SUMMARY:The Forum's 12th Annual Conference - Navigating the Intersections: The Cultures of Education Abroad
DESCRIPTION:Education abroad is a field of intersections. In every program\, different national identities\, learning models\, values\, disciplines\, languages\, traditions\, institutions and organizations encounter each other in distinctive ways that create the unique cultures of education abroad. Education abroad lives and thrives at the intersections of these ideas and realities. \nHow do these intersections shape the various cultures that are unique to education abroad? How\, in turn\, do these cultures influence the field and the profession? What are the characteristics needed to navigate through these intersections as an education abroad organization and as a professional? \nHow do these intersections create opportunities for student learning? What are the challenges for education abroad organizations and professionals to help students navigate the intersections? Should education abroad resolve or reject the tensions that intersections may create? \nThe Forum’s 12th Annual Conference seeks to address these and other questions unique to education abroad.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Charles Gounod's "Faust"
DESCRIPTION:Join Goethe for their latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as they look at Charles Gounod’s “Faust.”\n From its 1859 premiere in Paris until the First World War\, Gounod’s adaptation of Goethe’s “Faust” was the most popular opera in the world. The Metropolitan Opera performed it so often that its opera house was nicknamed the “Faustspielhaus.” Even during the following years when it was infrequently performed\, its music continued to be popular; for those who have never “seen” this opera\, most have still unknowingly “heard” it. Fortunately it is being revived more and more\, with contemporary audiences appreciating what Charles Dickens described as “a sad and noble tale\, sadly and nobly told.” \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required. \nPlease use the link below to register in advance for this course session and receive a discounted rate. \nAdmission: Advance by one week prior: $10 for Goethe-Zentrum/Alliance Française d’Atlanta members; $20 for non-members\, At the Door: $15 Members\, $25 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Intercultural Atlanta Series: Latinas - Meet the Decision Makers
DESCRIPTION:The largest and fastest-growing group of immigrants in Georgia in the last decades are Latino or Hispanic\, a term that is used interchangeably to refer to persons that speak Spanish\, most of whom are Latin American. Latino growth has increased considerably since the 80’s\, when Georgia’s Latino population was approximately 61\,000 (1% of the total state population). Today\, the Latinos/Hispanic in Georgia has decreased to about 853\,689 (8% of the population according to U.S Census Bureau year 2015). Although the Latino population in Georgia comes mainly from Mexico there is a representation from every nation in North\, Central\, and South America which has dramatically transformed Georgia’s culture\, economy\, and self-image. \nThus\, what better place to have this talk about Latinos than in the Mexican General Consulate in Atlanta? Current facts & numbers; How does the future look and who are the decision makers?\nYo Soy Mujer\, one of a strongest Georgia initiatives dedicated to empowering Latino women.\nIntercultural reflections\n\nGuest Speakers:\n Gigi Pedraza\, YoSoyM Co-Founder & Managing Partner\n Social entrepreneur\, business manager\, hospitality professional and community advocate. Before YoSoyM\, Gigi consulted with Latino serving non-profits and founded Inca Kids\, a fair trade wholesaler and retailer of accessories and toys handcrafted by Hispanic women. \nJudith Martínez\, YoSoyM Co-Founder & Managing Partner\n Emmy award winner journalist\, creative director and entrepreneur. Before YoSoyM\, she was News Director and Anchor at Telemundo Atlanta\, she is the former publisher and co-founder of Atlanta Latino\, the first bilingual newspaper in Georgia. \n Parking:\n Parking lot in the back of the Consulate.
