SUMMARY:How Long will ISIS Last Economically? - Lunch & Discussion with Eckart Woertz
DESCRIPTION:The Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS) is not a mere terror organization. It wants to be a “state.” As such it needs money\, but its economy is unsustainable. The talk gives an overview of ISIS funding sources such as oil\, looting\, ransom\, foreign donations\, agriculture and various forms of taxation. It analyzes what can be done by Europe and the U.S. to hurt the organization economically. \nEckart Woertz is senior research fellow at CIDOB\, the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs\, scientific advisor to the Kuwait Chair at Sciences Po in Paris and teaches at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI). Formerly he was a visiting fellow at Princeton University\, director of economic studies at the Gulf Research Center in Dubai and worked for banks in Germany and the United Arab Emirates. He is author of Oil for Food (Oxford University Press 2013) and has published numerous journal articles on development issues in the Middle East. He is on the editorial boards of Food Security and the Journal of Arabian Studies and holds a PhD in economics from Friedrich-Alexander University\, Erlangen-Nuremberg.

With a heart for service and her country\, Valenzuela Diaz was a member of the representation of El Salvador to the International Court of Justice in 2002 and a member of the El Salvador defense team in lawsuits against the State to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court on Human Rights from 2005 to 2007. \nShe held the position of Minister Counselor and Legal Advisor to the Permanent Mission of El Salvador to the United Nations from 2007 to 2011 and was an advisor to the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations from 2008 to 2009. She was in charge of negotiating the position of El Salvador to the Judicial Forums at the United Nations from 2007 to 2011. Valenzuela Diaz was Consul of El Salvador from 2011 to 2012 and has served as Consul General of El Salvador since 2012. Proclaim Outstanding Georgia citizen by the Secretary of State of the State of Georgia in 2014\, she is proud to serve the El Salvadoran and broader hispanic communities in Atlanta.

DESCRIPTION:Mobility Worldwide will share plans to expand into the Atlanta market to build wheelchair carts for those injured by landmines or unable to walk due to disease or injury. Plans were shared with Liberia’s Vice President recently when he extended an invitation to Mobility Worldwide to visit Liberia to further explore growth opportunities there. Over 60\,000 Mobility Carts have been given to people in need in the developing world since Mobility Worldwide’s founding in 1994. With the addition of an Atlanta operation and a strengthened relationship with Liberia\, production will increase significantly to help the 70 million people worldwide who need wheelchairs (according to the World Health Organization).

He leads a team which works throughout the southeast United States to promote UK-US trade and investment\, support British nationals\, conduct public diplomacy on key issues\, and build scientific co-operation. He also sits on the Marshall Scholarship selection committee. \nJeremy’s previous posting was in London where he was the Head of the UK Foreign Office’s Caribbean\, Central America and Mexico Department. In this role he helped to re-invigorate UK relations with Latin America and the Caribbean\, pushed for greater trade links and supported joint efforts to combat drugs and crime within the region. Prior to this Jeremy worked in the Foreign Office’s planning staff on supporting democratic reform in Ukraine after the 2004 Orange Revolution. \nJeremy joined the UK’s diplomatic service in 1990 as a graduate entrant. He has served overseas in Qatar\, Singapore\, Russia and Malaysia. \nJeremy was born in Sevenoaks in Kent\, England. He graduated in politics\, history and economics from Brunel University in London. During his time there he participated in a one-year exchange programme with the State University of New York and worked as an intern for a US congressman.
