SUMMARY:Ambassador Discussion -- Estonia: Forging a Digital Society
DESCRIPTION:Imagine life where the phrase “government bureaucracy” doesn’t make you wince. That life exists in Estonia where 99 percent of public services are available online 24 hours a day. Nearly a third of Estonians vote via the internet. They file their taxes online in under five minutes. Parents of newborns access benefits almost automatically. Estonians are living in the world’s first digital society.\n\nWhen Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991\, its technological resources were obsolete. Estonian leaders viewed this as an extraordinary opportunity to catch up with the West. Today\, Estonia is home to more tech unicorns than any other small country globally\, thanks to digital immigration and friendly tax rates. (Fun fact: Skype was founded in Estonia in 2003!)\n\nThe World Affairs Council of Atlanta will dive into the details with the Ambassador of Estonia to the United States\, Kristjan Prikk. Join the council at the Smith Gambrell Russell Law Firm for breakfast on Friday\, March 4\, 2022\, at 8 AM ET. Ambassador Prikk will share insights and answer our questions on Estonia‘s state of affairs\, including NATO\, Ukraine-Russia tensions\, the strengths and risks of its digital society\, and more.\n\nSpots are limited. Register today to secure your spot!\n\nThis program is sponsored by the Honorary Consulate of Estonia in Georgia.

SUMMARY:International Women's Day with the Author Regina Düring
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of International Women’s Day\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta and Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta cordially invite you to a virtual book discussion with Swiss/German author Regina Dürig about her new novel “Federn Lassen” (engl. Losing Skin). \nAn author\, performer\, and lecturer in literary writing\, Regina Dürig has published miniatures\, short stories\, radio plays\, children‘s books\, and young adult novels. She has received numerous awards for her work\, including the Peter Härtling Prize\, the Wartholz Literature Prize\, and the Literature Prize of the Canton of Bern. Born in Mannheim\, Germany\, Regina Dürig moved to Switzerland to study Literary Writing in Biel\, where she currently resides. \nRegina Dürig’s novel “Federn Lassen” dips into different scenes from the life of a woman growing up in the present day\, with the book spanning her life from the ages of four to thirty-eight. It depicts various situations of violence this woman experiences ranging from subtle psychological violence to physical assaults. The book is narrated in the second person\, without ever revealing the name of the woman. Regina Dürig’s novel is a valuable addition to a growing genre\, exploring themes closely connected with the Everyday Sexism and #metoo movements. \nParticipants are invited to order the original German version of the book “Federn lassen” in advance of the book discussion on March 8\, 2022! A limited amount of copies for the price of $20 can be purchased now\, look for the button in the top right corner. As the book has not been published in the U.S. yet\, this is a unique opportunity for participants to get their hands on a novel that – at a time when casual violence against women and minorities is very much in the news – is a necessary contribution to a timely debate! \nEveryone is welcome to join the discussion\, regardless of whether you have purchased the book or not.\nThe discussion will be moderated by Raegan Lemmond\, German Instructor from the University of Alabama. The event will be bilingual\, in German and English. The author will speak German and an interpreter will translate consecutively\, meaning all levels of German are welcome! \n***PLEASE NOTE:\nFor questions about the event or the book please contact the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta at atlanta.info@eda.admin.ch \nFor questions about payments please contact the Goethe Zentrum at info@goetheatlanta.org

SUMMARY:Author Discussion - Giving Up Is Not an Option by Dr. Hani Khoury
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alif Institute and Dr. Hani Khoury for an exciting discussion over the inspiring story of his experiences coming to the United States found in his newest book: “Giving Up Is Not an Option”. Books will be available for purchase before the event. \nHani Q. Khoury is Professor and Coordinator of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics\, Science\, and Informatics\nCollege of Professional Advancement at Mercer Univesity. In his memoirs\, Professor Khoury narrates the highlights of the complexities of his life and the events which have nurtured it. He was sentenced to an electric wheelchair at the age of 18 due to a progressive physical disorder. His story\, like many others\, is filled with challenges\, setbacks\, dreams\, and\, most importantly\, hope. The juxtaposition of two very different cultural settings\, Israeli-occupied Palestine\, and the United States of America\, will provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the meaning and implications of liberty and self-determination\, both individually and collectively. \nHe tells the story of his departure from the long-disputed land in Palestine to a new world that has become for him a place of new beginnings and friendships\, unforeseen challenges\, and personal and professional accomplishments. \nAccompanied by his parents\, he began his journey to freedom on August 12\, 1983\, when the plane from Amman\, Jordan landed at JFK International Airport in New York City. His new life began that day in a country that is known for its freedoms and the rule of law. In this new world and with the help of new and advanced technologies\, he was able to leave the past for a new and promising future. In his newly adopted country\, Hani was able to obtain his higher education\, form a family\, gain employment as a professor of mathematics at the university level\, and become a productive member of society. In this landscape of dreams that we call America\, and previously in his homeland in Palestine\, he has met many wonderful people from different faiths and backgrounds. Their unparalleled humanity and support have made it possible for him to live out the truth that “when and where there is a will\, there is a way.” \nThe event is free and open to the public with RSVP. Light refreshments will be served. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to hear about this piece!

