SUMMARY:Addressing the Climate Crisis from Atlanta to the World:  A Global Urgency that Demands Locally-Led Multi-Lateral Responses
DESCRIPTION:Impacts of the climate crisis are being felt across the globe\, magnifying long-standing vulnerabilities\, inequities\, and conflicts. Resilience is not about maintaining the status quo. It entails transforming our relationships with nature\, people\, things\, and money and recognizing the interconnectedness of life on earth. Therefore\, it is only through integrated approaches and collective action – led by those who are most affected – that we can successfully mitigate climate change and prepare and adapt to its impacts. \n\n\n\nThis event presents innovative work by Atlanta-based non-profits such as CARE and The Carter Center led by these understandings. Their work features efforts that: \n\n\n\n\nengage diverse stakeholders\, governments\, scientific and educational institutions\, private sector\, civil society\, and local communities in devising equitable solutions and mitigating social conflicts.\n\n\n\nsupport a just-transition to a climate-smart economy by ensuring that natural resources needed to fuel it are sourced in environmentally sound and equitable ways; and\n\n\n\npromote livelihood security\, wellbeing\, and opportunities to flourish in a changing climate for the most impoverished and marginalized groups. \n\n\n\n\nMany examples of their work will illustrate the kind of evidence-based\, multi-partner initiatives that are key to building sustainable futures. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nNicole Kruse\, Vice President of Development\, The Carter Center \n\n\n\nSusan Marx\, Director of Human Rights Program\, The Carter Center \n\n\n\nMadhu Deshmukh\, Vice President for Program Strategies and Innovation\, CARE \n\n\n\nDalmar Ainashe\, Senior Technical Advisor for Food Security\,  Livelihoods\, and Nutrition \n\n\n\nModerated by: Eri Saikawa\, Professor\, Winship Distinguished Research Professor of Environmental Sciences\, Director of Graduate Studies\, Director of Emory Climate Talks \n\n\n\nOpening Remarks by: Consul General of France\, Anne Laure Desjonquères \n\n\n\nCARE’s Vision 2030 Strategy\nincludes a focus on both climate justice and humanitarian response\, centered in particular on the needs of women and girls. Our climate justice goal is 25 million poor and marginalized people\, especially women and girls\, have strengthened their resilience and adaptive capacities to the effects of climate change. We do this through an integrated approach that includes three interconnected pathways:  increased capacities and assets\, an improved enabling environment through policies and actions by power holders\, and strengthened collective voice and action of civil society\, including social movements. As an example of this approach\, CARE could present the results of its Hamzari program in Niger\, with an integrated approach to food security and resilience to climate change. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, CARE will focus on the climate change-induced escalating humanitarian crises unfolding in the Sahel region of West Africa. The discussion will be structured into two main segments.Segment 1: The Climate Crisis in the Sahel: This section will explore the climate change-induced drivers that are amplifying humanitarian crises in the Sahel\, with a keen focus on drought\, desertification\, and water scarcity. These factors are contributing to heightened conflicts\, mass migrations\, and numerous socio-economic challenges\, posing a grave threat to the local communities and underscoring the need for a swift and coordinated response.Segment 2: CARE’s Humanitarian Response: transitioning from problem analysis to solution propositions\, this part will highlight CARE’s interventions in the region\, demonstrating a balanced approach of immediate humanitarian aid and long-term resilience-building activities. Through various strategies including cash assistance programs\, social safety nets\, GBV risk mitigation\, and support for local agriculture and livelihoods\, CARE collaborates with local authorities and partners\, especially women-led As we discuss and examine these pressing humanitarian challenges\, our objective is to foster unified dialogue that elevates awareness of the growing humanitarian crises in the Sahel\, emphasizing CARE’s pivotal role in not only delivering urgent interventions but also in facilitating long-term resilience strategies that help communities help themselves amidst these escalating climate-induced crises in West Africa. Collectively\, we aspire to forge a future where communities are resilient\, self-sufficient\, and poised to prosper amidst shifting climatic landscapes. \n\n\n\n\nThe Carter Center has worked in French-speaking African countries for more than 40 years\,\nincluding in Mali\, the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Chad\, Niger and Tunisia. Climate change has increasingly affected these nations\, and The Carter Center is responding\, focusing on contributing to a just transition. For example\, the new climate economy will be built using 17 critical minerals and metals that are sourced from countries experiencing the highest climate risk. Many of these minerals are mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since 2007\, The Carter Center’s Extractive Industries