SUMMARY:The Media and The Nuremberg Trials
DESCRIPTION:Join the Goethe-Zentrum as theyw welcome Nuremberg journalist\, Steffen Radlmaier for a lecture entitled “The Media and the Nuremberg Trials\, Nuremberg 1945/46.” \nThe Nuremberg Trials began in the autumn of 1945. Their historical relevance is unquestioned. For the first time ever\, the political and military leaders responsible for a war were charged and convicted in a court of law. The event generated huge interest\, in particular as the Allies intended it be used as a lesson for future generations. Despite that long-sighted goal\, however\, in the years following have we really become capable of learning from historical mistakes?

SUMMARY:From Brexit to Trump: Populism on the March Across the West
DESCRIPTION:Countries from the United Kingdom\, to Colombia\, to the United States are facing contradicting political narratives with one component in common: populism. Populism has variants: left- and right-wing\, from Bernie Sanders to Trump\, from Syriza (leftist party in Greece) to the National Party in France. David Rennie\, the Washington bureau chief of The Economist magazine\, argues American politics are experiencing a shift as right-left labels are less and less useful to define national politics as populism “sweeps the rich\, democratic world.” \nRennie\, an award winning journalist who has been critical of the Trump Administration in his Lexington column\, will speak about how American populism confounds conventional political analysis. He will offer examples from Europe on how to confront it badly\, and explain why the U.S. has strengths to deal with populism in a positive way. \nRennie will be in conversation with Robyn Curnow\, CNN anchor and host of “CNN’s International Desk with Robyn Curnow\,” which airs weekdays at 11:00 a.m. ET. Curnow has extensive experience covering critical events from anchoring CNN’s coverage of the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels\, to Obama’s historic visit to Cuba\, to hosting exclusive interviews with George W. Bush and Michelle Obama. \nMembers: $15. Nonmembers $25.

SUMMARY:Billy & The Joels
DESCRIPTION:Join The Center\, as performing artists and musicians tell the German-Jewish family history of the American Rock Star\, Billy Joel. The Joel family story tragically mirrors the history of many within the 20th century. Together the Joels fled Nazi Germany to the United States\, to overcome oppression and poverty. \nThe doors open at 6:00 PM. The program officially begins at 6:30 PM with a special performance of some of Billy Joel’s most famous songs by Stefan Angele and Wernder Kandzoraby. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session with Steffen Radmaier\, a journalist and author from Nuremberg who tells the Joel family’s story. \nAbout Billy Joel’s German-Jewish Ancestry \nIn the 1920s\, Karl Armson\, a Jew from Nuremberg\, and his wife had saved up enough money to open a garment trading company. Business was good and it could have been the perfect success story if Adolf Hitler had not taken power in Germany. Together with their first son\, Helmut\, the Joels fled from the Nazis\, first to Berlin\, later to Switzerland. Their company was sold for a low price to Josef Neckermann who later became the German catalogue company mogul. The Joel family reached Cuba and travelled on to New York where they lived on the poverty line. Helmut married Rosalind Nyman from Brooklyn and their son William “Billy” Martin (now known as Billy Joel) was born in 1949. When the marriage broke apart\, Helmut went back to Germany on his own\, married again and had his second son Alexander. Today Alexander is an internationally acclaimed conductor. Helmut´s first son Billy has sold over 100 million records and is one of the most successful solo artists of Pop music with hits like “River of Dreams” or “Just the Way You Are”. \nAbout the musical performers \nStefan Angele and Wernder Kandzora perform some of the most famous Billy Joel songs from”Just the Way You Are” to “Piano Man”. Their performance pays homage to this great artist who enthuses and touches his audience every time he performance his songs.

SUMMARY:Che Malambo: Muy Macho Men!
DESCRIPTION:Danced exclusively by men\, malambo dates to the 17th century when it emerged on the Argentine Pampas as a competitive duel among gauchos (or cowboys) to prove prowess\, strength\, and vigor. Today\, Argentina’s Che Malambo re-imagines the style as an exhilarating\, entertaining performance. Their precise footwork (or zapeto) mimicking the galloping of horses\, the intense drumming of the bombos\, and the whirling of the boleadoras (or lassos) combine for a thrilling dance and music spectacle. Don’t miss Che Malambo’s fiery\, virtuosic dancing as the company debuts on the Rialto stage. \nPerchance single tickets online and in the Rialto Center’s Box Office. Rialto Series Subscriptions for 2016-2017 year are available at the Rialto Center’s Box Office now. \nFree Validated Parking at the 100 Peachtree Parking (formally known as the Equitable Parking Deck). Check the Box Office or Rialto Center’s website for details. \nFree Pre-Show Events: join us an hour before the Series shows to learn more about the performances. \nFollow us on Twitter\, Instagram\, and (new!) SUMMARY:Immigration Seminar: Updates and Early Impacts of Trump Administration
DESCRIPTION:Never before has the issue of immigration been thrust so forcefully onto the forefront of the national public policy agenda. The Trump Administration has already taken unprecedented steps to severely curtail certain categories of immigration\, to ban nationals of numerous countries\, deport huge numbers of immigrants\, and to initiate an extensive review of employment based immigration classifications/visas. Not only the administration has proposed changes but also a significant number of members of Congress\, in both the Senate and the House\, have also proposed significant changes to business and family immigration rules. These changes will affect the full spectrum of employers\, including high-tech\, entertainment\, professional services\, financial technology\, and manufacturing industries. \nThis Executive seminar is being presented for Senior Management and will discuss the scope and impact of these landmark immigration changes\, with specific focus on the anticipated effects on the business community\, and on what options will be available to employers. \nTopics will include: \nExecutive Orders: \n\nEntry Bans and the impact of border enforcement on business and international travel\nIncreased focus on compliance through work site visits and E-verify usage\n\nProposals seeking to: \n\nChange the H1-B visa allocations and cap selection process\nRestrict the use of H-1B\, L-1 and B-1 visas because of alleged impact on US jobs and wages\nLimit practical training programs for F-1 students\nReduce options for green cards\nHow to cope with change and minimize negative impact\n\n\nSponsored By: \nUSA India Business Summit\nFragomen Worldwide\nUS India Business & Research Center\nTaj Hotels\n Bhavya Chaudhry and Associates

