SUMMARY:Transforming the Triangle: Georgia's Role in Central American Migration and Prosperity
DESCRIPTION:With immigration from Mexico on the decline\, the debate around policy has begun to focus on the “Northern Triangle” countries in Central America: Honduras\, El Salvador and Guatemala.  \nTreatment of migrant caravans at the border\, particularly asylum-seeking families with children\, became a source of public discord during the Trump administration. With the coronavirus pandemic on the decline and a new president in office people are heading northward again\, and apprehensions are on the rise.    \nMost analysts agree that stemming this flow will require strengthening the economies and institutions of these three complex nations. The next event in Global Atlanta’s Latin American Crossroads series\, sponsored by Emory Executive Education\, will look at how Georgia companies and nonprofits are contributing to that goal through investment and partnership\, driving economic development as the U.S. governments how best to invest in regional stability.   \nKeynote/Introduction:  \nCharles Kuck\, managing attorney\, Kuck Baxter Immigration\nCharles H. (“Chuck”) Kuck is the Managing Attorney at Kuck Baxter Immigration in Atlanta\, Georgia. Chuck served as the National President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association from 2008-2009. He also served as President of the Alliance of Business Immigration Lawyers from 2010-2014 and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at Emory Law School. He previously served as an Adjunct at the University of Georgia for 13 years for both survey and advanced immigration law classes. He was named one of the top 5 immigration attorneys in the world by Chambers & Partners again in 2020\, the “Best Lawyer-Immigration” in Georgia by Best Lawyers in 2020 and was previously named one of the “100 Most Influential Georgians” by Georgia Trend magazine. He has practiced immigration law for over 30 years\, has spoken at numerous legal and business conferences on all types of immigration-related topics\, has testified in Congress on various aspects of Immigration Law and Immigration Reform\, is frequently quoted in the national press\, and appears regularly on national and local television and cable news outlets. \nPanel:   \nJim Reed\, president\, YKK Corp. of America\, which operates a factory in El Salvador\n \nJim Reed serves as president of YKK Corporation of America\, the parent company of the YKK Americas Group. There\, he is responsible for YKK’s businesses operating in the western hemisphere\, which consists of 16 dynamic operating companies spread across six time zones covering Canada\, the U.S.\, Mexico\, Central America\, Colombia\, Brazil\, Argentina and Chile.\nBefore becoming president\, Jim served as YKK’s Chief Legal Counsel. Prior to joining YKK\, Jim was in-house counsel for Georgia-Pacific\, LLC and also served as managing director of intellectual property licensing for BellSouth (and later for AT&T). He was also an associate at Troutman Sanders LLP in Atlanta\, Georgia. \nJim serves on the board of directors of The World Affairs Council\, The Atlanta Rotary Club\, and the Japan-America Society of Georgia. He graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of Georgia School of Law and lives in Marietta with his wife\, Sheri\, and their three children. \nJ.T. Way\, professor of history at Georgia State University\, Author of “Agrotropolis\,” a new book focusing on Guatemala’s urban development\n \nJ. T. Way is an Associate Professor who teaches and researches Latin American history at Georgia State University. A Central Americanist\, his main area of specialty is 20th- and 21st-century Guatemala\, about which he has published various articles and two scholarly books. The Mayan in the Mall: Globalization\, Development\, and the Making of Modern Guatemala (Duke\, 2012) maps the transnational project of development against the activities of the working poor in Guatemala City from 1920 to the new millennium\, showing how the largest city in Central America—where shantytowns and humble municipal and street markets abut luxurious malls and wealthy neighborhoods—came to have such stunning contrasts. Agrotropolis: Youth\, Street\, and Nation in the New Urban Guatemala (University of California\, 2021) teams an examination of the rapid urbanization of the agrarian countryside with the history of popular youth culture from 1983 to the 2010s. It shows how youth have used ethnic pride\, tradition\, pop culture\, and “street culture” to challenge the nation’s system of castes and create a popular alternative nationalism\, despite—and in dialogue with—the horrible conditions that confronted them.\nJ. T. has extensively traveled in Latin America since he first explored the region in a 14-month-long backpacking trip in 1991 and 1992\, later earning an MA in Latin American History at Tulane University\, and a second MA and his Ph.D. (2006) from Yale. He likes to joke that he left to do his doctoral research in Guatemala in 2002 and “never came back\,” since he ended up residing in the country until he joined the GSU faculty in 2012. During that time\, he founded and led a U.S.