DESCRIPTION:The African Film Festival Atlanta (AFFATL)\, powered by the African Film & Arts Foundation Inc. The September screenings will be held at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture & History. \n\n\n\nOctober screenings\, through a partnership with The Big Idea Summit and Activate North Fulton\, presented by Commissioner Gene Andrews\, to bring you the best of African cinema\, will be held at the Studio Movie Grill\, North Point Parkway\, Alpharetta\, GA. \n\n\n\nThe opening film\, Dent pour Dent\, which will be screened on the 22nd of September 2023 @ 6:00 pm\, delves into the world of Idrissa\, a resident of Dakar\, Senegal\, living in the suburbs. His life takes an unexpected turn due to budgetary restrictions imposed by the IMF during Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s leadership\, resulting in the loss of his civil servant job. \n\n\n\nThe centerpiece film sets the stage with a compelling narrative\, shedding light on Geneviéve Makaping’s life in Italy and her harrowing migration journey. The film Maka will be screened on the 23rd of September\, 2023 @ 3:50 pm. \n\n\n\nThe closing night film\, Journey of the Marimba\, is a culmination of an epic journey across three continents\, where we explore the profound history of an enigmatic musical instrument that traveled with enslaved people from Africa to America over 400 years ago. Consul General Sultan-Dadon joined the Israeli diplomatic corps in 2004 and has held various positions at the Embassies of Israel in Cameroon\, Germany\, the Netherlands and Australia.  \n\n\n\n\nAt the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem\, Sultan-Dadon has held positions in the Euro-Asia and the Asia-Pacific Divisions. Sultan-Dadon earned a B.A. in Psychology and Education from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1999 and continued at the University toearn her M.A. in Criminology with high honors.  \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, Sultan-Dadon was honored by Morehouse College with induction into the Martin Luther KingJr. International College of Ministers and Laity. In her current role in Atlanta\, Sultan-Dadon is responsible for advancing all aspects of the bilateral relations between Israel and the seven states covered by the Consulate General of Israel to the Southeast: Alabama\, Georgia\, Kentucky\, Mississippi\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee. This 3-day educational and cultural arts experience\, curated by artist Assane Kouyaté\, uncovers ngueweul (griot) traditions exclusive to Wolof and Serer heritage and diverse ethnic groups of Senegal / the Senegambia region. Griot tradition is revered and passed down through generations in specific family lines. Kouyaté assembles a masterful team of US-based indigenous Senegalese artists to help preserve and enhance the traditional experience. \n\n\n\nThe conference is unique due to its focus on SABAR rather than djembe art forms. The term sabar has multiple meanings – referring to the dance style\, the family of drums played with one hand and a stick\, as well as the communal event that draws individuals to extemporize with live rhythms. SUMMARY:Sage: Performances with Senegalese Artist in Residence Kaolack (Pape Ibrahima Ndiaye)
DESCRIPTION:Kaolack (Pape Ibrahima Ndiaye) is a contemporary Senegalese dance artist with a substantial history as a performer\, choreographer\, and teacher. He trained with and performed in Senegal’s premier contemporary African dance company Jant Bi\, directed by the “mother of contemporary African dance” Germaine Acogny. He also performed with contemporary dance luminary nora chipaumire (who hails from Zimbabwe and has performed and created work internationally for decades). Kaolack is currently completing his MFA at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, and has created works with undergraduate students across the U.S.  Kaolack’s approach to contemporary concert dance brings an innovative and important new perspective to KSU’s dance department.  \n\n\n\nThe KSU community will be able to enjoy the results of Kaolack’s original choreography\, created with KSU students over four weeks while he serves as an artist in residence.  Dance assistant professor Dasha Chapman oversees this collaboratory experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
