DESCRIPTION:Join the German American Chambers of Commerce for a delicious breakfast and an engaging discussion on: Developing Advanced Work-Based Higher Education. \nIn both Germany and the United States\, employers search for new strategies to recruit and train people in times of a dynamically evolving economy and rising educational expectations. In this context\, we observe the proliferation of work-based higher education programs in both countries. This development challenges the common classification found in the political economy and educational policy literature that distinguishes between collectively governed dual apprenticeships in Germany and market-driven on-the-job training in the US. \nThis presentation proposes: an alternative that identifies significant similarities in the governance mode of work-based higher education across the two countries. Based on expert interviews and document analysis\, this discussion focuses on complex multi-actor governance at the nexus of vocational training and higher education and explores consequences for contemporary policy-making in advanced skill formation.

While we may soon fly to Mars\, we oftentimes find it difficult to safely cross the street. An apparent paradox\, considering how crucial transportation is to our personal and economic well-being. We want to move freely from one place to another\, and we want the same for the goods we need or desire. However\, transportation is also a major contributor to climate change. It recently surpassed electricity generation to become the biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.\nFrank Wefering will explore the latest transportation trends\, accounting for the rapid and fundamental changes currently observed in the field\, especially in relation to mobility\, accessibility\, and road safety in cities. He will also discuss the crucial importance of sustainable transportation modes\, such as walking\, cycling and public transit for today’s climate conscious\, healthy and livable cities. Based on his experience from Europe and the United States\, he will discuss urban mobility planning solutions that can make a true difference in making our cities more sustainable. \nAbout Frank Wefering\nFrank Wefering earned his German diploma degree in economics at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (’94) and his Master of Economics at North Carolina State University (´97). Mr. Wefering is a consultant with more than 20 years of international experience in sustainable development research and implementation. He specializes in the application of sustainability principles to transportation and urban mobility projects.\nIn early 2017\, Frank Wefering became the first Director of Sustainability at Greenman-Pedersen\, Inc. (GPI)\, a New York-based engineering consulting firm with 1\,500 employees across the United States. He is responsible for developing a GPI service line centered on sustainability planning and transportation. Mr. Wefering is also the founder and former CEO of Changing Track\, LLC in New York and\, for more than 14 years\, was a senior consultant at Rupprecht Consult in Cologne\, Germany. He served as advisor to the United Nations\, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ)\, the European Commission and cities worldwide on sustainable transportation and integrated planning.

During her address\, she will present hers and the UN’s thoughts on issues surrounding weapons of mass destruction and other strategic weapons\, conventional weapons and their impacts on civilians\, and on future technologies and weapons systems. Come listen to Ms. Nakamitsu as she provides analysis of the current international security situation and provides more detail on specific policies. \nMs. Izumi Nakamitsu assumed her position as Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs on 1 May 2017. Prior to taking on this post\, Ms. Nakamitsu served as Assistant Administrator of the Crisis Response Unit at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 2014.

DESCRIPTION:“What if You Were in my Shoes” Photo Exhibition\nAtlantic Institute in partnership with Set Them Free would like to invite you to the “What if You Were in My Shoes” photo exhibition at Milton Public Library. \nAbout Set Them Free and the background of the Exhibition. \nSet Them Free is an initiative that is launched by several civil society organizations working in collaboration to promote the rights of women and children in Turkey. Platform’s mission is to raise awareness on the tens of thousands of women and 668 babies\, who have been arbitrarily jailed in Turkey following the failed coup attempt of July 2016. The platform gives voice to the stories of these women and babies in jail\, as well as to the ones who have been forced to live in exile outside of Turkey. \nAfter the failed coup attempt of July 2017 in Turkey\, there has been a tremendous rise of human rights violations. Hundreds of thousands of public officers\, academicians\, journalists\, teachers\, civil servants are dismissed\, along with thousands of arbitrary detentions with groundless allegations. Currently there are 9\,700 women in jails along with 665 children\, whose access to health care is not allowed in jails. The social labelling and the witch-hunt in Turkey forced so many families to a mandatory exile to seek a better future. \nThe exhibition organized by the Set Them Free Atlanta coordinators aims to raise awareness on these tragic forced-migration stories from Turkey. More than 50 photos and their background stories will be displayed along with an introductory video.