SUMMARY:The Trump Effect: The Future of Georgia’s Economic Ties with China and Mexico
DESCRIPTION:If two countries were vilified during last year’s campaign season\, they were China and Mexico. While both have wooed many American factories since the early 1990s\, they’re also two of the state’s top three export destinations\, buying more than $6 billion in Georgia-made goods in 2016. And with a $500 million tire plant in the works\, China is also on the cusp of becoming a major source of foreign manufacturing investment in the state. \nNewly inaugurated President Donald Trump has made clear his intentions to reorient the U.S. trading relationships with both economies\, but will his zero-sum rhetoric translate into new policies? How might changes to NAFTA or a blanket tariff on imported goods impact the state’s outreach to these vital partners? \nFind out at this important conversation hosted by the Cumming-Forsyth Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the accounting firm of Frazier & Deeter. \nTopics & Speakers are to include: \n\nTrade Trends With China and Mexico – Mary Waters\, Deputy Commissioner\, International Trade\, Georgia Department of Economic Development\nForeign Investment Potential for China and Mexico – Jim Blair\, Managing Director\, Navigator Consulting\nTax Opportunities and Considerations – Mike Whitacre\, partner\, Frazier and Deeter\nThe Southeast U.S. Trade Relationship With Mexico – Javier Díaz de León\, Consul General\, Consulado General de Mexico en Atlanta\n\nModerated by Trevor Williams\, managing editor\, Global Atlanta. \nCost is $15 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. \nFor more information\, email Robert Long\, vice president of economic development at the Cumming-Forsyth Chamber of Commerce at rlong@cummingforsythchamber.org. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Faith and Forced Migration: Muslim Humanitarianism in the Age of ISIS
DESCRIPTION:Join LAMP for a lecture by Dr. Abbas Barzegar\, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Co-Director of the Civic Approaches to Conflict Resolution initiative at Georgia State University. Prolonged conflict in the Middle East stemming from political instability and the rise of extremist violence has positioned Muslim aid and development organizations at the nexus of a number of key elements related to conflict resolution and post-conflict stabilization in the short\, medium and long terms. As first-responders with broad and deep grass-roots networks\, Muslim humanitarian groups are uniquely situated to provide relief to the most vulnerable victims of war and forced migration. Unfortunately\, there is a deep mistrust between Muslim NGOs and those based in Western contexts. In partnership with the British Council and The European Commission and through field research\, policy dialogues\, and organizational research\, Dr. Barzegar has explored the reasons behind this impasse and trajectories for resolution over the last two years. In this public talk and discussion\, he will share his findings and insights on how Muslim humanitarian and development agencies are operating in the current political climate of mutual fear and suspicion. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Co-sponsored with Emory University’s Middle East and South Asian Studies Department\, Graduate Division of Religion\, and the Laney Legacy for Moral Leadership Program at Candler School of Theology. Visitor parking is available in the Peavine Parking Lot\, 29 Eagle Row\, Atlanta\, GA 30322.

SUMMARY:Mental Health Care Services of the Adult Syrian Refugee Population in Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:Georgia State University International Center Global Presentation Series \nMental Health Status and Needs Assessment for Mental Health Care Services of the Adult Syrian Refugee Population Resettled in Metropolitan Atlanta: A Cross-sectional Survey \nPresented by Skander M’Zah\, MD\n2017 MPH Candidate\, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University\n2015 Fulbright Scholar \nDr. Skander M‘Zah\, a physician and active participant in the movement known as the Arab Spring\, was called home to Tunisia by the Red Crescent to respond to the emerging refugee crisis on the border with Libya. Thousands of displaced families arrived each day\, fleeing violence at home only to encounter new challenges securing access to basic needs\, including adequate healthcare. Dr. M’zah carried his experience in the camps to his medical residency in family medicine in the public hospital in Tunis. where he created a professional training program for clowns to bring humor and light to disadvantaged children. \nAs a global health student he spent this past summer in Gaziantep\, Turkey\, 20 miles from the Syrian border to participate in the World Health Organization‘s (WHO) emergency response to Northern Syria. Dr. M’Zah was tasked with writing the first mortality and morbidity report for the region since the refugee crisis began\, and he also helped design a health information System to address the gaps in data created by the disparate surveillance tools each organization used. \nInterviewed by Mary Helen O’Connor\, PhD\nSenior Faculty Associate\, Office of International Initiatives\nAssistant Professor\, Dept. of English\, Perimeter College at Georgia State University
