DESCRIPTION:The volunteer families of the Atlantic Institute cordially invite the friends of the Atlantic institute to their homes for a fast-breaking dinner during the upcoming Ramadan. \nDuring the month of Ramadan\, Muslims fast by abstaining from consuming water or food while the sun is out. Iftar – or fast breaking – dinners occur each night once the sun sets. This is an important time not only for those who participate in Ramadan because of their faith\, but also it is an important time for gathering with friends and neighbors over delicious food and through lively conversation. It is truly a special time when people of all backgrounds come together and share in the Iftar experience\, learning about different cultures and faiths. \nThis year Ramadan begins on March 22nd depending on the moon sighting. Host families will begin offering the Iftar dinners between March 26th – April 10th. If you have attended Iftar dinners in previous years\, you are more than welcome to attend again\, as many guests do so. \nPlease contact ga@theatlanticinstitute.org for any questions or concerns. \nNote: Fasting is not required for guests. With a talented cast and a captivating storyline\, “Behind the Red Door” offers a must-see theatrical experience that entertains and sheds light on important cultural and social issues. \nAdditionally\, “Behind the Red Door” fearlessly tackles the subject of PTSD and sexual abuse\, shedding light on the effects a silent culture can have on a victim\, its devastating consequences and the healing process survivors endure. By giving voice to the survivors\, the play aims to break the silence surrounding sexual abuse and challenge the social and cultural stigmas that often shroud this issue. It provides a platform for discussions on consent\, survivor support\, and the importance of believing and validating survivors’ experiences. \nThe writer\, director\, and executive producer of this play is a born native of Liberia\, Monrovia. Every topic explored in this production is important to her because it is based on her personal experience. She has partnered with a nonprofit organization called Saprea as her charity of choice to give back proceeds from the play. Saprea exists to liberate individuals and society from child sexual abuse and its lasting impact. Their mission aligns perfectly with Ivis’ cause and so she has joined in the fight for change in hopes that she can impact a global culture that silences the victims by perpetuating certain behaviors. \nBehind the Red Door premieres on August 20th\, 2023.