-international school and was a Faculty Affiliate of the University of Arizona\, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on Guatemala at CIRMA\, the Center for Mesoamerican Research (Centro de Investigaciones Regionales de Mesoamérica\, a prestigious social science archive and research center in Antigua\, Guatemala). At the time he joined the GSU faculty\, J. T. was serving as CIRMA’s Director\, a position he held from abroad through the first trimester of 2013. When global health conditions permit\, he still spends several months a year in Guatemala\, and is currently working on a book on the root causes of the flood of refugees from the Northern Triangle seeking asylum in the United States. He also regularly serves as an expert witness in asylum hearings for Guatemalans and Hondurans. \nJohn Burrough\, CEO\, Honduras Outreach International\, a large nonprofit providing education\, economic and health services in the Olancho region of northeastern Honduras \nJohn Burrough\, raised in Pinedale\, WY\, attended the University of Wyoming where he studied Geophysics/Nuclear and Particle Physics. He played for the Atlanta Falcons from 1995 to 1998 and then continued his career with Vikings and Rams. After retiring from the NFL in 2002\, he entered the residential construction business in Atlanta. Always involved with Christian missions as a volunteer\, John ultimately traded his business career in 2014 answering the call to full-time ministry with North Point Ministries and global(X). Mr. Burrough serves on several non-profit boards including Operation One Voice (serving wounded and fallen US Military Special Operation Forces)\, Heart for Lebanon (serving Iraqi and Syrian refugees in Lebanon)\, and he stays connected to the professional athlete network in Atlanta. John\, his wife\, and two children love to serve together and have participated in mission trips with HOI over the past 5 years. \nMr. Burrough joined HOI in 2019 as their Chief Executive Officer. HOI (formally Honduras Outreach) has been working to strengthen communities through faith and partnership in Central America for over 30 years. HOI’s works alongside communities to help them achieve sustainable transformation in the areas of health\, education\, agriculture\, economic and community development\, and spiritual life. \nMonica Novoa\, program manager and research faculty at Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute\, which builds innovation ecosystems throughout Latin America   \nMonica is a Research Faculty in the Economic Development Lab of the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2) at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In this role\, she leads projects in Latin America and the Caribbean to strengthen regional innovation economies. Her practice areas include applying evidence-based entrepreneurship principles and technology extension concepts for the development of innovation ecosystems that support entrepreneurs and strengthen the industrial base of communities\, countries\, and regions. She has managed projects for diverse entities such as universities\, university business incubators\, non-profit organizations\, economic development agencies\, and the private sector in Puerto Rico\, Chile\, Colombia\, Perú\, and Panamá\, among other countries. \nMonica’s 15-year career encompasses economic development\, entrepreneurship education\, and private sector management. Prior to joining Georgia Tech\, Monica was Associate Director at the Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business (GSB)\, where she led Stanford Ignite\, an innovation and entrepreneurship program. But it also signifies their decision to burn their past lives\, sacrificing themselves in hopes of reaching a future on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. Alexander-Nathani examines this process of “burning\,” traveling thousands of miles alongside those who have fled war and extreme poverty across the African continent only to find themselves trapped in Libya\, Algeria\, and Morocco. This book exposes the political agreements that have led to Europe’s control over African borders and the illicit practices that continue to mold North African countries into brutal holding cells for our world’s most vulnerable. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders introduces new ways of doing anthropological research in the modern era\, as Alexander-Nathani skillfully weaves images and individual stories into her analysis of changing migration flows at our world’s most critical border crossings. Trained as a cultural anthropologist\, her work is motivated by her belief that storytelling has the power to humanize complex political issues and bring positive social change. Her latest book\, Burning at Europe’s Borders (Oxford University Press\, 2020) and related documentary film The Burning (Small World Films\, 2020) uncover the human sides of our global migrant and refugee crisis. She currently serves as Founder and CEO of Small World Films\, a non-profit production studio\, which uses grounded research and social impact storytelling to lift the voices of marginalized populations to the global stage and fight for international policy change. \nIsabella’s work has been featured on BBC\, CNN\, NPR\, PRI\, and Al Jazeera\, and she is a regular contributor to SAPIENS\, where she writes a monthly column called “Borders.” Her recent speaking programs have brought her to stages around the world\, including the United Nations General Assembly and the Parliament of the World’s Religions\, where she has delivered keynote addresses on human rights to audiences of more than 10\,000. In 2016\, The American Anthropological Association presented her with the “Emerging Leader in Anthropology” award\, and her latest projects have been supported