SUMMARY:Author Talk: Mona Tajali's 'Women’s Political Representation in Iran and Turkey: Demanding a Seat at the Table'
DESCRIPTION:Women’s history month comes at a fraught time in Iran and Turkey\, two pivotal nations straddling the Middle East and Asia.  \nIn Iran\, the death of a young woman in police custody has thrown the oppression of women into stark relief\, sparking widespread protests led by women over the forced wearing of headscarves that have pressured the hardline regime.  \nIn Turkey\, meanwhile\, women have been asked to carry much of the trauma from an earthquake that has killed nearly 50\,000 people in the southeastern part of the country. \nThese acute issues comes on top of the chronic lack of representation in both countries. Women in Turkey occupy just 17 percent of available parliamentary seats. In Iran\, it’s just 3 percent.  \nThe event. To explore and compare the factors limiting female participation in politics in both countries\, join Global Atlanta for the season kickoff of Authors Amplified\, a series of virtual book talks in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center spotlighting Georgia voices on international issues.  \nWe’ll be chatting with Agnes Scott College Professor Dr. Mona Tajali\, author of Women’s Political Representation in Iran and Turkey: Demanding a Seat at the Table\, in a podcast-style interview that will be broadcast live from Constellations in downtown Atlanta.  \nAbout the book (text from the publisher): \n\nHow have women in many Muslim-majority countries been able to achieve surprising success despite the significant constraints imposed by conservative gender ideology and authoritarian political parties and systems? Through a comparative focus on Iran and Turkey\, Mona Tajili examines the activities and strategies of women’s rights groups across the ideological spectrum. She explores how various groups have negotiated with political elites in order to bolster female political representation and identifies the conditions that stimulate greater support to ease women’s path to political office. Studying how women’s groups manoeuvre within these structures is important to help our understanding of the gendered politics of autocratic regimes. \n\nAbout the author: \nMona Tajali is associate professor of international relations and women’s\, gender\, and sexuality studies at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta\, Georgia. She has authored (with Homa Hoodfar) Electoral Politics: Making Quotas Work for Women (WLUML 2011)\, and several scholarly articles on gender and politics in the Middle East. Since 2007 she has been collaborating with the research wing of Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) transnational solidarity network and since 2019 serves as a member of its executive board. \nAbout the series and sponsor: \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda.

SUMMARY:“Je Me Soulève” Movie Screening: Atlanta Francophonie Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta Francophonie Festival for a screening of the movie Je Me Soulève (2022) by Hugo Latulippe. \nThis screening will be in French with English subtitles. \nSYNOPSIS: Twenty young actors are brought together for a creation lab by stage directors Véronique and Gabrielle Côté\, to create a collective work at one of the great national theatres. Over a full year\, they scour contemporary Québécois poetry to tap into the spirit of the times. Whether in workshop settings or at the four corners of the territory\, we watch the creative process of Je me soulève unfold. What kind of people will we be in the future? How can art transform the world? Will we still be able to have children? Rebellious\, filled with the passion of those who dream of beauty\, obeying only their intuition\, they come together to forge an ode to life. And when one of theirs is elected to the Quebec’s National Assembly\, poetry literally becomes an integral part of the country’s political landscape. \nClick here to watch the trailer (in French). \nDirected by: Hugo Latulippe \nThis event is made possible by the Quebec Government Office in Atlanta

SUMMARY:The World Against Trafficking Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The World Against Trafficking Art Exhibit\, hosted in the historic Underground Atlanta\, will be divided into four sections: the journey\, the trade\, the aftermath\, and the hope. The World Against Trafficking exhibition is a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about the human trafficking crisis interactively and memorably. \nHuman trafficking is an urgent global issue\, and tackling it now is of utmost importance. SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series -- Interview With Ravi Saligram\, CEO of Newell Brands: Learning and Leading Through a Global Turnaround
DESCRIPTION:When Ravi Saligram joined Newell Brands in 2019 as President & CEO\, the company was experiencing poor performance\, low employee engagement and excessive complexity. In 2020\, Ravi and the world-class leadership team he’d built were also faced with leading through the unexpected and monumental issues presented by COVID. \nDespite these challenges\, employee engagement scores increased significantly\, and the company’s turnaround efforts persisted.\nWhile Ravi announced his May retirement earlier this year\, there’s no doubt the company has strengthened during his tenure. Complexity and overhead costs have been reduced; Project Ovid\, a multi-year initiative consolidating 23 unique supply chains into one\, was successfully implemented; a new innovation operating model was introduced\, and innovations were launched that leveraged COVID trends; automation has been scaled and the company has best-in-class productivity and safety records. Notably\, Newell Brands was named one of Fortune’s Most Admired Companies in 2022 and 2023\, a recognition it had not previously received. \nRavi is a three-time public CEO\, also having led OfficeMax\, Inc. and Ritchie Brothers. Despite arriving in the United States with less than $20 in his pocket\, he earned an MBA from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, and has lived in six countries and worked in many more during his nearly 40-year career\, which began at Leo Burnett in Chicago. \nDuring this webinar\, Ravi will speak with Global Atlanta Managing Editor Trevor Williams and share the following key takeaways:\n• The importance of a people-first approach and how to drive a culture of engagement\n• How companies can foster diversity\, inclusion and belonging and be a force for good\n• The necessity of cross-cultural competency and how international experience shapes perspective

