SUMMARY:Lung Cancer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Lung cancer is a truly global problem\, causing more deaths in both men and women than any other cancer worldwide. Despite improved treatments that have led to decreased mortality rates\, the fight against the disease remains a top priority for scientists. \nEmory University’s Winship Cancer Institute Executive Director Walter J. Curran Jr.\, MD; Deputy Director Suresh Ramalingam\, MD; and Director of Canceropole du Grand-Ouest in France Gilles Favre\, MD; will chair this workshop\, which gathers outstanding French and American researchers and clinicians for a discussion on screening and latest developments in thoracic malignancy research. Interactive question-and-answer sessions provide the opportunity to engage with faculty as they share their perspective and personal experience on the clinical challenges and ongoing trials in lung cancer management. This conference also offers opportunities for networking and collaboration.

SUMMARY:Topics in Global Health: Mobile to Multiplex
DESCRIPTION:Join experts from nongovernmental organizations\, industry\, and government as they examine how to meet the needs for diagnostics in global health in the absence of resources to develop these technologies. \nLow- and middle-income countries have made significant progress in reducing the burden of infectious diseases. But sustaining these gains will require more low-cost diagnostics to support population-level health programs. These range from basic laboratory tests to diagnose infections to sophisticated molecular diagnostics for assessing the presence of multiple pathogens within populations. How do they address this challenge when the people who need these technologies can least afford them? A panel of the world’s leading diagnostic experts will examine this issue from multiple perspectives and offer solutions for accelerating innovation in this space. \nKeynote Address: “Harnessing High Tech for Global Health”\nDan Fletcher\, PhD\, University of California at Berkeley. Inventor of the LoaScope that turns a smartphone into a high-quality light microscope for diagnosing parasitic infections. \nPanelists \n\nDianna Blau\, DVM\, PhD\, laboratory and diagnostics leader\, Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) program (seconded from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)\nJ. Brandon Dixon\, PhD\, associate professor\, bioengineering\, Georgia Tech\nJessica Fairley\, MD\, infectious disease specialist\, Emory University\nPatrick Lammie\, PhD\, senior scientist\, Neglected Tropical Diseases Support Center\, The Task Force for Global Health

SUMMARY:The Gender Dynamics of Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:Transmissions of COVID-19 in developing countries and those experiencing ongoing humanitarian emergencies are on the rise.\n\nFighting this pandemic with resources and strong government institutions has proved to be challenging even in countries such as the UK and the U.S.\, imagine this scenario in the developing world where reality is a tale of constrained resources and lack of basic infrastructure.\n\nThen comes the social norms in these developing countries where women and girls come last.\n\nSocial norms\, such as expectations that women and girls are responsible for doing domestic chores and nursing sick family members\, can expose women and girls to greater health risks during COVID-19. CARE USA works in humanitarian relief in these developing countries and now they have the difficult task to ensure that these women and girls are protected from becoming easy targets of this pandemic.\n\nJoin the World Affairs Council of Atlanta via Zoom to discuss with Camille Davis\, Senior Manager\, Humanitarian Resource Mobilization\, CARE USA\, the implications that COVID-19 will have on gender equality in the developing world.\n\nOrganized by the Young Leaders Executive Board. OPEN TO ALL.

SUMMARY:Why Are There No Face Masks?
DESCRIPTION:The shortage of face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) is real.\nThe situation has become so dire that some health care workers have resorted to unprecedented (forced) break in protocol by wearing bandannas for masks and trash bags for gowns.\n\nHow is this happening in the United States?\nThe global just-in-time supply chain might be appropriate for blue jeans but does it make sense for vital medical supplies? China\, the first nation to shelter in place because of COVID-19\, produces half of the world’s masks.\n\nRobert Abernathy\, former Chairman & CEO of Halyard Health Inc. – a pharmaceutical and medical products supply company that produces surgical masks and gowns – will unpack this crisis that further complicates the fight against this global pandemic and share thoughts on what a supply chain “fix” would look like.\n\nThis online program is a open to all.

SUMMARY:Financial HOPE in Times of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Operation HOPE has dedicated the past decades to increasing financial literacy among those who are most vulnerable economically. The goal is to lift individuals trapped in poverty through what John Hope Bryant calls “silver rights.”\n\nNow the economy is facing not only a recession\, but a full-blown depression. The spread of the coronavirus is spotlighting the racial and socioeconomic disparities within communities and revealing the deep unequal access to health care. COVID-19 does not discriminate\, but it does affect some much more severely.\n\nAre we really all in this together?\n\nJohn Hope Bryant\, Founder\, Chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE will share his insights on how we can together fight the financial and economic impacts of the pandemic.\n\nThis online program is open to ALL.

SUMMARY:The Benefits of the EB-5 Program During a Downturn Economy
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. economy has seen unemployment increasing at an unprecedented level with 16 million people of new unemployment claims in only three weeks. As a consequence\, consumer confidence and the impact on the financial industry is all but imminent. During periods of crisis U.S. companies find it harder to secure loans\, or capital investors. Dr. Fernandez will be speaking about the benefits of the EB-5 program in a downturn economy. \nPresenter: Dr. Ismael Fernandez \nDr. Fernández\, originally from Madrid\, Spain\, is the founder and president of Greengate Consulting\, an Atlanta based consultancy firm that offers business planning services and advice\, international tax planning\, and marketing services to domestic start-ups and international investors seeking to start their own business in the U.S. Dr. Fernández is heavily involved with the EB-5 program\, a government immigration and investment program that grants the U.S. Residency and a path to Citizenship to those investors that enhance the economic activity of areas in need of employment. \nDr. Fernández\, now recognized by EB-5 Investors Magazine as a Top 5 EB-5 Economist in the country\, started his career in the EB-5 space as a natural extension to his practice in immigration business consulting that began in 2010. Prior to being an independent business consultant\, Ismael was a manager at General Electric\, leading a team of forecasting analysts pacing the production of over $1 billion of spare parts for gas turbine engines worldwide. \nIsmael currently resides in Atlanta\, has three kids\, and dedicates most of his free time to his family. He is passionate about soccer and aviation\, and\, whenever the opportunity arises\, takes advantage of his flying skills to visit EB-5 projects in the region.
