SUMMARY:Brazil Inbound Mission
DESCRIPTION:Join GDEcD and SUSTA to meet one-on-one with qualified Brazilian importers. \nBrazil is one of the leading economies in Latin America and in the world (7th largest). Previous stages of economic growth and development have allowed for the expansion of its middle class. Approximately half of Brazil’s population is considered middle class (about 200 million)\, accounting for a broad consumer base with a considerable degree of purchasing power. At the same time\, Brazilians are changing their tastes and consumption habits for new products\, making the Brazilian food market an interesting option for US exporters. In 2014\, US exports of consumer oriented food products to Brazil totaled $377 million. The Brazilian market for consumer oriented food products is very promising and fortunately it has been less affected than other sectors of the Brazilian economy. \nThis trade mission offers SUSTA companies the opportunity to meet one‐on‐one with key buyers from Brazil in either Chicago\, IL (11/11/17) or Atlanta\, GA (11/13/17) \nFee Includes: \n\nPre-arranged one-on-one meetings with Brazilian buyers\nTravel and accommodations are the responsibility of the company.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Beethoven's "Fidelio"
DESCRIPTION:Join in for November’s ‘A Note on Opera’ lecture when we’ll take a look at Beethoven’s only opera “Fidelio” in commemoration of the 190th anniversary of his passing. \nComposing for the stage caused Beethoven no end of difficulty\, making “Fidelio” his most valued “child.” Composed during Beethoven’s “Middle Period\,” its score is in the same spirit as both his Symphony No. 3 (the “Eroica”) and Symphony No. 5.\n“Fidelio” has inspired generations living under authoritarian regimes. This legacy as the voice of resistance is the basis for most any production. Honoring the opera’s setting in Seville\, currently predominating are productions set in Franco’s Spain.\n“Fidelio” also solidified a trajectory for specifically “German opera”: the redemptive power of conjugal love.\nTo be taught in English by David Kerr\, no pre-existing musical knowledge required\nAdmission: $20.00 members\, $25.00 non-members

SUMMARY:Beyond Hindu and Muslim: The Courtly Ramayanas of North India
DESCRIPTION:In the 17th and 18th centuries\, artists produced gloriously illustrated Ramayanas for both Hindu and Muslim rulers. In a lecture titled Beyond Hindu and Muslim: The Courtly Ramayanas of North India\, Debra Diamond\, curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery\, compares four illustrated Ramayanas and explores the diverse meanings of the epic during this period. She will consider how Sanskrit\, Persian\, and Hindi Ramayana manuscripts variously inflected the epic narrative\, and what they reveal about the mechanisms though which a shared Indo-Islamic elite culture was forged. \nThis lecture will be held in Ackerman Hall on Level Three of the Carlos Museum.