Governance program (EIG) has been working to advance transparency and accountability in the extractive sector to ensure that the DRC’s vast natural resource wealth contributes to equitable and sustainable development\, environmental justice\, and the fulfillment of economic\, social and cultural rights for all Congolese people through a “just transition”. Driven by internationally recognized precepts for extractive industry good governance which champion transparency\, an accountable government\, and an informed public\, the Center has worked with the Congolese government\, civil society\, and the private sector to advocate for these core necessities within the DRC’s extractive industry. \n\n\n\n\nEmory Climate Talks is a student-centered initiative\ncreating opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to become the agents of change in the climate change movement. Higher education brings an essential voice to efforts on climate change and we have supported the annual student delegation to the UN climate talks since 2015. Emory Climate Talks hosts a variety of speakers as part of an ongoing conversation series to engage across a multitude of climate-related priorities\, creating a platform for Emory students\, alumni and faculty to share their experience and expertise in addressing climate change. \n\n\n\n\nAtlanta Global Partnerships – Emory University\nEmory University’s Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives established Atlanta Global Partnerships to foster and support conditions for collaboration among groups engaging in international work within the Emory and Atlanta communities to leverage local Atlanta partnerships and to unleash the power of global collaboration. Atlanta Global Partnerships collaborates with a coalition of Atlanta universities to offer multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary opportunities to strengthen collaborative networks of scholars and practitioners supporting global research and education initiatives in greater Atlanta. \n\n\n\n\nFrance Atlanta\nFrance-Atlanta is an annual event series co-organized by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology\, in partnership with 20+ local and international partners. Designed to foster transatlantic cooperation and exchange in the fields of science\, culture\, business and humanitarian affairs\, France-Atlanta has drawn more than 30\,000 participants since its creation in 2010.France-Atlanta is presented under the high auspices of the Ambassador of France to the United States\, the Governor of Georgia\, and the Mayor of Atlanta.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Flamenco Black
DESCRIPTION:Flamenco Black combines the art of flamenco\, contemporary dance\, and traditions of the African Diaspora. Dances reflect African influences on flamenco in the New World. This important and little-known aspect of flamenco demonstrates – on two sides of the Atlantic Ocean – ways in which communities are connected across geography and history. It is a surprising element of flamenco\, an art form that for many is synonymous with Spanish culture and its Moorish and Romani influences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:General David Petraeus\, Author of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta History Center for an Author Talk with General David Petraeus\, author of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. \n\n\n\nTwo leading authorities—an acclaimed historian and the outstanding battlefield commander and strategist of our time—collaborate on a landmark examination of war since 1945. Conflict is both a sweeping history of the evolution of warfare up to Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine\, and a penetrating analysis of what we must learn from the past—and anticipate in the future—in order to navigate an increasingly perilous world. \n\n\n\nIn this deep and incisive study\, General David Petraeus\, who commanded the US-led coalitions in both Iraq\, during the Surge\, and Afghanistan and former CIA director\, and the prize-winning historian Andrew Roberts\, explore over 70 years of conflict\, drawing significant lessons and insights from their fresh analysis of the past. Drawing on their different perspectives and areas of expertise\, Petraeus and Roberts show how often critical mistakes have been repeated time and again\, and the challenge\, for statesmen and generals alike\, of learning to adapt to various new weapon systems\, theories and strategies. Among the conflicts examined are the Arab-Israeli wars\, the Korean and Vietnam Wars\, the two Gulf Wars\, the Balkan wars in the former Yugoslavia\, and both the Soviet and Coalition wars in Afghanistan\, as well as guerilla conflicts in Africa and South America. Conflict culminates with a bracing look at Putin’s disastrous invasion of Ukraine\, yet another case study in the tragic results when leaders refuse to learn from history\, and an assessment of the nature of future warfare. Filled with sharp insight and the wisdom of experience\, Conflict is not only a critical assessment of our recent past\, but also an essential primer of modern warfare that provides crucial knowledge for waging battle today as well as for understanding what the decades ahead will bring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nGeneral David Petraeus\, US Army (Ret.) is one of the leading battlefield commanders and strategists of our time.  