SUMMARY:Care in Architecture and Design: A Talk at Atlanta Design Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, architects and designers Aurélia Martin and Mathilde Van Steenkiste founded Les Grandes\, a Paris-based studio dedicated to issues at the intersection of architecture\, disability\, and mental health. Their practice combines research\, experimentation\, and design to rethink how spaces can care for both their occupants and their environments\, contributing to a more inclusive society. \n\n\n\nAs part of the Atlanta Design Festival’s Creative Futures Conference\, Martin and Van Steenkiste will present their talk “Care in Architecture and Design: From the Circular Economy to Disability.” Drawing on projects developed in France and abroad\, they will discuss their approach as practitioners committed to integrating care into architectural thinking. \n\n\n\nTheir transatlantic exploration began in 2024\, when they spent three months in the United States studying innovative models of senior housing through the AIA’s Delano & Aldrich/Emerson grant. This research will culminate in a book and exhibition planned for 2026. \n\n\n\nIn 2025\, the duo returns to the U.S. as Villa Albertine Atlanta residents with Quilt and Care\, a project at the crossroads of healthcare research\, textile design\, and autism studies. During their October residency\, they will collaborate with local partners to imagine how fabrics and designed objects can become tools for care and connection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Philosophy as translation: A conversation with Souleymane Bachir Diagne
DESCRIPTION:Villa Albertine and Emory University are delighted to welcome philosopher Souleymane Bachir Diagne to Atlanta for a conversation on philosophy\, translation\, and transatlantic dialogues\, with Associate Professor of French and African Studies Subha Xavier. \n\n\n\nSouleymane Bachir Diagne is a leading philosopher and public intellectual from Senegal. Professor Emeritus of French and Philosophy at Columbia University\, he directed the Institute of African Studies for a decade. His work bridges African\, Islamic\, and European intellectual traditions\, offering a vision of philosophy as a truly global\, plural\, and dialogical practice. \n\n\n\nAuthor of numerous landmark books\, Diagne has illuminated fields ranging from Islamic thought to African philosophy\, postcolonial studies\, and the history of ideas. His major works include Bergson Postcolonial: The Elan Vital in the Thought of Léopold Sédar Senghor and Muhammad Iqbal (2011)\, The Ink of the Scholars: Reflections on Philosophy in Africa (2016)\, Open to Reason: Muslim Philosophers in Conversation with the Western Tradition (2018)\, and Postcolonial Bergson (2019). More recently\, he has reexamined universalism in In Search of Africa(s): Universalism and Decolonial Thought (2022)\, explored aesthetics and identity in African Art as Philosophy: Senghor\, Bergson and the Idea of Negritude (2023)\, and developed a compelling theory of translation in From Language to Language: The Hospitality of Translation (2024). \n\n\n\nFor Diagne\, translation is not merely a linguistic exercise but a philosophical act of hospitality—a way of making ideas travel across languages\, cultures\, and histories while preserving their multiplicity. In this spirit\, he has consistently advocated for philosophy as a practice of openness\, dialogue\, and mutual transformation across traditions. \n\n\n\nHis contributions have been widely recognized: he received the Edouard Glissant Award in 2011\, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019\, and in 2024 was named Chaire du Louvre in Paris. \n\n\n\nThis Atlanta conversation will be an opportunity to engage with one of today’s most inspiring thinkers\, and to reflect on how philosophy\, like translation\, can serve as a bridge across cultures and worlds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:Mind the Gap: Bridging Franco-American Cultural Differences at Work
DESCRIPTION:Despite the long-standing friendship between the U.S. and France\, the cultural gaps between French and Americans are as different as Coca-Cola and a fine Bordeaux. In today’s fast-paced and complex global environment\, increasing understanding of the impact culture has on communication and work practices is the key to driving harmonious working relationships between the two cultures. This interactive presentation will highlight some of the historical and cultural factors that have shaped the beliefs and values in each country and how they impact behaviors at work. FACC Atlanta members will gain new insights into the main barriers that impede communication and collaboration and learn tips to optimize engagement with their French or American colleagues and clients. \n\n\n\nPresenter \n\n\n\nJulia Gaspar-Bates\, M.A.\, is President of Intercultural Alliances\, LLC (www.interculturalalliances.com) a cross-cultural training and consulting firm based in Washington DC. A British-American\, Julia started her career in Paris\, where she lived and worked for nearly eight years. She has trained thousands of leaders and teams on five continents to help them increase their intercultural sensitivity\, knowledge\, and skills to successfully navigate the complexities and opportunities of working across cultural and geographic borders. Julia is currently co-writing a book with a colleague in Paris on cultural differences between the French and Americans at work\, a journey that has only deepened her awareness of the cultural differences between the two countries and how to best resolve them. Julia holds a Master’s of Arts in Intercultural Relations and spent 10 years teaching at George Washington University. She is also an active member of the FACC Washington DC for whom she has given frequent presentations over the years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Walid Hajar Rachedi: Connections Between Literature and Rap
DESCRIPTION:Join Villa Albertine Atlanta and Atlanta Contemporary as they kick off the Villa’s 2025 season of residencies with this event featuring French writer and publisher Walid Hajar Rachedi \n\n\n\nDuring the event\, Walid Hajar Rachedi will talk about his work as an author\, making connections between literature and rap. \n\n\n\nSince its beginnings\, rap has continuously invoked literature. Whether it’s through claimed lineage\, tribute\, or a strong nod\, the words of so-called legitimate culture permeate the works of all generations of rappers. While the influence of literature on rap is often discussed\, the reverse is less common. Confined to the role of counter-culture\, or even ‘sub-culture\,’ relegated to the margins of literary studies\, rap\, however\, inspires the new literary scene: many writers grew up with this music\, cite rap albums among their major references\, and have drawn inspiration from it to approach language and the world in their first manuscripts. How does this influence manifest? What bridges are formed between these two art forms? What does it reveal about the impact of rap on literature and culture? \n\n\n\n© Annie Gozard\n\n\n\nWALID HAJAR RACHEDI is a French author and publisher exploring identity\, immigration\, and societal fractures through his project What’s Left of the American Dream. Born in France in 1981 to Algerian parents\, he has lived in Latin America and the U.S. His debut novel\, Qu’est-ce que j’irais faire au paradis?\, was a finalist for the Goncourt Prize in 2022\, and his second novel\, Nos destins sont liés\, was deeply influenced by rap\, one of his foundational inspirations. He is also the co-founder of Frictions\, a renowned media platform known for long-form investigative storytelling and podcasts on global social issues. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Walid Hajar Rachedi’s residency project with Villa Albertine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

Moreover\, the premiere was directly connected to the founding of the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs and the establishment of the Atlanta-Lagos Sister City partnership\, which both celebrated their 50th anniversary just recently. \n\n\n\nHISTORICAL BACKGROUND \n\n\n\nNigerian executive producer Francis Oladele (1932-2015) established Calpenny Nigeria Films Limited – the first independent film production company in Nigeria – in 1965 with the intention of providing a platform for artistic expression in a more profound way and opening the Nigerian arts to an international audience. Oladele succeeded in hiring the American Ossie Davis\, a close friend of Malcom X and very active in the civil rights movement\, as director for this first project. Things Fall Apart\, Oladele‘s second feature film\, is another key part of the beginnings of Nigeria’s Pre-Nollywood movie industry. The film\, made by a few international but mostly local crew members\, was directed by German director Jason Pohland. \n\n\n\nIn Germany\, the film premier triggered a series of official trips to five West African countries immediately afterward expressing the growing importance of German-African partnerships. \n\n\n\nIn the US\, the film premiered a full four years after production in Nigeria due to an apparent difficulty in finding a distributor for the film. \n\n\n\nUnder the patronage of Maynard Jackson\, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta\, the African-American society attended the premiere in 1974. Chinua Achebe and Francis Oladele\, Maynard Jackson’s brother-in-law\, were among the 200+ guests. \n\n\n\nThe photographs in the exhibition show Chinua Achebe on set\, the Ugandan princess\, lawyer and later diplomat Elizabeth of Toro\, who shortly after shooting the film became Uganda‘s foreign minister; the in 1899 in Lagos born actor Orlando Martins – Nigeria‘s first international film star – in his last role as Obierika; John Sekka\, the popular Senegalese actor in the leading role of Obi Okonkwo; co-founder of Lagos Freedom Park Iyabo Aboaba in her role as Bisi. \n\n\n\nOther crew members later made great careers in the film industry: the still photographer Stephen Goldblatt became a director of photography\, shot Batman films and was nominated twice for an Oscar; the assistant editor Alhaji Arulogun became one of Nigeria’s pioneer broadcasters and later headed several ministries for the state government of Oyo State; Ivan Sharrock\, the sound mixer\, won two Oscars. \n\n\n\nASSOCIATED EVENTS \n\n\n\nFilm Screening “Things Fall Apart” \n\n\n\nDate\, time\, and loation TBA \n\n\n\nFollow the Kultur Ensemble to receive notifications about additional events and ticket sales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
