SUMMARY:Nose-to-Nose with Fidel Castro
DESCRIPTION:When Fidel Castro first publically met Ambassador Vicki Huddleston in 1991\, in an attempt to embarrass her\, he asked if she was someone’s wife. After introducing herself as the Department Director of Cuban Affairs\, he responded\, “Oh! I thought I was!” \nThis theatrical display laid the foundation for U.S.-Cuba diplomatic discourse: one of the tensest relationships in the world and a daunting challenge for the then-junior officer and first U.S. diplomat to officially negotiate with the Cuban regime. \nHuddleston recounts her experiences in openly hostile Cuba in her book Our Woman in Havana. Join us for a discussion and book signing with Ambassador Vicki Huddleston and hear what it was like to go nose to nose with Fidel Castro\, knowing that every action could yield immense consequences for Cuba and for the United States\, and hear her assessment of current U.S. policy toward Cuba.

SUMMARY:The Island of My Love -- 'Cuba Amor' Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join the Department of Museums\, Archives & Rare Books\, in partnership with the KSU School of Art and Design\, the Division of Global Affairs\, and Western Kentucky University\, for the opening reception of The Island of My Love\, or Cuba Amor. \nThis exhibit aims to illustrate the stories\, images\, and transcultural synergy between the peoples of the United States and Cuba. The exhibit has three components that reflect the connections between place\, identity\, and artistic expression: \n\nWork by Cuban artists express “transculturation\,” a term coined by anthropologist Fernando Ortiz Fernándiz that reflects how identity crosses cultural lines.\nWorks by children enrolled in an afterschool enrichment program\, La Clase Mágica\, investigate how art serves as a catalyst for personal and social transformation.\nThe String Project\, created by photographers Chelsea and Mariano Cortez\, invites visitors to take photographs clutching the same white rope in different surroundings.\n\nLike a drop of water that flows into a river\, creative community collaborations between artists\, educators\, and students can help us imagine a better world. The exhibition will be on view at Kennesaw State University during the fall 2019 semester as part of our “Year of Cuba” program. We invite you to explore Cuba Amor\, and meet the people of Cuba face to face.

SUMMARY:Macht der Gefühle Exhibition and Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Our politics are increasingly driven by emotions\, so it would seem. We are living in an age of permanent agitation. Facts are being called into question by perceived truths. Radicals of every description are attracting more and more attention with simple answers to complex questions. The political center often does not know how to deal with heated emotions. It is characterized by the political culture of the old Federal Republic\, where the need for sobriety prevailed. \nThis is where the exhibition entitled The Power of Emotions. Germany 19 | 19 comes in\, which has been created by UTE and Bettina Frevert for the “Remembrance\, Responsibility and Future” Foundation (EVZ) and the Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany. The exhibition takes an emotional-historical perspective to look back at the last 100 years and illustrates the political and social impact of fear\, hope\, love\, and rage. \nThe Power of Emotions. Germany 19 | 19 takes present-day manifestations of 20 emotions as a starting point and shows how these have developed during the 20th century: conjunctures\, change\, and continuities. In the 2019 year of remembrance\, the exhibition will demonstrate continuities and gaps in the emotions that have shaped the last 100 years\, the intensity of which is now presenting a challenge for politics and society. \nDr. Frevert will join on Thursday\, September 19\, and give a presentation accompanying the poster exhibition. Light refreshments will be served. \nThe event is free to attend\, but please register in advance.

SUMMARY:Germanic Language & Dialect Series: Schwäbisch
DESCRIPTION:German leaners across the globe have had the experience of traveling abroad and realizing the German they learned in the classroom is not the German they heard in Europe. Why is that? There are numerous dialects throughout all of the German-speaking countries\, and even within a variety there can be several other subcategories. This Germanic Language and Dialect Series will present derivatives of the standard variety also known as “Hochdeutsch.” Native speakers and language experts will provide background information\, historical context\, and numerous examples. It will be a fun\, interactive afternoon as each session will explore a new dialect in Germany\, Austria\, and Switzerland.