SUMMARY:2022 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: Industrial Policy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, the annual 2022 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 3 – March 31\, 2022 at 7:30 PM. There is a fee to register for the virtual lecture series\, and registration is required to receive the event link. \nThis week’s Topic: Industrial Policy \n\nSpeaker: Dr. John McIntyre\, Georgia Institute of Technology\n\nThe current discussion of industrial policy in the United States is not simply about whether or not to support specific companies or industries\, but about trust or mistrust of the government and its ability to manage the economy and deal with a rising China. The upheaval in supply chains during the pandemic exposed weaknesses in the international economy. What policies can the United States implement to deal with trade and the economy? \nAbout the Series: \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. There is a bonus ninth topic included in 2022\, to view the other 2022 topics or learn more about Great Decisions\, visit Gciv.org/programs/gd.

SUMMARY:William Neuman: Author of 'Things Are Never So Bad That They Can't Get Worse: Inside the Collapse of Venezuela'
DESCRIPTION:Today\, Venezuela is a country of perpetual crisis—a country of rolling blackouts\, nearly worthless currency\, uncertain supply of water and food\, and extreme poverty. In the same land where oil—the largest reserve in the world—sits so close to the surface that it bubbles from the ground\, where gold and other mineral resources are abundant\, and where the government spends billions of dollars on public works projects that go abandoned\, the supermarket shelves are bare and the hospitals have no medicine. Twenty percent of the population has fled\, creating the largest refugee exodus in the world\, rivaling only war-torn Syria’s crisis. Venezuela’s collapse affects all of Latin America\, as well as the United States and the international communityRepublicans like to point to Venezuela as the perfect example of the emptiness of socialism\, but it is a better model for something else: the destructive potential of charismatic populist leadership. The ascent of Hugo Chávez was a precursor to the emergence of strongmen that can now be seen all over the world\, and the success of the corrupt economy he presided over only lasted while oil sold for more than $100 a barrel. Chávez’s regime and policies\, which have been reinforced under Nicolás Maduro\, squandered abundant resources and ultimately bankrupted the country. \nThings Are Never So Bad That They Can’t Get Worse is a fluid combination of journalism\, memoir\, and history that chronicles Venezuela’s tragic journey from petro-riches to poverty. Author William Neuman witnessed it all firsthand while living in Caracas and serving as the New York Times Andes Region Bureau Chief. His book paints a clear-eyed\, riveting\, and highly personal portrait of the crisis unfolding in real time\, with all of its tropical surrealism\, extremes of wealth and suffering\, and gripping drama. It is also a heartfelt reflection of the country’s great beauty and vibrancy—and the energy\, passion\, and humor of its people\, even under the most challenging circumstances. \nAbout the Author \nWilliam Neuman is an author and journalist who reported for the New York Times for over 15 years. He served as the Times Andes Region Bureau Chief from 2012 to 2016 while based in Caracas\, Venezuela. He previously reported for the New York Post and his work has also been featured by the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram\, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel\, and The Independent\, among others. He began his journalism career while living in Mexico and has published English translations of several Spanish-language novels. \nPromotional language provided by publisher.

SUMMARY:2022 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: Drug Policy in Latin America
\nThis Week’s Topic: Drug Policy in Latin America \n\nSpeaker: Dr. Alex Berg\n\nThe issue of migration to the United States from Latin America has overshadowed the war on drugs\, which has been underway for decades with little signs of progress. What are the roots and the bureaucratic logic behind today’s dominant drug policies in Latin America? Is it time to reconsider punitive drug control policies that disrupt supply chains and punish drug possession? \nAbout the Series: \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. There is a bonus ninth topic included in 2022\, to view the other 2022 topics or learn more about Great Decisions\, visit Gciv.org/programs/gd.
