SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: "Viennese Operetta"
DESCRIPTION:What better way to get into the holidays and ready for the new year than something sparkling! So please join “A Note on Opera” for our first program on “Viennese Operetta.” \nTwo of its best and most well-known examples will be the focus: “Die Fledermaus” [The Bat] by Johann Strauss the Younger and “Die lustige Witwe” [The Merry Widow] by Franz Lehár. Unlike its Parisian cousin\, Viennese Operetta is not satire with a political “bite\,” but rather more escapist\, a reaction to the inexorable decline of Austria-Hungary.\nWe’ll also look at what similarities there are between “opera” and “operetta\,” along with what makes them noticeably different from each other. .\nTo conclude\, we’ll look at the influence of Viennese Operetta on the development of American Musical Theatre.\nTo be taught in English by David Kerr\, no pre-existing musical knowledge required.\nAdmission: $20.00 members\, $25.00 non-members

SUMMARY:Great Decisions 2018 - Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Russia’s Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:The program of 8 lectures is followed by discussion on current international topics at the Dunwoody United Methodist Church on Thursday evenings from January 11 to March 1\, 7:30 – 9:00 PM\n\nThe series is sponsored by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) and is based on a briefing book published annually by the nonpartisan Foreign Policy Association.\nUnder President Vladimir Putin\, Russia is projecting an autocratic model of governance abroad and working to undermine the influence of liberal democracies\, namely along Russia’s historical borderlands. Russia caused an international uproar in 2016\, when it interfered in the U.S. presidential contest. But Putin’s foreign policy toolkit includes other instruments\, from alliances with autocrats to proxy wars with the U.S. in Georgia\, Ukraine and Syria. How does Putin conceive of national interests\, and why do Russian citizens support him? How should the United States respond to Putin’s foreign policy ambitions? \nPlease Register in Advance by mailing the Registration form and payment or by credit card through the GCIV website.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Luncheon With Kenneth W. Stein - The U.S. and the Middle East: Policies Amidst a Fragmenting Region
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER. \nContinuing conflicts and often escalating tensions make the Middle East a region of uncertainties. Syria and Iraq remain in turmoil. Saudi Arab vies for power in the region with Iran. Few can foresee a close to the war in Yemen. The Islamic State has lost nearly everywhere in Iraq and Syria\, but the struggle against IS and is far from over\, as it takes its efforts underground. Moreover\, few see any evident signs of an end to the complexities that beset the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations. \nThe Atlanta Council on International Relations hopes you will be able to join on Wednesday\, January 17\, and hear Emory University Professor Ken Stein\, one of America’s leading authorities on the Middle East\, discuss the problems region confronts. \nLearn more about Dr. Stein here.

SUMMARY:Stories Without an End: Women in African Art
DESCRIPTION:January 18 – April 21\, 2018\nOglethorpe University Museum of Art \nThe exhibition Stories Without an End: Power\, Beauty and Wisdom of Women in African Art of the Mehta Collection includes a selection of 50 classically carved wooden sculptures and masks drawn from the collection of Dileep and Martha Mehta. GMP\, with headquarters in Senegal\, works with elders in West African villages to fight the maltreatment of young girls. This exhibition was developed by Elizabeth H. Peterson\, OUMA director\, and organized by Amanda Hellman\, PhD\, curator of African art\, Michael C. Carlos Museum\, Emory University.
