SUMMARY:Kinoabend: "Good Bye Lenin" Showing
DESCRIPTION:a 2003 German tragicomedy film directed by Wolfgang Becker\, starring Daniel Brühl\, Katrin Sass\, Chulpan Khamatova\, and Maria Simon. Set in the final year of East Germany (GDR)\, the film portrays a family’s personal and emotional journey through the turbulent period surrounding the Peaceful Revolution and German reunification. \n\n\n\nThe story centers on Christiane Kerner (Sass)\, a committed supporter of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED)\, who falls into a coma in October 1989 just before the historic changes that would transform the GDR. When she awakens in mid-1990\, her son Alex (Brühl) goes to great lengths to shield her from the sudden collapse of the socialist state she so deeply believed in\, crafting an elaborate illusion to preserve her idealistic vision of the GDR and to protect her fragile health. \n\n\n\nFilmed largely along Karl-Marx-Allee and in the Plattenbau districts around Alexanderplatz in Berlin\, Good Bye\, Lenin! offers a poignant yet satirical reflection on memory\, identity\, and the socio-political transformation of East Germany. While it gently critiques the state’s limitations\, the film also presents the GDR not merely as a failed system but as a homeland with values\, community life\, and ideals that were abruptly overwritten by the realities of capitalist integration. Its thoughtful balance between humor and emotional depth resonated widely\, earning the film critical acclaim and numerous awards\, including the European Film Award for Best Film and the German Film Award for Best Fiction Film in 2003. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:"Claude McKay: Wandering the World" | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Alliance Française Atlanta and Georgia State University for a screening of the documentary “Claude McKay: Wandering the World”\, directed by Matthieu Verdeil. \n\n\n\nAt the crossroads of Black literary consciousness and political struggle\, Claude McKay helped lay the groundwork for major literary movements\, including Negritude. A politically committed poet with a bohemian spirit\, he moved through New York’s literary circles\, Parisian salons\, Soviet intellectual life\, and Black diasporic communities in places like Marseille\, forging connections with figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Leon Trotsky. Shaped by these global encounters\, McKay developed a radical philosophy that anticipated its time. This film traces his remarkable life across four continents\, exploring early twentieth-century currents of Black pride\, Marxism\, and the Harlem Renaissance through an immersive portrait of the 1920s and 1930s\, visually inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and animated by jazz. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be in French with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nFollowed by a panel moderated by Curt Jackson\, PhD\, from the GSU History Department\, including: \n\n\n\n\nMatthieu Verdeil\, Filmmaker\n\n\n\nEdvige Jean-Francois\, Executive Director of GSU Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora\n\n\n\nRashana Lydner\, Assistant Professor at GSU Africana Studies Department\n\n\n\nDr. Harcourt Fuller\, Associate Professor at GSU History Department\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch Trailer
