SUMMARY:Otto Neumann: Selections from the Rothschild Collection
DESCRIPTION:Oglethorpe University Museum of Art’s new exhibit opens on September 23 and presents more than 100 drawings\, watercolors\, and prints by German artist Otto Neumann. Neumann\, a Gentile who refused to divorce his Jewish wife\, Hilde Rothschild\, lived with the constant strain of the political climate in Nazi Germany. During this period of oppression\, Neumann drew strength from his love of family\, literature\, and art. Inspired by Gustav Doré’s illustrations\, Neumann illustrated Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy\, creating iterations of sketches and prints of the various cantos. He created interpretive studies of classical mythology and Biblical stories. Much of Neumann’s work speaks of conflict\, duress\, and crises. Introspective self-portraits\, drawings\, and paintings of his wife and daughter are also on view and show a closely bonded family under strain. This exhibition gives a unique window into the life of a reserved man with a revolutionary spirit.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Jules Massenet's "Werther"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Goethe-Zentrum for our latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as we look at Jules Massenet’s “Werther.“\nNot only has Goethe’s “Faust” inspired different opera adaptations\, but so have many of his other works. His intensely Romantic novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers [The Sorrows of young Werther] is the basis for this opera by French composer Jules Massenet. Not only is “Werther” considered Massenet’s masterpiece\, it also is quite faithful to Goethe’s novel. It’s an intimate work with the tragedy of unrequited love leading to suicide played out in a world unaware and uncaring. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required.

SUMMARY:Telenovelas\, a Looking Glass into Media\, Culture\, and Society in the Americas
DESCRIPTION:There are stories that are addictive. In particular\, there are some that constitute a pandemic transmitted daily via the television screens of more than 130 countries. These serialized dramas are called telenovelas. The simplicity of their codes belies the complexity of their production\, consumption and regulation\, and their potential to convey information and elicit reflection in their audiences. Furthermore\, the engagement of these melodramas with reality\, makes them ideal sites to study the links between media\, culture and society. \nDr. Carolina Acosta-Alzuru is Associate Professor in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Her scholarship focuses on the links between media\, culture and society\, and bridges the disciplines of cultural studies and international media studies as she examines media texts\, their production and reception. She is the author of the books Venezuela es una Telenovela (2007)\, La Incandescencia de las Cosas: Conversaciones con Leonardo Padrón (2013) and Telenovela Adentro (2015). Carolina encompasses wisdom\, knowledge and sensibility not only about her subject but also of Latin American societies\, in particular her native Venezuela\, and she will be casting light on how the telenovela genre and society mirror and reveal one another. Please join us in this enriching and delightful talk! \nLight refreshments will be served. Please plan on arriving by 6:15 pm for networking and refreshments!\nParking: \nParking deck underneath our building is accessible from 14th\, 15th and Peachtree Streets. Please park on RED or GOLD levels in the Colony Square parking garage below the building and bring parking ticket for validation at the Cultural Centers.

SUMMARY:Inaugural Global Leaders Lecture Featuring Colombia's Ambassador to the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Emory Law welcomes Ambassador of Colombia H.E. Juan Carlos Pinzón\, ambassador to the United States\, as the speaker for its inaugural Global Leaders Lecture. The event\, hosted by the International Humanitarian Law Clinic\, will be held in Hunter Atrium in Gambrell Hall\, 1301 Clifton Road\, Atlanta\, on October 13 at 12:30 p.m. \nAmbassador Pinzón\, who previously served as Minister of Defense of Colombia for nearly four years\, will speak on “Colombia’s Historic Moment” as part of the new lecture series. Professor Laurie Blank\, director of the International Humanitarian Law Clinic\, said of the talk\, “We are extraordinarily fortunate to have Ambassador Pinzón deliver the inaugural Global Leaders Lecture at Emory University School of Law at the very moment that Colombia is poised at a remarkable turning point in its history\, moving towards peace and the consolidation of justice and the rule of law after more than 50 years of civil war.  This is an unparalleled chance for our students\, faculty and the broader Emory community to hear about how the very issues we teach and discuss in the classroom are being grappled with and implemented on the ground in real time.” \nThe Global Leaders Lecture Series brings national and international leaders from multiple sectors—government\, military\, policy\, international organizations\, and advocacy and civil society—to Emory to discuss cutting-edge issues of national and international security with Emory students\, faculty and the broader Emory community. The inaugural lecture is being presented in collaboration with The Carter Center. \nRSVP is not required\, but is encouraged for planning purposes.
