage that we have been pursuing together for more than ten years” (Frédéric Aït-Touati & Bruno Latour). \nThursday\, Dec. 2\, 7:00 pm “Matters” Performance\, DramaTech Theatre (Duncan Evennou and Clémence Hallé)\nTickets: https://artsgatech.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=2052\nTrailer: https://vimeo.com/274043345 \nMatters is a solo that\, in a polyphonic assemblage\, gives shape and body to the archives of the Anthropocene Working Group’s inaugural meeting\, scheduled Friday\, October 17\, 2014 at 9:00 am on the stage of the House of World Cultures\, a contemporary performance institution located in Berlin. The geological hypothesis\, increasingly noisy in the art world\, inscribes the consequences of human impacts on their environments into the depths of earth time. Click here to view the trailer. \nWith Matters\, actor Duncan Evennou situates and then transforms the historical\, scientific and political voices of the members of the group\, playing with their words in all their sensitivity\, and moving from their narratives to their hesitations\, their silences or their derision\, plays with the frictions of thought when the sciences climb on the theater stage. Between the interstices of an increasingly disturbed performance appear the cracks of a dominant political discourse on the end of the world\, powerless in the face of the representations of long and inhuman time that the geologists invite to imagine. Yet it is only the end of a world. Can we hear others emerging from the hubbub of knowledge blurred by the urgency to act? \nFriday\, Dec. 3\, 7:00 pm “Moving Earths” Performance\, DramaTech Theatre (Duncan Evennou)\nTickets: https://artsgatech.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=2053 \nWhere to land? \nWhereas in 1610 we had to absorb the shock that “the earth moves”\, following Galileo’s discovery\, in 2021 we have to accept the much more surprising shock that the earth trembles and reacts to human actions to the point of disrupting all our development projects. \nWe invite the audience to test the hypothesis of a parallel between the era of the astronomical revolution and ours. Are we experiencing a world transformation as profound and radical as that of Galileo’s time? One thing is certain: we no longer know exactly what planet we live on\, nor how to describe it. It is not a single\, fixed and stable Earth\, but a multitude of planets that lie before us\, and which we must explore to find out which one to land on. \nBetween philosophy and theatre\, this production is a mix of genres: we think it is well suited to the current period\, in which changes in ideas about the world are accompanied by changes in representations of that world. It is this aesthetics of science on the stage that we have been pursuing together for more than ten years. \nClick here for more information on the events and speakers. \nThis event is part of the Franco-German series “Climate Crisis & Contemporary Culture” which seeks to explore the diverse means by which we communicate on our current climate crisis while exchanging experiences and art. It is designed by the Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta\, the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta\, the Villa Albertine in Atlanta\, and the School of Modern Languages of Georgia Tech\, with the support of the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the US\, the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany in Atlanta\, the Franco-German Cultural Fund\, and DramaTech

SUMMARY:Is the European Union Disunited By Diversity?
DESCRIPTION:The European Union appears at a crossroads\, struggling with its identity. Outwardly\, a monolithic giant to be dealt with. Inwardly\, at war with itself. Where is it going? \nSpeaker: Dr. Alasdair Young\, Professor & Neal Family Chair\, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\, Georgia Tech University \nSpeaker\n \nDr. Alasdair Young\, Professor & Neal Family Chair\, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\, Georgia Tech University \nAlasdair Young is Professor and Neal Family Chair. He co-directs the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies\, a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence\, and the Center for International Strategy\, Technology\, and Policy. He held a Jean Monnet Chair (2012-15) and received the Ivan Allen College’s Distinguished Researcher Award in 2015. Beyond Georgia Tech\, he is co-editor of JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies and was chair of the European Union Studies Association (USA) (2015-17). Before joining Georgia Tech in 2011 he taught at the University of Glasgow in the UK for 10 years. Prior to that\, he held research posts at the European University Institute in Florence\, Italy\, and the University of Sussex\, outside Brighton in the UK. \nAlasdair has written five books\, including Supplying Compliance with Trade Rules: Explaining the EU’s Responses to Adverse WTO Rulings (Oxford University Press\, 2021). He has edited 15 other volumes\, including the eighth edition of Policy-Making in the European Union with Mark Pollack\, Christilla Roederer-Rynning\, and Helen Wallace (Oxford University Press\, 2020). He has published almost a score of refereed journal articles — including in Global Environmental Politics\, the Journal of Common Market Studies\, the Journal of European Public Policy\, the Review of International Political Economy\, and World Politics — and written more than 40 book chapters. He has performed consultancy work for the US and UK governments and for the European Commission. \nAbout the European Union\nThe European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political union between 27 European countries. The predecessor of the EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries that trade with one another become economically interdependent and so more likely to avoid conflict. The result was the European Economic Community\, created in 1958 with the initial aim of increasing economic cooperation between six countries: Belgium\, Germany\, France\, Italy\, Luxembourg\, and the Netherlands. \nSince then\, 22 more countries joined (and the United Kingdom left the EU in 2020) and a huge single market has been created and continues to develop towards its full potential. What began as a purely economic union has evolved into an organization spanning many different policy areas\, from climate\, environment\, and health to external relations and security\, justice\, and migration. \nCancellation Policy: If you need to cancel\, please do so no later than 48 hours before the event. ACIR is charged for your meal\, so no refund can be provided after that.

SUMMARY:The Ramayana in Art
DESCRIPTION:In the 17th and 18th centuries\, artists produced gloriously illustrated Ramayanas for both Hindu and Muslim rulers. In a lecture titled Beyond Hindu and Muslim: The Courtly Ramayanas of North India\, Debra Diamond\, curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery\, compares four illustrated Ramayanas and explores the diverse meanings of the epic during this period. She will consider how Sanskrit\, Persian\, and Hindi Ramayana manuscripts variously inflected the epic narrative\, and what they reveal about the mechanisms though which a shared Indo-Islamic elite culture was forged. \nThis lecture will be held in Ackerman Hall on Level Three of the Carlos Museum. It is free and open to the Emory community and the public