by grants from The National Science Foundation. She is proud to serve on the Advisory Board for several non-profit organizations\, including The Global Village Project\, the first school designed specifically for refugee girls; Stories Found\, an organization equipping African youth with filmmaking skills and technology; and SAPIENS\, a digital journal focused on connecting social science research to the public. \nOriginally from the southern United States\, Isabella has called New York\, Paris\, Chicago\, Rabat\, Atlanta\, and Bamako home over the years. She earned her degrees from New York University (BA)\, the University of Chicago (MA)\, Emory University (MA\, PhD)\, and the Spéos Institute in France (MFA)\, and she has held a faculty positions in the Departments of Anthropology and Film Studies at Emory University and the Department of Social Sciences at Université Mohammed V\, Morocco’s National University. Join MODA for a Tireside Chat about bicycle design with Craig Calfee of Calfee Design. \nCalfee bicycle frames were born in 1987 when Craig recognized that carbon fiber was going to be the material of choice for racing bikes. In 1991\, he got a huge boost when Tour de France winner Greg LeMond ordered 18 bikes for his team. Calfee has been a leader in bicycle design ever since. \nCraig explores other materials for building bikes as well\, such as hemp and bamboo. He’s used the durable\, inexpensive\, and sustainable material to build racing\, off-road\, double-decker\, and tandem bamboo bikes\, as well as a DIY bamboo bicycle kit. He’s also helped to create a bamboo bike industry in Africa\, where bikes are built with locally-grown bamboo and provide transportation and an income stream. \nThis program is supported by The Kendeda Fund as part of MODA’s Climate & Change Project.

SUMMARY:The Threat of Chinese Espionage
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans are aware that China looms large in the world of international relations. What is less known is just how great a threat China is to America’s national security. Is it true that intelligence suggests that Chinese hackers are garnering the personal information of American citizens? How is China targeting American academia to steal knowledge and innovation? And how are American companies targets of economic and technological espionage? \nFBI Special Agent in Charge Chris Hacker will discuss the Chinese threat\, economic espionage\, and China-related counterintelligence during this one-hour webinar. \n \n\n\n\n\nAbout SAC Hacker\nJ. C. “Chris” Hacker entered on duty with the FBI as a Special Agent in 2000. Following graduation from the FBI Academy\, he was assigned to the Jackson Division\, where he worked white collar crime\, public corruption\, and counterintelligence matters. He was also a member of the SWAT team and a firearms instructor. \nIn 2008\, Mr. Hacker was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent. In that role\, he oversaw the Jackson Division’s Counterterrorism\, Special Agent Bomb Technician\, and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Programs and led the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). In 2010\, he was promoted to the Counterterrorism Division’s (CTD) National JTTF. \nIn 2013\, Mr. Hacker was selected to serve as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Mobile Division’s National Security Branch (NSB). The next year he became the ASAC of the Criminal and Administrative Branch. \nIn 2015\, Mr. Hacker was promoted to Section Chief of the NSB at FBIHQ. In that role\, he served as the Chief of Staff and Special Assistant for the Executive Assistant Director and oversaw the Executive Staff Section which enhanced the coordination of critical issues affecting the Counterintelligence Division and CTD as well as the WMD Directorate\, Terrorist Screening Center and the High Value Interrogation Group. \nIn August 2016\, Mr. Hacker began serving as the Deputy Assistant Director of the Criminal Investigative Division (CID) where he oversaw all matters related to financial crimes\, public corruption\, civil rights\, and covert operations. In March 2018\, he was named Acting Assistant Director of CID. \nIn August of 2018\, Mr. Hacker was named Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Office. \nBefore he began his career with the FBI\, Mr. Hacker earned a Bachelor of Science in Police Administration from Eastern Kentucky University and served five years with the Lexington Police Department. He is married to Kristy and they have two children\, Taylor and Jack.

Chile. \nJoin us over Zoom to meet Germán Rocca\, trade commissioner and USA liaison for ProChile’s South Region office in Miami. We’ll discuss fintech\, startups\, agriculture\, mining and other sectors of opportunity as the innovative South American nation of 17 million continues to reach out to the region. \nSpeaker Bio\nGermán Rocca has a Bachelor in Fine Arts ( BFA ) from the University of Chile and holds an MBA from Adolfo Ibanez University. In 2012 he Co-founded Axioma Fintech Solutions\, Chile’s first financial technology company. After a couple of years as Executive Director of the Citizen Program at Chile’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs\, in 2015 he moved to Australia to take up the position of Oceania Regional Director at Crystal Lagoons. In November 2018 he was appointed by the Chilean Department of Foreign Affairs as the Chilean Trade Commissioner for the Southeast region in the U.S.A. at ProChile.
