SUMMARY:Circular City: How Atlanta Trades Sustainability Innovations With the World
DESCRIPTION:In an age of climate change and environmental emergency\, it’s trendy to speak of circularity — the concept of product life cycles that completely eliminate waste and pollution.  \n\n\n\nThe reality is much harder to achieve\, and in a free-market economy\, it depends largely on the money-making models underpinning the green innovation. Consumers\, meanwhile\, face the task of figuring out whether companies’ claims are as noble as they sound.  \n\n\n\nAchieving true sustainability\, then\, inevitably involves businesses balancing benefit for the world with profit and productivity\, often via incremental changes that don’t grab headlines or nab awards. \n\n\n\nAtlanta steers clear of big pronouncements on circularity\, but its ample global business connections have led to a cross-border environmental exchange mixing international innovations with local ingenuity.  \n\n\n\nJoin Global Atlanta and Atlanta International School at the school’s new wooded\, riverside Sandy Springs campus for a breakfast meeting with some of the top innovators in our circular city\, learning how their solutions are making a dent in some of the world’s most intractable problems.  \n\n\n\nWho should attend: \n\n\n\n\nBusiness leaders and tech startups\n\n\n\nVenture and impact investors\n\n\n\nConsulate and chamber reps\n\n\n\nProfessional service providers\n\n\n\nNonprofit executives\n\n\n\nEducators looking for industry partnerships\n\n\n\n\nOrganized by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Remarks:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRachel Hovington\, Principal\,AIS Sandy Springs \nRachel Hovington holds a Masters in Educational Leadership in International Education from the University of Bath\, UK\, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from The University of Nottingham\, UK and a Bachelors of Science Degree (Hons.) in Applied and Environmental Geology from the University of Birmingham\, UK. \n\n\n\nShe has served as the vice chair of the Board of the Academy for International School Heads (AISH)\, as well as being a member of the Board of the Association of German International Schools (AGIS) and served on the Board for the Center for The Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) and the Curriculum Advisory Committee for the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Furthermore\, she has led workshops on International Mindedness with Faculty and Staff in schools and locations all over the world as well as having consulted for aspiring IB schools that wish to enhance their international programs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristian Bokich\,Director\, Government Relations and Public Affairs\, SK Battery America \nChristian Bokich has over 25 years of experience working in the auto industry. Having worked for VW\, Audi\, Lincoln\, Mercedes-Benz\, and now SK Battery America\, his wide variety of experience includes brand and product management\, advertising\, accessories & parts\, and communications. Christian joined SK Battery America in Commerce\, GA in October 2024\, and built up the company’s internal communications and culture-building strategy. He also strengthened communications amongst important stakeholders within Jackson County and the State of Georgia.  He lives in the City of Atlanta with his wife Stephanie\, daughter Alessandra who is in 6th grade at AIS\, and a handsome Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Freddy. Last but not least\, Christian is a proud product of Georgia’s Economic Development efforts\, having moved to Atlanta from New York City with Mercedes-Benz USA in June 2015. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Morris\,Founder and CEO\,Emrgy\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRamtin Motahar\,Founder and CEO\,Joulea\nWith bachelor degrees in economics and industrial engineering from Georgia Tech\, Ramtin Motahar has been involved in real estate development from an early age. His background in commercial real estate development\, engineering and construction led him to identify silos in the industry and the lack of an integrated development ecosystem\, resulting in higher energy usage and carbon emissions from commercial buildings. To answer these issues\, he pursued a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech with the goal of creating a novel approach to commercial real estate’s energy use practices. After a couple of years of research and testing\, He founded Joulea\, the built environment’s most accurate energy assessment platform to empower building owners to maximize profitability and minimize carbon footprint. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarlos Walkes\,CEO and Co-founder\, XiQ\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOlivier Brauen\, VP Circularity Business Solutions Development and Transformation Americas\, Michelin\nOlivier Brauen holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL)\, complemented with Master Degree in Business Administration from the IMD Business School. SUMMARY:CIBER GROW Connect - Fireside Chat & Networking
DESCRIPTION:The GROW Connect at Georgia State University is an annual gathering of leading business professionals and academic experts\, fostering a thought-provoking dialogue on the evolving landscape of sustainability\, ethics\, and ESG (Environmental\, Social\, and Governance) in international business. \n\n\n\nThis year\, the symposium will explore the intersection of geopolitics\, corporate sustainability\, and accountability\, examining how businesses navigate ethical challenges\, regulatory shifts\, and global market disruptions. A key objective is to explore how these dynamics influence corporate decision-making and sustainability efforts\, while strengthening collaboration between industry and academia. \n\n\n\nGUEST SPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nANU PIDURU \n\n\n\nAnu Piduru is the Senior Director of Sustainability at Carter’s\, the largest branded marketer in North America of baby and children’s apparel. She leads Carter’s environmental sustainability strategy and also heads the company’s ESG reporting efforts. Over the course of Anu’s nearly 20-year career\, she has amassed sustainability and environmental compliance experience in the aviation and retail industries\, including waste reduction and management and decarbonization. Prior to her role at Carter’s\, she worked in sustainability and environmental compliance for Delta Air Lines for nearly 15 years. She has served her local community as a board member for organizations focused on water resource preservation and landfill diversion. She is currently on the board for Atlanta’s LiveThrive organization\, which owns and operates the Centers for Hard to Recycle Materials\, and she serves on the Executive Committee for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night walk in Atlanta. Anu earned her BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and has been dedicated to the environment from a young age. \n\n\n\nJORDAN SIEGEL \n\n\n\nJordan Siegel is a Professor of Strategy at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Professor Siegel is also a Research Fellow at the William Davidson Institute and an Associate-in-Research at the Harvard Korea Institute of the Harvard Asia Center. \n\n\n\nProfessor Siegel specializes in the study of how companies gain competitive advantage through their global strategy. Professor Siegel finds that there are numerous opportunities for companies to attain superior sustainable corporate performance through creative strategies for corporate governance and human resource management. \n\n\n\nA set of studies written by Professor Siegel explores how companies borrow\, leverage\, and arbitrage institutions across borders as a means of attaining long-term competitive advantage. By institutions Professor Siegel refers to the formal and informal rules of the game that affect companies’ competitive behavior and resource access. Formal institutions include corporate\, securities\, and bankruptcy law; informal institutions include a society’s cultural stance toward meritocracy and egalitarianism. (While a thorough list of rules of the game might be near-infinite\, Professor Siegel concentrates on those that directly affect governance of companies.) The main idea is that companies—even single-country-focused companies—exhibit a surprising ability to attain competitive advantage via their choices of other countries’ institutions. \n\n\n\nAnother set of studies written by Professor Siegel and his coauthors shows that companies can make their approach to the labor market a core component of their competitive advantage. The goal has been to examine whether the hiring and promotion of female managers leads to improved corporate performance\, whether foreign multinationals disproportionately engage in the hiring and promotion of female managers\, and whether foreign multinationals act differently in the hiring and promotion of senior female managers in Japan and South Korea compared to what they do at home. Overall\, the results show that foreign multinationals have been the most active in both Japan and South Korea in exploiting the social bias and hiring and promoting women to senior management positions. Professor Siegel and his coauthors argue based on panel analysis with company fixed effects\, and based on systematically ruling out alternative explanations\, that the aggressive application of this outsider’s advantage has led to demonstrable improvements in performance over time for foreign multinationals in Japan and South Korea. Moreover\, this source of competitive advantage is not short-lived\, but appears to be as much as a decade-long opportunity. \n\n\n\nProfessor Siegel’s work has been published in Management Science\, Administrative Science Quarterly\, the Strategic Management Journal\, Organization Science\, the Journal of Financial Economics\, the Review of Financial Studies\, the Journal of Comparative Economics\, and the Journal of Economic Literature. \n\n\n\nSEBASTIAN VAN DER VEGT \n\n\n\nSebastian Van Der Vegt is a global strategist and founding partner at WMBV Consulting\, with over two decades of experience helping organizations expand across international markets. A former Coca-Cola executive and United Nations professional\, he has led award-winning initiatives in sustainability\, corporate communications\, and brand strategy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:French in Higher Education: A Regional Seminar for Growth and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the annual France-Atlanta series organized by Georgia Tech and the Embassy of France in the United States. \n\n\n\nVilla Albertine\, in partnership with Georgia Tech’s French program in the School of Modern Languages\, welcomes you to a France-Atlanta seminar\, French in Higher Education: A Regional Seminar for Growth and Sustainability. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the French Embassy in the United States and Villa Albertine initiative for French in Higher Education. The initiative aims to support and foster innovation in French and Francophone studies across U.S. universities\, with a particular focus on addressing the critical challenge of increasing student enrollment. \n\n\n\nIn today’s globalized world\, understanding diverse communities\, excelling in international business\, and addressing global challenges are more important than ever. Language education is a key component of a well-rounded academic experience\, and learning French opens doors to a deeper appreciation of Francophone cultures\, histories\, and perspectives. Recruiting more students into French programs is thus essential to ensuring their sustainability and growth. Engaging with the cultural dimensions of the language not only enhances linguistic proficiency but also fosters cross-cultural understanding and empathy — essential skills in our interconnected world. \n\n\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas\, collaborate on new initiatives\, and contribute to a global conversation about making French programs more dynamic\, resilient\, and relevant. Key topics will include effective communication with administration\, creating engaging study abroad programs\, implementing new teaching methodologies to connect with a diverse student body\, overcoming recruitment challenges\, strategies to attract students to French programs\, integrating digital tools and resources\, building interdisciplinary connections\, and creating professional pathways that link language learning with career opportunities. \n\n\n\nBy the end of this seminar\, participants will have identified strategies and best practices to maintain and attract new students. \n\n\n\nThis regional seminar is open to all French teachers and department heads from universities in Alabama\, Georgia\, Mississippi\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Cleantech Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s annual consumption of resources currently far exceeds the planet’s capacity to regenerate itself sustainably. To preserve the environment for generations to come and to address the challenge of global food security\, it is vital that we shift to cleaner technologies. While efforts in various countries are underway\, global collaboration on cleantech innovation is critical to achieving environmental objectives such as water conservation\, sustainable agricultural practices\, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The ever-growing environmental protection challenges can only be met if the international community works together and coordinates its efforts. \nWith the aim of creating a dialogue and accelerating the sharing of solutions around major environmental challenges across the Atlantic\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, the Swiss Business Hub USA in Atlanta\, and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia (UGA) are partnering to host the 2nd annual Cleantech Symposium. Focused on technologies related to controlled environment agriculture\, urban agriculture and sustainable water management\, the symposium will showcase innovative cleantech solutions from Switzerland and Georgia to make our societies resolutely more sustainable. For Switzerland\, the symposium presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate the vibrancy of its sustainability industry. UGA looks forward to hosting this event as a way to engage with a bustling\, international sustainability industry\, displaying its own research and outreach activities in the area of clean technologies through a poster competition\, and exposing faculty and students to fresh ideas and new possibilities. The Cleantech Symposium is organized with support from the Georgia Center of Innovation. \nOn April 19\, join entrepreneurs and scientists from both Switzerland and the state of Georgia to gain exclusive insights on clean technologies that can effectively address today’s challenges!
