DESCRIPTION:ACIR is honored to host High Representative Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu\, the sitting Under Secretary General for Disarmament Affairs at the United Nations\, on June 25\, 2018 as she speaks about “Securing Our Common Future: an Agenda for Disarmament.” In light of a deteriorating international security environment\, including a return to Cold War tensions\, and the seeming neglect of arms control as a means for building trust\, mitigating risk and ensuring sustainable peace and security is front and center on Ms. Nakamitzu’s agenda. During her address\, she will present hers and the UN’s thoughts on issues surrounding weapons of mass destruction and other strategic weapons\, conventional weapons and their impacts on civilians\, and on future technologies and weapons systems. Come listen to Ms. Nakamitsu as she provides analysis of the current international security situation and provides more detail on specific policies. \nMs. Izumi Nakamitsu assumed her position as Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs on 1 May 2017. Prior to taking on this post\, Ms. Nakamitsu served as Assistant Administrator of the Crisis Response Unit at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 2014.

DESCRIPTION:“What if You Were in my Shoes” Photo Exhibition\nAtlantic Institute in partnership with Set Them Free would like to invite you to the “What if You Were in My Shoes” photo exhibition at Milton Public Library. \nAbout Set Them Free and the background of the Exhibition. \nSet Them Free is an initiative that is launched by several civil society organizations working in collaboration to promote the rights of women and children in Turkey. Platform’s mission is to raise awareness on the tens of thousands of women and 668 babies\, who have been arbitrarily jailed in Turkey following the failed coup attempt of July 2016. The platform gives voice to the stories of these women and babies in jail\, as well as to the ones who have been forced to live in exile outside of Turkey. \nAfter the failed coup attempt of July 2017 in Turkey\, there has been a tremendous rise of human rights violations. Hundreds of thousands of public officers\, academicians\, journalists\, teachers\, civil servants are dismissed\, along with thousands of arbitrary detentions with groundless allegations. Currently there are 9\,700 women in jails along with 665 children\, whose access to health care is not allowed in jails. The social labelling and the witch-hunt in Turkey forced so many families to a mandatory exile to seek a better future. \nThe exhibition organized by the Set Them Free Atlanta coordinators aims to raise awareness on these tragic forced-migration stories from Turkey. More than 50 photos and their background stories will be displayed along with an introductory video.

DESCRIPTION:AgLanta Eats features a variety of tastings prepared by top\, local chefs utilizing the freshest ingredients from farms in metro Atlanta. It’s all going down at the beautiful Atlanta Botanical Gardens\, which will be open exclusively to attendees of AgLanta Eats. Add in your pick of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages\, a silent auction\, and live music\, and you’ve got a recipe for an epic evening on Monday\, July 16! \nProceeds from the evening benefit the AgLanta “Grows-A-Lot” program\, in association with Groundwork Atlanta\, which supports the conversion of vacant and underutilized parcels owned by the City of Atlanta and Georgia Power into productive urban farms and gardens. This year\, the AgLanta “Grows-A-Lot” team has launched four pilot sites\, with five more launching later this year. Join them in celebrating the rich culture and agricultural traditions of the city at AgLanta Eats\, and help fund the continued growth of Atlanta’s urban food system! \nIn addition to access to the Atlanta Botanical Garden during this private event\, general admission tickets include three coupons for tastings and one drink (additional tasting coupons and drinks will be available for purchase at the event). VIP tickets include five tasting coupons and two drinks\, plus a pre-event reception from 4-5pm\, free parking\, and exclusive access to the rooftop terrace with additional food and spectacular views available throughout the main event.
