SUMMARY:Webinar: Racial Inclusion in the Films and Audiovisual Arts Industry
DESCRIPTION:The film and audiovisual arts industry plays a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions\, influencing cultural narratives\, and fostering social change. In Colombia\, Afro-Colombians have long faced underrepresentation and misrepresentation in media\, particularly in film and television. Despite being one of the largest ethnic groups in the country\, Afro-Colombians are often excluded from the narratives that shape national identity and culture. In response Pilas Colombia (PilasCol) has emerged as a leading force in promoting racial inclusion and diversity within Colombia’s audiovisual industry. \n\n\n\nThrough a wide array of projects and initiatives\, PilasCol has made significant strides in creating a more inclusive audiovisual industry while championing the preservation of Black cultural heritage and the advancement of Afro-Colombian cultural industries. \n\n\n\nThis panel discussion will explore PILASCOL’s work in promoting racial inclusion in Colombia’s film and audiovisual arts industry. The discussion will feature the CEO and Executive Producer of Pilas Colombia\, Edwin Salcedo\, who will share insights into the organization’s mission\, achievements\, and vision for a more equitable and diverse media landscape. \n\n\n\nThe Executive Producer will also present the organization’s latest film project\, the mini-series Fronteras\, which aims to highlight Colombia’s ethnic and cultural diversity while enhancing the country’s image in the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:White House Initiative -- AA and NHPI Economic Summit
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 10\, 2024\, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans\, Native Hawaiians\, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) will host its sixth 2023-24 Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Economic Summit in Duluth\, GA with participation from the White House and federal agencies. The events are being held in collaboration with the Small Business Administration\, U.S. Department of the Treasury\, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization\, the National Asian / Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship\, and other federal agencies. Please note that this is a re-scheduled Economic Summit that was originally planned for October 6\, 2023. \nLanguage barriers and limited outreach have historically held AA and NHPIs back from applying for federal procurement\, jobs\, grants\, and programs. Although approximately 10 percent of small businesses in the U.S. are AA and NHPI-owned\, only 2.8 percent of federal contracting dollars went to AA and NHPI small businesses in Fiscal Year 2020\, according to the Small Business Administration. In May 2021\, President Joe Biden re-established and reinvigorated WHIAANHPI through Executive Order 14031. The Initiative’s whole-of-government approach engages federal agencies to improve interagency policymaking\, program development\, and outreach\, and address barriers impacting AA and NHPIs across the country.

SUMMARY:Reflecting America in the U.S. Foreign Service
DESCRIPTION:The U.S Department of State is struggling to reflect the country it represents. In 2020\, only 57 percent of Americans identified as “white only.” That same year\, a Government Accountability Office report found that women and racial minorities working in the State Department were nearly 30 percent less likely to be promoted than their white counterparts.\n\n“There’s no one way to define diversity\,” said Ambassador (Ret.) Harry K. Thomas Jr. who introduced innovative recruiting programs during his tenure as Director General of the Foreign Service. “Diversity across organizations like the State Department\, USAID and the Peace Corps makes the United States much stronger overseas.”\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, February 10\, 2022\, as we sit down with Ambassador Thomas for a candid conversation on how fostering diversity and inclusion will strengthen the State Department and\, as a result\, U.S. foreign policy at large.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk with Dr. Krishauna Hines-Gaither: Dimensions of Oppression (Personal\, Interpersonal\, Institutional\, Systemic\, Cultural)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Kennesaw State University Center for African and African Diaspora Studies as they welcome Dr. Krishauna Hines-Gaither for their spring conversation series\, “Let’s Talk with Dr. Krishauna Hines-Gaither.” \nThis workshop presents the five dimensions of oppression and offers examples of each\, as well as strategies for combating them. Many individuals are not equipped to combat oppression because they have failed to name it. Some are fighting the wrong fight. They may be attacking an issue on an interpersonal level\, that really needs an institutional response. Powerful change can happen when there is a systematic understanding about the inner workings of the dimensions of oppression. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Krishauna Hines-Gaither serves as the Associate Vice President for Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion at Guilford College in Greensboro\, NC. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has worked in the field of diversity for over 15 years. Before becoming an administrator\, Dr. Hines-Gaither was a college professor for almost two decades. She taught Spanish\, (Afro)Latin American Studies\, African Diaspora Studies and Women and Gender Studies. She is a frequent speaker\, trainer and scholar on a variety of topics related to inclusion. Dr. Hines-Gaither has been quoted in national publications\, and she is a leading diversity consultant to top rated U.S. and international companies. Dr. Hines-Gaither is also a popular blogger at Cup of Diversity.com.

SUMMARY:Roundtable Discussion: Student Views on Inclusion in the Global Workplace
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nWith Atlanta’s growth as a global business hub\, corporate initiatives on diversity\, equity\, and social justice are intersecting in new ways with their mandate to cultivate a culturally competent workforce. \nA new sense of urgency seems to have gripped the business community with the racial reckoning after George Floyd’s death and the inequities spotlighted by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. \nAs one of the most concentrated higher education hubs in the U.S.\, Atlanta is graduating thousands of increasingly diverse future workers who demand bold action on these crucial issues. And with a worker shortage already taking hold in some sectors\, how well companies can meet students’ demands for meaningful social action in their workplace will become a competitiveness issue. \nAre companies ready for this new recruitment reality? Are students empowered to make their voices heard? Or does a diversity divide persist? \nJoin the Race Beyond Borders initiative for a lively\, honest conversation with Atlanta-area students. Race Beyond Borders initiative is coordinated by the Atlanta Global Studies Center. For more information: https://atlantaglobalstudies.gatech.edu/Race-Beyond-Borders \nModerator:\nTrevor Williams\, Managing Editor\, Global Atlanta \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \nSpeakers:\nFana Ruth HaileSelassie\, President\, Student Government Association\, International Studies major & graduating senior\, Spelman College \n  \n  \nMark Lannaman\, Broadcast Journalism major & graduating senior\, Georgia State University; Fellow\, Every Learner Everywhere; Associate Producer for “Crucial Conversations”\, African American Male Initiative at GSU \n  \n  \nPeter Roberts\, Professor of Organization & Management; Academic Director of Specialty Coffee Programs at The Roberto C.
