SUMMARY:Global Supply Chains in a Post-Pandemic World: A Conversation With Colombia’s Ambassador on Investment and Reshoring Trends
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual conversation with Colombia’s Ambassador to the United States on investment and reshoring trends and the shakeout of global supply chains in a post-pandemic world: \nSponsored by Emory Executive Education:\n \nWe are only starting to understand the ways the coronavirus pandemic is reshaping our world. On the trade front\, multinationals managing complex supply chains can no longer assume a return to business as usual. Some are eyeing factories in the Americas to shorten lead times and hedge against uncertainty. \nColombia is positioning itself as a key partner for firms considering a move closer to home\, boasting an established free-trade agreement with the U.S.\, healthy manufacturing and ag sectors and nonstop flights to the Southeast U.S. \nJoin Global Atlanta and Emory Executive Education\, in partnership with ProColombia\, for a conversation with Francisco Santos\, Ambassador of Colombia to the United States\, on the country’s advantages (and incentives) for potential investors in various sectors far beyond its traditional commodities like coffee\, flowers and oil. \nDuring a Zoom interview with Global Atlanta Managing Editor Trevor Williams\, Ambassador Santos will highlight opportunities in automotive\, apparel\, fintech and other areas while providing background on the state of the peace process\, the geopolitical environment and the country’s response to COVID-19. \nThe ProColombia team\, which promotes trade\, investment and tourism\, will be on hand to answer specific questions about engaging with Colombia. \nWho should attend: \n\nPurchasing managers seeking diversification\nManufacturing executives\nIndividual traders or sourcing outfits\nEconomic development officials\nLatin America watchers\nInternational affairs students\n\n\nAbout the Ambassador of Colombia to the United States:\n\n\n\n\n\nFrancisco Santos Calderón was born October 14\, 1961 in Bogota; Santos is married to Maria Victoria García and together they have four children: Benjamin\, Gabriel\, Carmen and Pedro. \nHe is the Former Vice President of Colombia (2002-2010) under Alvaro Uribe Velez’s administration. As Vice President of Colombia\, he put in place policies against corruption\, extortion and kidnapping. He led Colombia’s international promotion of trade\, investment and tourism. \nAmbassador Santos ran in the 2015 mayoral race for Bogota on the Democratic Center Party ticket. He promoted democracy and citizen participation in public affairs by the creation of Fundación Confianza Colombia. Santos was also the Democratic Center Party’s head of debate in 2017. \n\n\nBetween 2000 and 2002 he was forced to leave the country\, due to threats from the guerrilla group\, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). He lived in Madrid\, Spain\, for two years where he worked at El País\, the most important spanish newspaper. \nIn 1990 Santos was kidnapped by narcotrafficker Pablo Escobar. After 8 months of captivity he was released and created the world’s first NGO to fight kidnapping. Fundación País Libre promoted the Anti-Kidnapping Statute\, the only law tabled by public petition via signature collection in Colombia. \nIn the 1980’s he held several editorial positions in the major newspaper of Colombia\, El Tiempo\, including night Editor-in-Chief. Santos also taught journalism and international relations at Universidad Central\, Universidad Javeriana and Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano\, among others. \n\n\nSantos completed his studies in the United States at the University of Kansas and at the University of Texas\, earning degrees in Journalism and Latin-American Studies. He was awarded as a Neiman Fellow at Harvard University and won the Paul Harris Medal in 1993\, the highest distinction given by Rotary International. \nThe event is free and open\, though advanced registration is required. You will receive Zoom login information via email upon registration.

SUMMARY:France-Atlanta: Machines of Loving Graces\, Creation and Creativity Between Humans and Machines
DESCRIPTION:  \n#FranceAtlanta2020 | Join us for a conversation between leading experts on artistic creation and collaboration between humans and machines. \n“All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” is a 1967 poem by Richard Brautigan that describes the peaceful and harmonious cohabitation of humans and computers. Fifty years later – following the technological revolutions brought about by the internet\, big data\, cloud computing\, and deep learning – Brautigan’s vision resonates singularly. It compels us to rethink our interactions with machines\, even in regard to the intimate act of artistic creation. In collaboration with its American partners\, France’s Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) invites participants to discover some remarkable examples of possible artistic relationships between humans and computers during two seminars featuring researchers and artists who are building this new deal. \nOct 14: “Working Creatively with Machines”\nParticipants :\n– Carmine Cella (CNMAT – CU Berkeley)\n– Rémy Mignot (IRCAM)\n– Nicolas Obin (Sorbonne Université & IRCAM)\n– Alex Ruthman (New York University)\n– Grace Leslie (Georgia Tech) \nOct 15: “Performances with Machines”\nParticipants:\n– Jérôme Nika and/or Gérard Assayag (IRCAM)\n– Benjamin Levy (IRCAM)\n– Philippe Esling (Sorbonne University & IRCAM)\n– Jason Freeman (Georgia Tech) \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.\n**Stay tuned for the event link. \nThis event is organized by IRCAM – the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music – and the STMS lab (The French National Centre for Scientific Research\, the Ministry of Culture and Sorbonne University)\, in collaboration with Georgia Tech’s School of Music\, NYU Steinhardt – Music Education\, the UC Berkeley Center for New Music and Audio Technologies\, and the Atlanta Office of the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States. \n#FranceAtlanta | Created in 2010 by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and Georgia Tech\, France-Atlanta is a series of events centered on innovation and designed to foster cooperation between France and the U.S. Southeast. \nDiscover this year’s events☞ https://france-atlanta.org
