SUMMARY:Atlanta Ballet: Return to Fall
DESCRIPTION:Return to a Strange Land \nAtlanta Ballet returns with a fall lineup that includes one of dance visionary Jiří Kylián’s signature celebrations of dancers’ physical limits\, Return to a Strange Land. Sinewy forms entwine in intimate embraces before spiraling across the stage in graceful lifts. They are physical bodies in space detached from place and time – travelers in a strange land. They move as counterpoints\, exploring the limits of centrifugal force and\, seemingly\, gravity. \nThis selection of works will include the Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote as well as Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux staged by Balanchine* protégé and beloved Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director Emeritus\, Robert Barnett. \nAs part of a new transatlantic partnership with Czech National Ballet\, Atlanta Ballet will present a special guest performance this September. Witness the powerful emotional metamorphosis of the artists through sensual\, off-kilter partnering in this in this highly stylized work by Mauro Bigonzetti.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Mozart's 'Don Giovanni'
DESCRIPTION:“A Note on Opera” resumes with what’s often acclaimed as the greatest opera ever written\, “Don Giovanni.” Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte transform a stock character from Spanish morality plays into a flawed\, contemptible\, yet tragic figure. There are so many different ways to interpret the Don that no truly definitive portrayal will ever be realized. Mozart and da Ponte described “Don Giovanni” not as a “dramma per musica\,” as would have been the norm\, but rather with the more cryptic “dramma giocoso\,” or “playful drama.” “Don Giovanni” isn’t strictly serious\, but neither is it to be taken too lightly.

SUMMARY:Breakfast Meeting: Impact of 3D-printing and Automation
DESCRIPTION:Are Robots and 3D Printing Really Going to Take Over the World?\n\nWe have all heard of the huge warehouses of delivery services like Amazon\, and the robots performing car assembly jobs that were once held by humans.  But how far could this really go?  The knock-on effects for the global workforce could be huge and we have already seen manufacturing jobs change as automation and 3D-printing replaces humans in many areas.  Are staffing companies and governments really braced for the impact?\n\nSuman Das is an expert on the role of 3D-printing and automation on commerce. As a researcher and  Chair Professor of Advanced Manufacturing Systems\, he has conducted research in these fields for over 28 years. He is currently on a leave of absence from Georgia Tech to serve as the CEO of Atlanta-based DDM Systems\, a high-end technology company founded by him in 2012 to commercialize advanced 3D printing technologies for aerospace\, power generation\, automotive\, and medical sectors.\n\nThis is a must-attend for HR and operations managers.

SUMMARY:Uneven Urbanization in China: Causes and Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago\, China was “under urbanized’; less than 20% of the population lived in towns or cites and that percentage had not shifted for many decades. Today the majority of Chinese citizens live and work in urban settlements and China has more than 160 cities with a population of over one million. Market forces have fueled rapid urbanization but equally decisive has been a radical extension of city boundaries. As a result\, urban “spaces” have expanded twice as fast as the urban population. Moreover\, while half of the new urbanites are migrants who left their villages to seek their fortune in the cities\, half are in-situ urbanites where the “city came to them.”  In this lecture\, Deborah Davis first summarizes the macro-level shifts between 1980 and 2015 and then draws on current research to discuss multiple dimensions of “uneven urbanization.” \nDeborah Davis is Professor Emerita of Sociology at Yale University and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fudan University in Shanghai as well as on the faculty at the Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University.  At Yale she served as Director of Academic Programs at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization\, Chair of the Department of Sociology\, Chair of the Council of East Asian Studies\, and co-chair of the Women Faculty Forum. Her past publications have analyzed the politics of the Cultural Revolution\, Chinese family life\, social welfare policy\, consumer culture\, property rights\, social stratification\, occupational mobility\, and impact of rapid urbanization and migration on health and happiness.

SUMMARY:Brazil Inbound Trade Mission
DESCRIPTION:Join GDEcD and SUSTA for pre-arranged one-on-one meetings with key buyers\, importers\, distributors and brokers from Brazil\, South Africa and Taiwan. This event is held in conjunction with the Americas Food and Beverage Show. \nBrazil is one of the leading economies in Latin America and in the world (7thlargest). Previous stages of economic growth and development have allowed for the expansion of its middle class. Approximately more than 40% of Brazil’s population is considered middle class and about 16 million are high-end consumers. Brazil is divided into five regions and the Southeastern region is the wealthiest one (including Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro among other cities)\, 55% of the country’s GDP concentrates in this region. \nAs Brazilians change their tastes and consumption habits\, this opens up new opportunities for US suppliers. In addition\, the trade relationship with Brazil is improving. For example\, US beef exports are back in Brazil after a 13 year long absence. Exchange rates between the Brazilian Real and the USD are improving from 2016\, in other words the dollar is not as strong compared to the Real\, a favorable condition when it comes to consumers’ price sensitivity. Register with SUSTA for the Inbound Trade Mission and connect with select Brazilian buyers. \nIndustry Focus\nIngredient\, Natural/Health\, Pet Food and Products\, Retail Products