SUMMARY:Human Security Challenges Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This symposium will explore the role of state\, non-state\, and international actors in solving or mitigating human security challenges. Human security\, as a governing principle\, emphasizes freedom from want and freedom from fear as opposed to traditional national security\, which emphasizes sovereignty and territorial integrity. Threats to human security manifest in several different ways\, including economic\, food\, healthcare\, and environmental challenges for institutions that may have a role in addressing. The symposium will bring together scholars\, practitioners\, and students from all over the world to discuss this impactful and important topic. \nThe University of North Georgia is partnering with the Army War College Strategic Studies Institute\, the Army Strategist Association\, the Association of the U.S. Army and the Atlanta Council on International Relations to host this symposium on the Dahlonega Campus of the University of North Georgia\, one of six senior military colleges in the United States\, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northeast Georgia. From 5-6 April 2023\, participants will hear from a series of noteworthy speakers interspersed with panel discussions and question and answer sessions.

SUMMARY:Bruce Onobrakpeya: The Mask and the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Join the High Museum of Art for the first solo exhibition at an American museum for sculptor and printmaker Bruce Onobrakpeya (born 1932)\, one of the fathers of Nigerian modernism and a founding member of the Zaria Art Society\, an art collective that developed the “natural synthesis” aesthetic that came to define early postcolonial Nigerian art. The Mask and the Cross describes the artist’s creative phase from 1967 through 1978\, during which he created numerous works marrying Nigerian tradition\, folklore\, and cosmology with Catholic motifs and stories from the Bible. This period began with the creation of a series commissioned by the Catholic Church titled Fourteen Stations of the Cross\, which depicts scenes from the last earthly day of Jesus Christ. Onobrakpeya portrays Biblical characters as Nigerian and reimagines Biblical scenes in Nigerian settings. This exhibition will consider religious “double belonging” as an exercise in agency\, subversion\, and cultural resilience. Grounded in the High’s own edition of Onobrakpeya’s Fourteen Stations of the Cross prints\, The Mask and the Cross will showcase other works from this period\, as well as examples from later periods\, as themes of religious hybridity and multiplicity continue to appear throughout the artist’s sixty-year career.

SUMMARY:Lebanon: A Critical Nation in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Will Lebanon set the Middle East ablaze? Since the mid-1940s\, Lebanon\, geo strategically located between Syria and Israel\, has a history of alternating sectarian violence and prosperity. Its geography favors commercial and financial success\, with a people weaned on trade and finance. Nevertheless\, Syria’s historical goal to dominate Lebanon\, Iranian efforts to use Lebanon as a base to threaten Israel’s existence\, continued sectarian conflict\, and Hizballah’s continued moves to prevent government reform are contributing to an impending collapse. With a hapless UN peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon and Russian and American forces in nearby Syria\, Lebanon’s collapse could ignite the region in open warfare. \nCancellation Policy: If you need to cancel\, please do so not later than 48 hours before the event. ACIR is charged for your meal\, so no refund can be provided. \nAbout Angela Khoury \nAngela Khoury was born and raised in Beirut\, Lebanon. The civil war in Lebanon did not stop her pursuit of an Engineering Degree\, graduating from l’Ecole Superieure des Ingenieurs de Beyrouth\, in 1990. \nHer professional career began in France in 1991\, joining a start-up company in fintech. In 1992\, she moved to the United States with her late husband\, Dr. Hanna Khoury. She continued her association with the French-based company\, Murex\, contributing to its growth from a start-up to an international company with over 2000 employees. \nWhile engaged in raising a family with three children\, and her professional responsibilities\, she remained active with her church and non-profits such as the Alif Institute\, an Arab American Cultural Center in Atlanta\, and later became its Executive Director. In 2018\, She joined the American University of Beirut (AUB) as the Associate Director of Development\, focusing on fundraising to support education and healthcare in Lebanon and throughout the Middle East. \nOver 30 years\, Khoury has frequently traveled on an annual basis to Lebanon\, maintaining close ties with friends/family\, business executives\, the American University of Beirut\, and members of the Lebanese government.

SUMMARY:Connecting Atlanta to the World through City Diplomacy
DESCRIPTION:The Truman Center\, the Atlanta Mayor’s Office & the Metro Atlanta Chamber invite you to a discussion on the city’s international relations. \nAtlanta’s place in the world is rapidly evolving. The city has grown into a global gateway and logistics hub\, and home to major Fortune 500 companies\, global news outlets\, and world-class academic institutions. Atlanta’s international engagement is also anchored in its civil rights legacy\, diversity and thriving migrant and diaspora communities\, which drive the city’s innovation and creativity. \nAs evidenced by Mayor Dickens’ decision to combine the city’s offices focused on international and immigration affairs into an expanded Office of Immigrant and International Affairs\, Atlanta is building an international engagement strategy that connects economic opportunity to the global fight for justice and equality. \nOn April 14\, the Truman Center for National Policy\, the City of Atlanta and the Metro Atlanta Chamber will host an event to explore how to maximize the benefits of the city’s diplomacy for all Atlantans and the role of Atlanta in American foreign policy. This event will highlight findings from Truman’s City & State Diplomacy Task Force\, co-chaired by Mayor Dickens\, about how cities’ international engagement can deliver benefits for constituents and improve the United States’ global standing. \nThe panel discussion will feature Mayor Andre Dickens of Atlanta\, Paige Alexander\, CEO of the Carter Center\, and Katie Kirkpatrick\, President and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber.
