SUMMARY:Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month: "First To Go" Film Screening & Director Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Japan-America Society of Georgia celebrates Asian-American Heritage Month through a screening of the short film\, First to Go: Story of the Kataoka Family\, a story of a young girl’s father who was forced from his home and family in 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was first and 120\,000 Americans were next to be forced to relocate to desolate Internment Camps throughout the country. Join us after the 20-minute screening for a behind-the-scenes talk with Director & Producer\, Myles Matsuno\, and discover how we can find hope\, love\, and happiness in the darkest of places and explore how cultural understanding can lead to new ways of promoting peace & harmony in your life. \nFilm: First to Go: Story of the Kataoka Family \nLength: 21 min \nLogline: One December morning in San Francisco\, a young girl’s father was forced from his home and family. He was first and 120\,000 Americans were next. This is her story. \nSynopsis: A couple hours after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941\, Ichiro Kataoka was the first San Francisco Japanese prisoner taken by the FBI from his hotel in Japan Town. Through a series of unfortunate events\, Ichiro would eventually reunite with his family three years later in Topaz\, Utah after President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066\, which forced all Japanese residing on the West Coast to relocate to desolate Internment Camps throughout the country. Their only crime was being of Japanese ancestry.  \nDecades later\, though a collection of footage\, the Kataoka family legacy is being told through Ichiro’s daughter\, great grandson\, and relatives of what this family had endured. Although this was a dark time in America’s history\, we find that love and happiness can blossom in the darkest of places. \nDirected & Produced: Myles Matsuno \nWebsite & Trailer: www.mylesmatsuno.com/first-to-go-story-of-the-kataoka-family

SUMMARY:Stand With Ukraine Series
DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, the world watched in horror as the situation in Ukraine became what is now the largest refugee crisis in Europe since WWII. \nTo continue shedding light on the relief efforts desperately needed in Ukraine\, Atlanta is coming together for a series of events to be held from June 24th through July 4th at Aftercar\, a retro-future-solarpunk-social-house on the Atlanta Beltline founded by Ryan Gravel. \nThis initiative will be anchored around a ‘Stand With Ukraine’ Poster Exhibition led by Curator and UCLA Design Media Arts Lecturer Olga Severina about the challenges and realities in Ukraine today. The exhibition will showcase 60 posters selected from over 1\,000 submissions from across the world. \nIn addition to this exhibit\, several events for children and adults will be held during the opening weekend and on America’s Independence Day\, including a kid’s poster workshop and entertainment segments. \nGenerator\, BrandCulture and PosterTerritory are hosting sponsors of this initiative. Supporting organizations include The Mayor’s Office of International Affairs\, The Ukrainian Association of Graphic Designers\, The Professional Association for Design\, AIGA Atlanta and MODA. She has authored more than 20 books on wine\, including Chasselas – from Féchy to Dézaley – A journey to discover the treasures of the Vaud vineyards and the annual guide Weinseller\, along with her wine magazine Weinseller Journal. She studied at the Universities of Zürich and Lausanne and the Institute of Masters of Wine in London. Putting her experience to practice and following her passion for Switzerland’s indigenous varieties\, she has launched her own line of wines from vineyards in Geneva\, Vaud\, and the Valais. Rather than a purely commercial exercise\, her wines are an extension of her desire to understand the interaction of terroir and variety and to make wines that are not only a pleasure to drink but reveal something unique and special about the wine styles of her home. \nHer collection of wines includes a fresh and vibrantly youthful Chasselas from Geneva aptly named Glou Glou Chasselas\, a range of Chasselas from the distinct terroirs of the Vaud\, and a selection of indigenous varieties and wine styles from the Valais. She assembles each project first by understanding the vineyards\, then guiding the winemaking to be as minimalist as possible. Thus\, what is in the bottle is a pure reflection place and variety. While this may seem overly academic\, it is a great way to begin to understand that the complexity of Swiss wines is truly worth exploring. \n  \nSaturday\, July 9 | Swiss 5k and Fun Run with On Running\n8:00 AM at Fleet Feet-Decatur\n\nFree Event – Break a sweat and demo the best Swiss running shoes in the business – Google Forms RSVP here\nOn Running will be on site with shoes\, gear and local rep Natalie Richardson\nPost run Swiss Slushies and snacks will be served\n\nSunday\, July 10 | Swiss Wine Soirée\n3 PM – 7 PM at Bold Monk Brewing Co.\n\n$40 ticket includes your first glass of Swiss wine\, Swiss inspired small bites\, live Jazz and more – purchase tickets here\nConsul General of Switzerland in Atlanta Peter Zimmerli will give opening remarks\n10 Swiss wines available to try by the glass and by the bottle\nPartners include – Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, Alliance Francaise of Atlanta\, Geothe-Zentrum Atlanta\, Swiss American Society of Atlanta\, On Running\, Perrine’s Wine Shop\, Fleet Feet Decatur and Avant Partir\n\nSpeaker bio: \nPeter Zimmerli\nConsul General\nConsulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta \nBorn in 1957 in Switzerland\, Peter Zimmerli grew up in the canton of Aargau.
