SUMMARY:Spruill Center For The Arts Presents Homecoming By Ilona Cutts
DESCRIPTION:Finnish-born artist\, Ilona Cutts exhibits her new series of paintings\, HOMECOMING. Having spent much of her life as a nomad\, moving from country to country\, Cutts has been searching for Home most of her life. She has the eye of a wanderer\, like a plant without roots. It is this rootlessness that has formed her artistic style where a myriad of cultures can be seen in her fantastical figures and dreamlike landscapes. After recently becoming a US Citizen\, Cutts has begun to put down roots and discover the elusive feeling of Home. In her new body of work\, HOMECOMING\, Cutts explores this idea of Home and what it means to her and others. \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday\, January 20\, 6-9 pm\nARTIST TALK: Saturday\, February 5\, 2 pm \nAbout the Artist\nIlona Cutts \nIlona Cutts (born Sampovaara) studied Fine Arts at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. In 1995 she received her BFA in painting from Kankaanpää Art College\, in Finland. Ilona’s paintings have been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group Shows. She has exhibited in Finland\, Mexico\, the USA\, France and Spain. Her work can be found in important collections such as the Oulu Museum of Modern Art in Oulu\, Finland. Her latest group show in Finland was at SINKKA\, Contemporary Art Museum of Kerava in Finland\, and participated in 2 group shows at Stone Sparrow Gallery in New York City in 2020. \nBorn to a diplomatic family\, her family continuously moved from country to country since her birth in 1972. She lived in Argentina\, Poland\, the U.K\, Mexico and Spain. She spent 21yrs in Mexico which deeply impacted her being and the art she makes. \nAs her family was continually moving from country to country as a child\, Ilona often felt alone as she had to say goodbye to her friends. So as not to feel lonely she began drawing at a very early age and found solice in the creatures she painted. \nIlona and her Mother have a very special bond. Her Mother collected Art and antiques and encouraged Ilona to see beauty all around observing nature and animals. Surrounded by art and antiques Ilona had the chance to observe and study art in many forms. Her Mother crossed over to the Other Side in 2016\, their special bond continues. \nIlona’s paintings center on anthropomorphic creatures or girl like figures\, surrounded by nature or objects of obscure symbolic and ethereal meaning. Her narrative storytelling is both cute and cruel\, at times disclosing her own personal views on the delicate relationship between man and spirit nature. \nCurrently Ilona is working on a new body of work for upcoming exhibitions\, she also teaches oil painting and mentors other artists who are interested in pursuing a career in painting. \nIlona moved to the US in 2016. She and her husband John\, their Shar-Pei\, Liisa Lightray and their cat\, Frida Katlo all live in Atlanta in a romantic white house. \nDaily Parking\nThe parking entrance is located on Meadow Lane. Turn right after entering the complex. Marked parking spots are located on the right\, near the gallery’s garden. Spaces on the left are first come first serve. Overflow parking is available on terraced levels below the gallery. \nContact gallery@spruillarts.org with inquiries.

SUMMARY:Is the European Union Disunited By Diversity?
DESCRIPTION:The European Union appears at a crossroads\, struggling with its identity. Outwardly\, a monolithic giant to be dealt with. Inwardly\, at war with itself. Where is it going? \nSpeaker: Dr. Alasdair Young\, Professor & Neal Family Chair\, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\, Georgia Tech University \nSpeaker\n \nDr. Alasdair Young\, Professor & Neal Family Chair\, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\, Georgia Tech University \nAlasdair Young is Professor and Neal Family Chair. He co-directs the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies\, a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence\, and the Center for International Strategy\, Technology\, and Policy. He held a Jean Monnet Chair (2012-15) and received the Ivan Allen College’s Distinguished Researcher Award in 2015. Beyond Georgia Tech\, he is co-editor of JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies and was chair of the European Union Studies Association (USA) (2015-17). Before joining Georgia Tech in 2011 he taught at the University of Glasgow in the UK for 10 years. Prior to that\, he held research posts at the European University Institute in Florence\, Italy\, and the University of Sussex\, outside Brighton in the UK. \nAlasdair has written five books\, including Supplying Compliance with Trade Rules: Explaining the EU’s Responses to Adverse WTO Rulings (Oxford University Press\, 2021). He has edited 15 other volumes\, including the eighth edition of Policy-Making in the European Union with Mark Pollack\, Christilla Roederer-Rynning\, and Helen Wallace (Oxford University Press\, 2020). He has published almost a score of refereed journal articles — including in Global Environmental Politics\, the Journal of Common Market Studies\, the Journal of European Public Policy\, the Review of International Political Economy\, and World Politics — and written more than 40 book chapters. He has performed consultancy work for the US and UK governments and for the European Commission. \nAbout the European Union\nThe European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political union between 27 European countries. The predecessor of the EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries that trade with one another become economically interdependent and so more likely to avoid conflict. The result was the European Economic Community\, created in 1958 with the initial aim of increasing economic cooperation between six countries: Belgium\, Germany\, France\, Italy\, Luxembourg\, and the Netherlands. \nSince then\, 22 more countries joined (and the United Kingdom left the EU in 2020) and a huge single market has been created and continues to develop towards its full potential. What began as a purely economic union has evolved into an organization spanning many different policy areas\, from climate\, environment\, and health to external relations and security\, justice\, and migration. \nCancellation Policy: If you need to cancel\, please do so no later than 48 hours before the event. ACIR is charged for your meal\, so no refund can be provided after that.

