SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Walid Hajar Rachedi: Connections Between Literature and Rap
DESCRIPTION:Join Villa Albertine Atlanta and Atlanta Contemporary as they kick off the Villa’s 2025 season of residencies with this event featuring French writer and publisher Walid Hajar Rachedi \n\n\n\nDuring the event\, Walid Hajar Rachedi will talk about his work as an author\, making connections between literature and rap. \n\n\n\nSince its beginnings\, rap has continuously invoked literature. Whether it’s through claimed lineage\, tribute\, or a strong nod\, the words of so-called legitimate culture permeate the works of all generations of rappers. While the influence of literature on rap is often discussed\, the reverse is less common. Confined to the role of counter-culture\, or even ‘sub-culture\,’ relegated to the margins of literary studies\, rap\, however\, inspires the new literary scene: many writers grew up with this music\, cite rap albums among their major references\, and have drawn inspiration from it to approach language and the world in their first manuscripts. How does this influence manifest? What bridges are formed between these two art forms? What does it reveal about the impact of rap on literature and culture? \n\n\n\n© Annie Gozard\n\n\n\nWALID HAJAR RACHEDI is a French author and publisher exploring identity\, immigration\, and societal fractures through his project What’s Left of the American Dream. Born in France in 1981 to Algerian parents\, he has lived in Latin America and the U.S. His debut novel\, Qu’est-ce que j’irais faire au paradis?\, was a finalist for the Goncourt Prize in 2022\, and his second novel\, Nos destins sont liés\, was deeply influenced by rap\, one of his foundational inspirations. He is also the co-founder of Frictions\, a renowned media platform known for long-form investigative storytelling and podcasts on global social issues. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Walid Hajar Rachedi’s residency project with Villa Albertine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Things Fall Apart: Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Kultur Ensemble Atlanta (a collaboration between the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta and the Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta) is excited to present: \n\n\n\nCelebrate the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the Nigerian-American-German movie “Things Fall Apart” in Atlanta and discover the story of the groundbreaking African film\, its deep ties to Atlanta\, the Black film industry\, Black heroes\, Oscar winners\, Civil Rights\, and ATL’s rise as a global city. \n\n\n\nThe son of filmmaker Francis Oladele\, Lanre Oladele\, will be present at the opening and part of a panel discussion on the impact of the novel and the movie in Nigeria\, the USA\, and beyond. \n\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT \n\n\n\n6:00 PM open \n\n\n\n7:00 PM reception and speeches \n\n\n\nHOSTS & ORGANIZERS \n\n\n\nKultur Ensemble Atlanta (Goethe-Zentrum & Alliance Francaise of Atlanta) \n\n\n\nModern Film Archives\, Berlin \n\n\n\nCity of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs & Gallery 72 \n\n\n\nCity of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of International & Immigrant Affairs \n\n\n\nGerman Federal Office for Foreign Affairs / Consulate General of Germany in Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION DESCRIPTION \n\n\n\nCreated in 1971 in Nigeria\, little was known about the circumstances and the making of the film Things Fall Apart until the images were discovered in the estate of the late film director Jason Pohland. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, a cross-cultural collaboration\, showcases the long lost documents of the making of the film with a collection of still photo prints by accomplished cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt. \n\n\n\nThe film and the exhibition highlight the connection and struggle between Africa and the West\, between generations and cultures\, and also the story of Nigerian-Atlantan collaboration\, the shaping of modern\, global Atlanta and Sister Cities relationships\, the Black film industry\, African royalty\, and ATL-local high-profile changemakers. \n\n\n\nThe 1974 premiere of Things Fall Apart in Atlanta draws direct connections to the election of Maynard Jackson in the same year\, as the Nigerian co-producer\, legendary filmmaker Francis Oladele\, was his brother-in-law. Moreover\, the premiere was directly connected to the founding of the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs and the establishment of the Atlanta-Lagos Sister City partnership\, which both celebrated their 50th anniversary just recently. \n\n\n\nHISTORICAL BACKGROUND \n\n\n\nNigerian executive producer Francis Oladele (1932-2015) established Calpenny Nigeria Films Limited – the first independent film production company in Nigeria – in 1965 with the intention of providing a platform for artistic expression in a more profound way and opening the Nigerian arts to an international audience. Oladele succeeded in hiring the American Ossie Davis\, a close friend of Malcom X and very active in the civil rights movement\, as director for this first project. Things Fall Apart\, Oladele‘s second feature film\, is another key part of the beginnings of Nigeria’s Pre-Nollywood movie industry. The film\, made by a few international but mostly local crew members\, was directed by German director Jason Pohland. \n\n\n\nIn Germany\, the film premier triggered a series of official trips to five West African countries immediately afterward expressing the growing importance of German-African partnerships. \n\n\n\nIn the US\, the film premiered a full four years after production in Nigeria due to an apparent difficulty in finding a distributor for the film. \n\n\n\nUnder the patronage of Maynard Jackson\, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta\, the African-American society attended the premiere in 1974. Chinua Achebe and Francis Oladele\, Maynard Jackson’s brother-in-law\, were among the 200+ guests. \n\n\n\nThe photographs in the exhibition show Chinua Achebe on set\, the Ugandan princess\, lawyer and later diplomat Elizabeth of Toro\, who shortly after shooting the film became Uganda‘s foreign minister; the in 1899 in Lagos born actor Orlando Martins – Nigeria‘s first international film star – in his last role as Obierika; John Sekka\, the popular Senegalese actor in the leading role of Obi Okonkwo; co-founder of Lagos Freedom Park Iyabo Aboaba in her role as Bisi. \n\n\n\nOther crew members later made great careers in the film industry: the still photographer Stephen Goldblatt became a director of photography\, shot Batman films and was nominated twice for an Oscar; the assistant editor Alhaji Arulogun became one of Nigeria’s pioneer broadcasters and later headed several ministries for the state government of Oyo State; Ivan Sharrock\, the sound mixer\, won two Oscars. \n\n\n\nASSOCIATED EVENTS \n\n\n\nFilm Screening “Things Fall Apart” \n\n\n\nDate\, time\, and loation TBA \n\n\n\nFollow the Kultur Ensemble to receive notifications about additional events and ticket sales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:French in Higher Education: A Regional Seminar for Growth and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the annual France-Atlanta series organized by Georgia Tech and the Embassy of France in the United States. \n\n\n\nVilla Albertine\, in partnership with Georgia Tech’s French program in the School of Modern Languages\, welcomes you to a France-Atlanta seminar\, French in Higher Education: A Regional Seminar for Growth and Sustainability. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the French Embassy in the United States and Villa Albertine initiative for French in Higher Education. The initiative aims to support and foster innovation in French and Francophone studies across U.S. universities\, with a particular focus on addressing the critical challenge of increasing student enrollment. \n\n\n\nIn today’s globalized world\, understanding diverse communities\, excelling in international business\, and addressing global challenges are more important than ever. Language education is a key component of a well-rounded academic experience\, and learning French opens doors to a deeper appreciation of Francophone cultures\, histories\, and perspectives. Recruiting more students into French programs is thus essential to ensuring their sustainability and growth. Engaging with the cultural dimensions of the language not only enhances linguistic proficiency but also fosters cross-cultural understanding and empathy — essential skills in our interconnected world. \n\n\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas\, collaborate on new initiatives\, and contribute to a global conversation about making French programs more dynamic\, resilient\, and relevant. Key topics will include effective communication with administration\, creating engaging study abroad programs\, implementing new teaching methodologies to connect with a diverse student body\, overcoming recruitment challenges\, strategies to attract students to French programs\, integrating digital tools and resources\, building interdisciplinary connections\, and creating professional pathways that link language learning with career opportunities. \n\n\n\nBy the end of this seminar\, participants will have identified strategies and best practices to maintain and attract new students. \n\n\n\nThis regional seminar is open to all French teachers and department heads from universities in Alabama\, Georgia\, Mississippi\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Ethics as a Competitive Advantage: AI Ethics in France
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the annual France-Atlanta series organized by Georgia Tech and the Embassy of France in the United States. \n\n\n\nThe recent establishment of France’s National Consultative Committee on Digital Ethics through Executive Order (“Décret 2024-463 of May 23\, 2024 portant creation du Comité Consultatif National d’Ethique du Numérique) is a significant step in the French debate on digital ethics with potential impacts on AI governance. Given the rapid integration of digital applications\, including AI systems\, into all aspects of our lives and the proliferation of disparate regulations\, the committee’s role is particularly intriguing from the current US approach to AI governance. This raises critical questions: Why did France opt for this institutional approach? How does it align with broader French and European digital policies and institutional landscapes? What is the committee’s expected mandate and anticipated impact on crucial issues like the metaverse\, digital health\, healthcare clinical research\, generative AI\, facial recognition\, or digital democracy? \n\n\n\nWelcoming Dr. Claude Kirchner\, the Director of the national pilot committee on digital ethics that prefigured this newly introduced but not already active committee. He would provide valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of perceiving Ethics as a competitive advantage in digital innovation and especially in AI systems. \n\n\n\nFrance-Atlanta is an annual series of high-caliber events\, centered on innovation and designed to foster transatlantic cooperation and exchange in the fields of science\, business\, culture and global issues. This year\, 2024\, marks France-Atlanta’s 15th edition. The event series is co-organized by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology\, under the high auspices of the Ambassador of France to the United States\, the Governor of Georgia and the Mayor of Atlanta. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Taste the World in Marseille
DESCRIPTION:Join Villa Albertine and the VanTrece Hospitality Group for a dinner celebrating food\, culture\, and Vérane Frédiani’s new book on Marseille’s multicultural culinary scene. This event will include a conversation with the author and a collaborative 8-course tasting menu prepared by iconic Atlanta chef Deborah VanTrece and Congolese chef Hugues Mbenda from Marseille. \n\n\n\nTaste the World in Marseille (2024\, Abrams Books) is an illustrated cookbook by Vérane Frédiani which offers insights into the multicultural cuisine of Marseille\, France’s oldest and second-largest city. Though renowned for its Mediterranean character and vibrant diversity\, Marseille remains little understood despite being at the forefront of French cuisine. \n\n\n\nThe event will kick off at 6:30pm with a discussion with author Vérane Frédiani\, translator Alexis Steinman\, and Chef Deborah VanTrece on the role of multiculturalism in gastronomy today\, moderated by Mike Jordan\, Senior Editor at the Atlanta Journal Constitution.  \n\n\n\nThen\, at 7pm\, we will begin the 8-course tasting menu prepared by chefs Deborah VanTrece and Hugues Mbenda. Each chef will concept and execute 1 passed hors d’oeuvre and 4 dishes inspired by Vérane Frédiani’s book\, Taste the World in Marseille. This unique collaboration between Mbenda’s Franco-Congolese cuisine and VanTrece’s globally-influenced soul food will celebrate the multiculturalism of Marseille and Atlanta—and the power of food to connect us.  \n\n\n\nThe dinner will be ticketed at a cost of $175 for 8 courses paired with French wine or $135 for 8 courses paired with sparkling water or iced tea. Reserve your spot today! \n\n\n\nDuring the evening\, we will also host a book signing with the author\, Vérane Frédiani\, and the translator of the English version\, Alexis Steinman. Our partner bookstore\, A Cappella Books\, will be on-site selling copies of Taste the World in Marseille. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
