SUMMARY:A Country in Crisis: Venezuela's Stolen Election with Ambassador Charles Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:The Venezuelan presidential election took place on July 28th of this year. The results have been contentious with both the current president Nicolás Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia claiming democratic victory. To worsen matters\, on the 6th of August\, the state of Venezuela launched a criminal probe into both presidential candidate Gonzalez\, as well as opposition party leader Maria Corina Machado. Ambassador Charles Shapiro will explore the recent election in Venezuela\, analyzing its implications for the nation’s future amidst a backdrop of economic turmoil and political instability. \n\n\n\nThe talk will delve into the election’s controversial results\, the reactions from both domestic and international actors\, and the subsequent uprisings that have swept across the country. Can the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) led by President Nicolás Maduro fend off the opposition coalition led by Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia? Ambassador Shapiro will offer insights into the potential paths forward for Venezuela\, considering both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as the country grapples with its deepening crisis. \n\n\n\nWith millions of Venezuelans taking to the streets in protest\, and the country’s wider political landscape a mystery\, there is no better time for Ambassador (Ret.) Shapiro to grace us with his presence to give his thoughts on both the election\, and what the future may hold for such a wonderful country. Please join us for a meal as we unpack this topical issue.  \n\n\n\nComplimentary valet parking is available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmbassador (Ret.) Charles Shapiro\nAmbassador (ret.) SUMMARY:Democracy and Authoritarianism in Pakistan’s Electoral Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Atlanta hosts Arif Alvi\, MD\, former President of Pakistan\, for an intimate dialogue about the state of democracy in the country with the world’s 5th largest population. \n\n\n\nPakistan’s democratic development and political stability continue to face significant challenges due to entrenched military interests within the government and widespread public distrust in the electoral process. The 2024 elections were particularly problematic\, with substantial delays in the release of official results\, leading to widespread allegations of rigging and vote manipulation. Election periods are often marred by violence and security threats\, including attacks by militant groups like the Islamic State targeting election offices. The political landscape remains highly volatile\, marked by frequent legal disputes and the arrest of prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Imran Khan\, which has sparked widespread protests and further instability. Additionally\, Pakistan’s military has increasingly consolidated its control over government leaders and functions\, further complicating efforts to achieve democratic governance and political stability.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Diplomacy Disrupted: How Cuts to U.S. Agencies Are Reshaping Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:In a series of sweeping and controversial moves\, in early 2025 the Trump Administration dismissed thousands of government employees across key institutions that form the backbone of America’s national security\, humanitarianism\, and global engagement. These included the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)\, the Department of State\, the Voice of America (VOA)\, the National Security Council\, and several other critical agencies. The scale and speed of these personnel cuts have raised urgent questions about the future of U.S. diplomacy\, international development\, and the country’s ability to project soft power on the global stage. \n\n\n\nYet\, in a striking reversal\, on June 13\, the Voice of America reinstated dozens of Farsi-speaking journalists who had previously been placed on administrative leave by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This sudden pivot suggests that broadcasting to audiences in Iran has become an unexpected priority\, highlighting the Administration’s shifting strategic focus and the complex interplay between staffing decisions and foreign policy objectives. What are the long-term implications of hollowing out the diplomatic corps while selectively restoring capabilities in high-stakes regions? How might these changes affect America’s influence abroad\, its alliances\, and its ability to respond to global crises? Join the WAC for an in-depth conversation with experts from the American Foreign Service Association as they explore the profound impact of these staffing and funding reductions on the tools of diplomacy and the strategic posture of the United States in an increasingly complex world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Rubin \nAmbassador Eric Rubin was elected to serve as the President of the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) after his recent posting as U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria (2016-2019). Joining the Foreign Service in 1985 after graduating from Yale\, he started as a political and human rights officer in Honduras (1985-1988). In 1989 he was assigned to the State Department’s Operations Center. From 1989 to 1991 he worked in the Office of Soviet Union Affairs where he monitored and reported on the collapse of the Soviet Union. Next\, he served as the security affairs officer for Central and Eastern Europe. He left Washington in 1994 for Kiev\, Ukraine as Deputy Political Counselor. While there he was a recipient of AF[1]SA’s William R. Rivkin Award for Constructive Dissent by Mid-Level Officers for his work on the Bosnia crisis.  \n\n\n\nIn 1996 he returned to Washington to work for the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs. From 1997-1998\, he served as an Assistant White House Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs and in 1998 he was the spe[1]cial assistant to Ambassador Thomas Pickering—then the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. For 1999-2000 Ambassador Rubin was a Rusk Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University where he enjoyed teaching about diplomacy. \n\n\n\nIn 2001 he was posted to Chiang Mai\, Thailand as Consul General. In 2004 he returned to Washington as the director of the Office of Policy Planning and Coordination in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. In 2006 he served as the executive assistant to R. Nicholas Burns—the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs at the time. \n\n\n\nFrom 2008 to 2011 he served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Moscow. And from 2011 to 2015 he served as a deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Ambassador Rubin is married with two children. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhilip A. Shull\nMr. Philip A. Shull has over 30 years of experience as a senior agricultural diplomat and executive with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). In pursuing the mission of expanding food and agricultural exports and promoting global food security\, Mr. Shull has led negotiations\, directed strategic and market development planning\, conducted economic and marketing analysis\, and overseen multi-million dollar marketing\, technical exchange\, and food aid budgets. He has been a persuasive and effective advocate of U.S. and international positions on food and agricultural issues to audiences ranging from cabinet ministers to small farmers\, and represented the U.S. at international agriculture forums on food safety\, sanitary and phyto-sanitary issues\, and biotechnology. \n\n\n\nMr. Shull retired from USDA in 2016 from his position as Minister Counselor for Agriculture at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing\, USDA’s largest and most important overseas post. During his 30+ years with USDA he also directed offices in Manila\, Hong Kong\, Buenos Aires\, Seoul\, Guangzhou\, and twice in Beijing. In his Washington postings\, Mr. Shull served in various capacities involving economic analysis\, trade policy\, and export expansion\, including as director of international marketing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:A Luncheon and Discussion on: "The World Cup 2026 in Atlanta: Can it Rise Above Domestic and Geopolitics?" with CNN International Anchor Don Riddell
DESCRIPTION:The FIFA World Cup is returning to the United States\, in a tournament sprawling across three continents and 16 cities\, Atlanta is going to be front and center of the action. In every way\, FIFA’s flagship tournament is bigger than ever before\, a record 48 teams will now compete for the most coveted sporting trophy on the planet. However\, the sport’s world governing body is also now entangled in world politics in a manner that threatens to undercut its own mantra that “football should take center stage.” \n\n\n\nJoin the Atlanta Council of International Relations for a luncheon to discuss the growth of the World Cup from modest beginnings almost a century ago to the behemoth it has become today. Learn why the game has the potential to unite people globally in ways that the United States has not yet truly experienced with football\, while highlighting how this tournament might be overshadowed by geopolitical concerns and the tense political situation in its main host nation. \n\n\n\nWill the 2026 World Cup showcase the beautiful game at its brightest and best? Or will it be dimmed by corruption and manipulation to further a domestic political agenda? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon RiddellAnchor and Correspondent for CNN International’s World Sport Program\nDon Ridder is an award-winning anchor and correspondent for World Sport\, working out of CNN’s global headquarters in Atlanta.  \n\n\n\nAfter joining CNN in 2002\, Riddell has become one of the network’s longest-serving and most versatile anchors\, having also presented the long-running feature show Living Golf as well as news programs World News and CNN Today. As such\, his interest lies at the intersection of sport\, culture\, technology\, and politics.  \n\n\n\nFrom match-fixing in football to competition manipulation\, athlete abuse\, and ‘sports washing\,’ Riddell’s brief at CNN extends far beyond simply the results and the highlights.  \n\n\n\nSoccer lies at the heart of his passion; he covered the controversial buildup to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and a successful tournament on the ground. He attended the draw for the 2026 tournament in Washington D.C.\, and will be heavily involved in covering FIFA’s expanded tournament across North America this summer.  \n\n\n\nRiddell works across platforms\, broadcasting on television and writing complementary coverage for CNN.com. He has reported on stories from dozens of countries\, speaking to many of the world’s top athletes and profiling stories as diverse as match-fixing and the emergence of eSports. He has covered the Olympics\, the Super Bowl\, all four golf majors\, the Ryder Cup\, various ‘fight nights’ in Las Vegas\, Wimbledon\, the Rugby World Cup\, the Tour de France\, and many Champions League Finals.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to sports\, Riddell has also covered many diverse news stories\, from the Chapecoense plane crash in Brazil to the Royal Wedding in London. From the studio\, he has covered earthquakes\, terror attacks\, and the obituary coverage of Muhammad Ali. He has profiled a variety of personalities from astronauts to prime ministers\, holocaust survivors\, and even the world’s tallest man.  \n\n\n\nRiddell has a bachelor’s degree with honors in Public Media/Communication and Cultural Studies from Leeds University.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
