SUMMARY:A Luncheon & Discussion On: Nuclear Proliferation and Military Intervention with Iran
DESCRIPTION:The United States government made the decision to wage a military operation against the Islamic Republic of Iran on February 28th of this year. There are now discussions surrounding conflict escalation in a country that has 92 million people\, a land mass greater than California and Texas combined\, and around 1000 pounds of enriched uranium. The current and future foreign policy between the United States and the Middle East is fluid and dynamic. \n\n\n\nDr. Whitlark will discuss these factors and how this conflict may affect arms negotiations in the future in other regions and with other adversaries. \n\n\n\nPlease join for an invigorating discussion on nuclear proliferation in Iran\, and the United States desperate attempt to prevent Iran from getting The Bomb. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRachel WhitlarkAssociate Professor of International Affairs at Georgia Tech \nRachel Whitlark is a political scientist and associate professor of international affairs. Her interests lie within international security and foreign-policy decision making\, specifically including nuclear proliferation\, counter proliferation\, and military intervention.  \n\n\n\nMuch of her work investigates the role of the individual executive in foreign and security policy. Her book\, All Options on the Table: Leaders\, Preventive War\, and Nuclear Proliferation\, published in 2021 by Cornell University Press\, explores the use of preventive military force as a counter-proliferation strategy against adversarial nuclear programs and relies on archival research techniques. Additional projects examine the targeting of nuclear scientists as a counter-proliferation strategy\, the determinants of arms control negotiation success\, and presidential beliefs about nuclear coercion.  \n\n\n\nPrior to coming to Georgia Tech\, Dr. Whitlark held fellowships with the Project on Managing the Atom and International Security Program within the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government\, as well as with the Massachusetts Instate of Technology’s Security Studies Program.  \n\n\n\nDr. Whitlark received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the George Washington University\, holds a Master’s degree from Stanford\, and a B.A. also from George Washington. Professor Whitlark is originally from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:E-Commerce and Local Politics: How Online Business Is Reshaping Civic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech will host a public talk examining how the rise of e-commerce is transforming not just business models\, but also local political engagement. As more entrepreneurs move away from traditional storefronts\, the shift is raising new questions about the relationship between small businesses and civic life. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Andrew Kerner of Michigan State University and Jane L. Sumner of the University of Minnesota\, the discussion will explore how online business. models may weaken the everyday interactions that historically connected business owners to local governance. Drawing on new research and data\, the speakers will examine how the decline of brick-and-mortar businesses affects political participation and collective action. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, the event offers a timely look at how technological change is reshaping both economic and political landscapes at the local level. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

DESCRIPTION:As South Africa navigates domestic security challenges and an increasingly complex international environment\, its evolving relationships with global powers continue to shape ties with the United States. This virtual panel\, hosted by the Foreign Policy Research Institute\, examines the future of United States-South Africa relations following the arrival of Ambassador Brent Bozell. \n\n\n\nBringing together leading experts on African geopolitics and international relations\, the discussion will explore South Africa’s strategic positioning\, its partnerships with major global actors\, and the implications for United States foreign policy. Moderated by Ambassador Charles Ray\, the panel features scholars and analysts offering insight into one of the most dynamic relationships on the African continent. \n\n\n\nThe session provides a timely opportunity to better understand how shifting alliances\, regional dynamics\, and global competition are influencing diplomacy between Washington and Pretoria. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer
