SUMMARY:ACIR Presents: Charles Shapiro Former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:“Venezuela: From Bad to Worse” (Luncheon and Discussion) \nACIR is honored to host Ambassador Charles Shapiro\, President of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta and former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela\, who will speak on the topic\, “Venezuela: From Bad to Worse.” \nIn a sham election in May 2018\, Nicolas Maduro manufactured a “victory” to give himself another six-year term in office. Mainstream opposition parties boycotted the election. Except for Russia\, Syria\, and Cuba\, the international community denounced the election as fraudulent. The 14-nation Lima Group of Latin American countries plus Canada issued a statement saying it did not recognize the legitimacy of Venezuela’s presidential election.   \nReynaldo Trombetta reported in The Guardian that “we are not dealing with an authoritarian government that\, like Chavez’s\, still managed to loosely color between the lines of democracy and the rule of law. This is a textbook dictatorship\, with assassinations\, torture and sexual abuse of political prisoners\, violent censorship of the press\, and a sociopathic strategy to use the hunger of its own citizens as a tool for political control.” \nToday Venezuela is in political turmoil. Its economy has collapsed and four million Venezuelans have fled the country in the past two years. As Venezuela goes from bad to worse\, the question is what will the international democratic community do to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and hasten the return of democracy? \nCome listen to Charles Shapiro discuss Venezuela’s recent past and probable future as it affects U.S. policy toward Venezuela and the broader Latin American region.

SUMMARY:Luncheon Honoring the 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:To recognize the accomplishments of these gifted leaders\, the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presents the first annual “50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia.” The nominations of the men and women selected for this prestigious honor have gone through a rigorous process to evaluate contributions they have made. Weighing heavily on the final selection was the degree of influence each person exhibited in their role as a representative of the Latino community. It is one thing to be successful but quite another to ensure others are successful as well. For that positive influence\, the GHCC is thankful and is delighted to recognize the “50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia” for 2018. Come celebrate  the month of Hispanic Heritage recognizing Latinos who are examples for our community.

SUMMARY:Atlanta Ballet: Return to Fall
DESCRIPTION:Return to a Strange Land \nAtlanta Ballet returns with a fall lineup that includes one of dance visionary Jiří Kylián’s signature celebrations of dancers’ physical limits\, Return to a Strange Land. Sinewy forms entwine in intimate embraces before spiraling across the stage in graceful lifts. They are physical bodies in space detached from place and time – travelers in a strange land. They move as counterpoints\, exploring the limits of centrifugal force and\, seemingly\, gravity. \nThis selection of works will include the Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote as well as Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux staged by Balanchine* protégé and beloved Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director Emeritus\, Robert Barnett. \nAs part of a new transatlantic partnership with Czech National Ballet\, Atlanta Ballet will present a special guest performance this September. Witness the powerful emotional metamorphosis of the artists through sensual\, off-kilter partnering in this in this highly stylized work by Mauro Bigonzetti.

SUMMARY:Year of Morocco: The Case of the Ben M'Sik Community Museum
DESCRIPTION:Partnering With a Moroccan University: The Case of the Ben M’Sik Community Museum \nThe Ben M’sik Community Museum (BMCM) is a burgeoning museum housed at Faculty of Letters and Humanities\, Ben M’sik\, Casablanca\, Morocco\, located at the heart of the diverse Ben M’sik neighborhood of Casablanca. The decision to create the Ben M’sik Community Museum\, the first of its kind in Morocco\, is an indication of its commitment to establish deeper contacts with the community it serves. The BMCM’s mission “to preserve memory by interpreting\, exhibiting\, and promoting the stories of the diverse populations of the neighborhood and its region” supports the University’s own mission of increasing the number of interactions with partners belonging to its socio-economic environment. \nOf the less than 20 museums in Morocco\, the BMCM is one of two located in Casablanca. The BMCM is unique in its focus as a center of community engagement. Unlike traditional museums that primarily collect and display antiquities and great works of art\, the BMCM specifically seeks to document the day-to-day lives of local residents. \nFeaturing: Dr. Catherine Lewis\, Assistant Vice President for Museums\, Archives and Rare Books\, KSU

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Mozart's 'Don Giovanni'
DESCRIPTION:“A Note on Opera” resumes with what’s often acclaimed as the greatest opera ever written\, “Don Giovanni.” Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte transform a stock character from Spanish morality plays into a flawed\, contemptible\, yet tragic figure. There are so many different ways to interpret the Don that no truly definitive portrayal will ever be realized. Mozart and da Ponte described “Don Giovanni” not as a “dramma per musica\,” as would have been the norm\, but rather with the more cryptic “dramma giocoso\,” or “playful drama.” “Don Giovanni” isn’t strictly serious\, but neither is it to be taken too lightly.