SUMMARY:2016 Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series - Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change \nSpeaker: Dr. Nate Nibbelink \nIn the past few years\, the American public has become more aware of the damage wrought by climate change. From droughts in the west to extreme weather in the wast\, a rapidly changing climate has already made its footprint in the United States. Now\, it’s expected that the presidential election in 2016 will be one of the first ever to place an emphasis on these environmental changes. What can the next president do to stymie this environmental crisis? And is it too late for these efforts to be effective?

SUMMARY:Latin American Crossroads Series: Beyond the Border: Mexico on Its Own Terms
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to President Donald Trump\, Mexico is back in the national dialogue like no time in the past two decades\, but his newfound focus on our neighbor to the south has once again failed to get past the context of competition. \nWhat if we went beyond the border\, past the wrangling over NAFTA\, the Wall and the War on Drugs\, and took a closer look at Mexico’s deep history\, storied culture and growing market? Would we find room to work together on a more equitable and respectful basis? Would Georgia-based companies uncover overlooked opportunities right under their noses? \nGlobal Atlanta will explore these questions and more in Beyond Borders: Mexico on Its Terms\, the second event in the Latin American Crossroads series exploring Atlanta as a hub for the hemisphere. \nProposed topics include: \n\nUpdate on NAFTA negotiations from Javier Diaz de Leon\, consul general of Mexico in Atlanta\nDeepening partnership: Delta’s joint venture with Aeromexico\nCoca-Cola’s exploration into the creative heart of Mexico City through The BRIDGE\nGlobal Atlanta’s reporting on collaboration and competition in aerospace and automotive\nWISE Foods — how being bought by a Mexican company has expanded its capabilities\n\nSpeakers and event location will be confirmed and announced shortly. Those who register will be notified.

SUMMARY:The Ramayana in Art
DESCRIPTION:In the 17th and 18th centuries\, artists produced gloriously illustrated Ramayanas for both Hindu and Muslim rulers. In a lecture titled Beyond Hindu and Muslim: The Courtly Ramayanas of North India\, Debra Diamond\, curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery\, compares four illustrated Ramayanas and explores the diverse meanings of the epic during this period. She will consider how Sanskrit\, Persian\, and Hindi Ramayana manuscripts variously inflected the epic narrative\, and what they reveal about the mechanisms though which a shared Indo-Islamic elite culture was forged. \nThis lecture will be held in Ackerman Hall on Level Three of the Carlos Museum. It is free and open to the Emory community and the public

SUMMARY:Reflecting America in the U.S. Foreign Service
DESCRIPTION:The U.S Department of State is struggling to reflect the country it represents. In 2020\, only 57 percent of Americans identified as “white only.” That same year\, a Government Accountability Office report found that women and racial minorities working in the State Department were nearly 30 percent less likely to be promoted than their white counterparts.\n\n“There’s no one way to define diversity\,” said Ambassador (Ret.) Harry K. Thomas Jr. who introduced innovative recruiting programs during his tenure as Director General of the Foreign Service. “Diversity across organizations like the State Department\, USAID and the Peace Corps makes the United States much stronger overseas.”\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, February 10\, 2022\, as we sit down with Ambassador Thomas for a candid conversation on how fostering diversity and inclusion will strengthen the State Department and\, as a result\, U.S. foreign policy at large.

Now\, celebrated actor\, Anthony Skordi\, brings this larger-than-life persona to the stage in his one-man production of Onassis. Aristotle Onassis’ life has been referred to as both a storybook existence\, as well as a Greek tragedy. Skordi has exhaustedly researched the man who entertained everyone from business tycoons and royalty to the icons of stage and screen\, as well as Presidents… and their wives\, to offer a glimpse into the opulent world of the man who made and lived by his own rules as he went along. The billionaire faced scandals\, deaths and what many would call the ‘Onassis Curse.’ \nVeteran Greek-British actor Anthony Skordi will embody the role of Aristotle Onassis. \nAbout Anthony Skordi \nThe talented actor Anthony Skordi was born in London\, England\, to Greek-Cypriot parents. He attended Drama Centre in London\, was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a member of Vanessa Redgrave’s Moving Theatre Company. He has voiced many video games\, promos\, and trailers and has appeared as series regular on several TV series in Europe\, including in the UK and Greece\, and continues working both in the U.S. and Europe. Among his television roles as series regular\, Skordi played Silas Manatos in Prime Suspect\, and in the U.S. he featured in episodes of popular series such as Scorpion\, The Blacklist\, and The Last Ship.
