SUMMARY:The Inequality of Parts… The Beauty Of The Whole by Barkinado Bocoum
DESCRIPTION:Barkinado’s work often resembles an assembly of mosaics\, each a part of something infinitely larger\, and each oddly unsettling the other parts and yet they come together in a beautiful whole. The origin of this style of painting is simple in that initially he lacked the resources to purchase proper canvases and so he used simple A4 papers. As he filled each one\, he simply added more and more of them\, taping them together to create large figurative works. Later he realized that taping them together and off center seems to refract light and images in complex fractured portraits. Though each sheet has its own significance taken together they weave a whole albeit with multiple and distinctive perspectives. The gaze of his subjects is often weary and melancholy – almost as if their incredible beauty is too heavy a load to carry. It is this gaze that lends the added perspective of a peoples gazed upon – looking back at the world with a deep understanding that almost says: ‘you can’t even begin to understand me.’ \n\n\n\nRegister Today! \n\n\n\nAnnouncement from aKAZ! ATL: \n\n\n\nThe trials and tribulations of running a trans-continental art gallery mean that sometimes: \n\n\n\nthe art gets here and the artist doesn’t\, and sometimes\, the artist arrives and the work does not! \n\n\n\nBarkinado arrived on Monday this week minus his artwork. Air France just informed us that the artwork has been located – and – it is still in Dakar. They promise to expedite it. But clearly we can’t open the show this Sunday and so with a heavy heart we are rescheduling the Opening of Barkinado Bocoum’s ‘The Inequality of Parts … the Beauty of the Whole to Saturday\, September 21 at 3:00 pm AND the PARTY will be even better. The good news is that Barkinado will hang out in the ATL until then and you will all still be able to meet him. \n\n\n\nSee you on Saturday\, Sept 21 at 3:00 pm- and once again our sincere apologies. \n\n\n\nGreetings\, \n\n\n\nAnja\, Jumbe\, Jean Patrick Guichard (Gallery Miriam) and Barkinado \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift & Sharing Veteran Memories
DESCRIPTION:The Consulate General of Germany in Atlanta and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta invite to join our friendship get-together with German food and an exhibition celebrating 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. \n\n\n\n– visit an exhibit about the Berliner Luftbrücke / Berlin AirLift on the occasion of the 75th anniversary– bring mementos from being stationed in or having visited Germany to share with fellow Germany enthusiasts– Open Mic to Share German-American Experiences\, stories and memories– enjoy a catered dinner– introduction of the brand-new GoetheATL project “Veterans for Freundschaft” \n\n\n\nSEATS ARE LIMITED. Get your tickets today! \n\n\n\nHistorical Background: \n\n\n\nThe Berlin Blockade (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post–World War II Germany\, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies’ railway\, road\, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutsche Mark from West Berlin. \n\n\n\nThe Western Allies organized the Berlin Airlift (German: Berliner Luftbrücke\, lit. “Berlin Air Bridge”) from 26 June 1948 to 30 September 1949 to carry supplies to the people of West Berlin\, a difficult feat given the size of the city and the population. American and British air forces flew over Berlin more than 250\,000 times\, dropping necessities such as fuel and food\, with the original plan being to lift 3\,475 tons[clarification needed] of supplies daily.[citation needed] By the spring of 1949\, that number was often met twofold\, with the peak daily delivery totaling 12\,941 tons. Among these was the work of the later concurrent Operation Little Vittles in which candy-dropping aircraft dubbed “raisin bombers” generated much goodwill among German children. \n\n\n\nHaving initially concluded there was no way the airlift could work\, the Soviets found its continued success an increasing embarrassment. On 12 May 1949\, the USSR lifted the blockade of West Berlin\, due to economic issues in East Berlin\, although for a time the Americans and British continued to supply the city by air as they were worried that the Soviets would resume the blockade and were only trying to disrupt western supply lines. The Berlin Airlift officially ended on 30 September 1949 after fifteen months. The US Air Force had delivered 1\,783\,573 tons (76.4% of total) and the RAF 541\,937 tons (23.3% of total)\, totaling 2\,334\,374 tons\, nearly two-thirds of which was coal\, on 278\,228 flights to Berlin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
