SUMMARY:“Je Me Soulève” Movie Screening: Atlanta Francophonie Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta Francophonie Festival for a screening of the movie Je Me Soulève (2022) by Hugo Latulippe. \nThis screening will be in French with English subtitles. \nSYNOPSIS: Twenty young actors are brought together for a creation lab by stage directors Véronique and Gabrielle Côté\, to create a collective work at one of the great national theatres. Over a full year\, they scour contemporary Québécois poetry to tap into the spirit of the times. Whether in workshop settings or at the four corners of the territory\, we watch the creative process of Je me soulève unfold. What kind of people will we be in the future? How can art transform the world? Will we still be able to have children? Rebellious\, filled with the passion of those who dream of beauty\, obeying only their intuition\, they come together to forge an ode to life. And when one of theirs is elected to the Quebec’s National Assembly\, poetry literally becomes an integral part of the country’s political landscape. \nClick here to watch the trailer (in French). \nDirected by: Hugo Latulippe \nThis event is made possible by the Quebec Government Office in Atlanta

SUMMARY:Swiss Consulate Documentary Screening: 'Inferno in Paradiso'
DESCRIPTION:The Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta has the pleasure to collaborate once again with the Department of French and Italian of the Emory College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in the context of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo. This year’s Settimana (Oct. 16-22) had the theme “Italian and Sustainability” (L’italiano e la sostenibilità)\, which is why we will be screening the Swiss environmental documentary INFERNO IN PARADISO. \n\n\n\nAbout the film: In Salento\, cancer has increased by 40%; the air\, the earth and the water are poisoned\, the land of the “Mediterranean diet” has become a Hell in Paradise. This beautiful region is being used for a giant garbage dump. How did such pervasive pollution come to this rural area? We traveled South to witness the damage\, to meet those who live in this hell\, and to see if and how they can cope. All is not lost: there is organized resistance\, with criminal and civil cases underway against the Italian State. The film\, beginning and ending in Switzerland\, is a heartfelt cry to put a stop to the unconscionable greed that has so much harmed the people and their land. \n\n\n\nYou will be able to watch the movie in Italian with English subtitles. The Swiss director of the movie\, Tiziana Caminada\, is pleased to join us via video to answer your questions at the end of the screening. The event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nJoin for this insightful story on Thursday\, November 30\, 2023\, at 6:30 PM at Emory University (Goodrich C. White Hall\, room #112). Doors open at 6:30 PM and the screening starts at 7 PM. Refreshments will be served prior to the screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

Moreover\, the premiere was directly connected to the founding of the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs and the establishment of the Atlanta-Lagos Sister City partnership\, which both celebrated their 50th anniversary just recently. \n\n\n\nHISTORICAL BACKGROUND \n\n\n\nNigerian executive producer Francis Oladele (1932-2015) established Calpenny Nigeria Films Limited – the first independent film production company in Nigeria – in 1965 with the intention of providing a platform for artistic expression in a more profound way and opening the Nigerian arts to an international audience. Oladele succeeded in hiring the American Ossie Davis\, a close friend of Malcom X and very active in the civil rights movement\, as director for this first project. Things Fall Apart\, Oladele‘s second feature film\, is another key part of the beginnings of Nigeria’s Pre-Nollywood movie industry. The film\, made by a few international but mostly local crew members\, was directed by German director Jason Pohland. \n\n\n\nIn Germany\, the film premier triggered a series of official trips to five West African countries immediately afterward expressing the growing importance of German-African partnerships. \n\n\n\nIn the US\, the film premiered a full four years after production in Nigeria due to an apparent difficulty in finding a distributor for the film. \n\n\n\nUnder the patronage of Maynard Jackson\, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta\, the African-American society attended the premiere in 1974. Chinua Achebe and Francis Oladele\, Maynard Jackson’s brother-in-law\, were among the 200+ guests. \n\n\n\nThe photographs in the exhibition show Chinua Achebe on set\, the Ugandan princess\, lawyer and later diplomat Elizabeth of Toro\, who shortly after shooting the film became Uganda‘s foreign minister; the in 1899 in Lagos born actor Orlando Martins – Nigeria‘s first international film star – in his last role as Obierika; John Sekka\, the popular Senegalese actor in the leading role of Obi Okonkwo; co-founder of Lagos Freedom Park Iyabo Aboaba in her role as Bisi. \n\n\n\nOther crew members later made great careers in the film industry: the still photographer Stephen Goldblatt became a director of photography\, shot Batman films and was nominated twice for an Oscar; the assistant editor Alhaji Arulogun became one of Nigeria’s pioneer broadcasters and later headed several ministries for the state government of Oyo State; Ivan Sharrock\, the sound mixer\, won two Oscars. \n\n\n\nASSOCIATED EVENTS \n\n\n\nFilm Screening “Things Fall Apart” \n\n\n\nDate\, time\, and loation TBA \n\n\n\nFollow the Kultur Ensemble to receive notifications about additional events and ticket sales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