He served over 37 years in the US military culminating his career with six consecutive commands as a general officer\, five of which were in combat\, including command of the Surge in Iraq\, US Central Command\, and NATO/US Forces in Afghanistan.  He subsequently served as Director of the CIA\, following confirmation by the Senate by a vote of 94-0\, during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror \n\n\n\nGeneral Petraeus is now a Partner with the global investment firm KKR and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute\, which he established in 2013.  He also serves on corporate boards\, is the Kissinger Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson School\, and is the co-author\, with Andrew Roberts\, of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. \n\n\n\nGeneral Petraeus graduated with distinction from the US Military Academy\, earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University\, and has held academic appointments at 5 universities in addition to his current position at Yale.  He is also Co-Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Global Advisory Council\, Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute\, and a member of the Trilateral Commission\, Council on Foreign Relations\, and Aspen Strategy Group.  \n\n\n\nHis awards include four Defense Distinguished Service Medals\, the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award\, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor\, the Combat Action Badge\, the Ranger tab\, and master parachutist wings.  He has also been decorated by 14 foreign countries and is believed to be the only person in uniform to throw out the first pitch of a World Series game and do the coin toss for a Super Bowl.  He was runner-up to Vladimir Putin for Time Person of the Year in 2007\, the Daily Telegraph Man of the Year\, twice a Time 100 selectee\, three times a Foreign Policy top public intellectual\, Prospect magazine’s Public Intellectual of the Year\, one of US News and World Report’s Top 25 Leaders\, and sanctioned by Russia (in 2022). \n\n\n\nThis event is powered by ATLVets\, in partnership with BENS\, Atlanta Press Club and VETLANTA \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

It is in this spirit that the BBC each year invites a leading figure to deliver a series of lectures on radio. The aim is to advance public understanding and debate about significant issues of contemporary interest. \n\n\n\nThe very first BBC Reith lecturer was the philosopher\, Bertrand Russell who spoke on “Authority and the Individual”. Among his successors were Arnold Toynbee (The World and the West\, 1952)\, Robert Oppenheimer (Science and the Common Understanding\, 1953) and J.K. Galbraith (The New Industrial State\, 1966). The Reith lectures have also been delivered by the Chief Rabbi\, Dr Jonathan Sacks (The Persistence of Faith\, 1990)\, Dr Steve Jones (The Language of the Genes\, 1991)\, Michael Sandal (A New Citizenship\, 2009)\, Martin Rees (Scientific Horizons\, 2010) and Aung San Suu Kyi and Eliza Manningham-Buller (Securing Freedom\, 2011). Most recently the Reith Lecturers have been Niall Ferguson (The Rule of Law and Its Enemies\, 2012)\, Grayson Perry (Playing to the Gallery\, 2013)\, Dr. Atul Gawande (The Future of Medicine\, 2015)\, Stephen Hawking (Black Holes\, 2016)\, Kwame Anthony Appiah (Mistaken Identities\, 2016) and Hilary Mantel (Resurrection: The Art and Craft\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Swiss Consulate Documentary Screening: 'Inferno in Paradiso'
DESCRIPTION:The Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta has the pleasure to collaborate once again with the Department of French and Italian of the Emory College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in the context of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo. This year’s Settimana (Oct. 16-22) had the theme “Italian and Sustainability” (L’italiano e la sostenibilità)\, which is why we will be screening the Swiss environmental documentary INFERNO IN PARADISO. \n\n\n\nAbout the film: In Salento\, cancer has increased by 40%; the air\, the earth and the water are poisoned\, the land of the “Mediterranean diet” has become a Hell in Paradise. This beautiful region is being used for a giant garbage dump. How did such pervasive pollution come to this rural area? We traveled South to witness the damage\, to meet those who live in this hell\, and to see if and how they can cope. All is not lost: there is organized resistance\, with criminal and civil cases underway against the Italian State. The film\, beginning and ending in Switzerland\, is a heartfelt cry to put a stop to the unconscionable greed that has so much harmed the people and their land. \n\n\n\nYou will be able to watch the movie in Italian with English subtitles. The Swiss director of the movie\, Tiziana Caminada\, is pleased to join us via video to answer your questions at the end of the screening. The event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nJoin for this insightful story on Thursday\, November 30\, 2023\, at 6:30 PM at Emory University (Goodrich C. White Hall\, room #112). Doors open at 6:30 PM and the screening starts at 7 PM. Refreshments will be served prior to the screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
