SUMMARY:Steffen Thomas: Rock & Chisel Film Premiere on Georgia Public Broadcasting
DESCRIPTION:Steffen Thomas Museum of Art is proud to announce the live airing of the film\, Steffen Thomas: Rock & Chisel\, February 13th at 10:00 p.m. on Georgia Public Broadcasting.\nThe film features never-before-seen archival footage of German-American artist Steffen Thomas at work and at play. The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art has shared their vast archive with Milk Crate Films’ director\, Jesse Stephen Freeman\, who has been working on the project for four years. The result is a fascinating dive into the life of this talented\, complicated artist. \nSee the home Thomas built stone-by-stone\, the monumental public pieces around the country\, the colorful mosaics and oil paintings\, and the legendary Monument to the Brotherhood of Mankind\, a massive work of art that required visitors to enter into a sunken sanctuary to experience. It was inside this work that Thomas carved his credo\, “This world is too small for less than brotherhood\, too dangerous for less than truth.” \nThe original score for Steffen Thomas: Rock & Chisel is composed by David Kirkland Garner and performed by Phillip Bush (piano) and Claire Bryant (cello). Michael Bruno is the Director of Photography and the film was edited by Will Eccleston for Kinetiscape Films. It’s directed by Jesse Stephen Freeman for Milk Crate Films. \nSee film trailer here. \nSee Georgia Public Broadcasting airing schedule here.

SUMMARY:Black History Month 2023 - The Power of Storytelling (Trip to Georgia Writers Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Every February\, Black History Month recognizes the accomplishments\, contributions\, and legacy of African Americans in U.S. history and society\, from activists and civil rights pioneers to leaders in business\, politics\, academia\, culture\, and more. \nThe Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta regularly engages in the Black History Month celebrations to honor the importance of African Americans in shaping the American nation. This year\, we want to highlight the transformative power of storytelling and its potential to raise awareness and bring about change for a social cause. Throughout human history\, stories and narratives have been an essential way of connecting with an audience and appealing to hearts and minds. They enable us to understand a different experience of the world\, and thus enhance our empathy. In the struggle for social justice and equality\, storytelling was\, and still is\, of particular importance to the history of Black people. \nIn this context\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta organizes a field trip to the Georgia Writers Museum in Eatonton\, GA\, on February 18\, 2023\, 10am-5pm EST. Hop on the bus (at Atlanta’s Arts Center MARTA station) and visit the hometown of Joel Chandler Harris\, who compiled and adapted African American folktales (Uncle Remus stories)\, and Alice Walker\, who is known as one of the most distinguished African American writers of our time. The Georgia Writers Museum in Eatonton will open its doors and take visitors on a guided tour offering a glimpse of the state’s rich African American literary heritage. \nThe group will depart from Atlanta at 10am and return around 5pm. The ticket cost of $40 includes a complimentary lunch\, the bus ride\, and the guided literary tour.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Adam Brookes\, Author of Fragile Cargo
DESCRIPTION:“Wars not only put individual lives at risk\, but entire cultures. From Ukraine to Iraq to Afghanistan\, we’ve grown used to seeing images of looted museums\, obliterated landmarks\, and broken artifacts. The theft of important works of art in Western Europe by the Nazis during World War II has been widely documented. Less well-known—and told here for the first time in English—is the astounding true story of the efforts in China to protect one of the greatest art collections in the world from almost certain destruction.” \nIn Fragile Cargo: The World War II Race to Save the Treasures of the Forbidden City\, journalist Adam Brookes gives readers the gripping true story of the bold and determined museum curators who saved the priceless treasures of China’s Forbidden City in the years leading up to World War II and beyond. \nAbout the Author\nAdam Brookes was born in Canada and grew up in the United Kingdom. For many years he was a journalist for BBC News\, working as a correspondent in Beijing\, as well as in Indonesia and the United States. He lives in Takoma Park\, Maryland.

SUMMARY:Black History Month 2023 - The Power of Storytelling (Virtual Book Discussion)
\nIn this context\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta organizes a virtual book discussion on the book “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel” on February 23\, 2023\, 1pm-2pm EST. \nIn collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta will virtually host Fork Burke (Editor) and Myriam Diarra (Editor) who\, in conversation with Dr. Stephane Dunn\, will discuss their latest publication “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel”. They will provide an insider look into their book which explores the historical and contemporary lived experiences of Black women from the town of Biel/Bienne [Switzerland]. In addition to shedding light on this extraordinary part of the global Black diaspora\, Fork Burke and Myriam Diarra will speak on the importance of storytelling and share ideas on the legacy writing process that preserves the histories of the Black diaspora for future generations.

SUMMARY:FILM: Let Us Die
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of the anniversary of the Russian invasion in Ukraine\, join Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta for the exclusive screening of “Let us Die”. \nAs a young man in the late 1980s\, Tim Mallad\, purchased an old\, beaten-up desk in Dallas. Inside\, he found an old British Passport\, black and white photographs\, a letter from Tel Aviv\, international air mail from the 1950s\, and a collection of fragile letters that were written in German at the end of World War II. This finding is the unlikely beginning of a story that ultimately led into the darkness of war crimes in the city of Neustrelitz at the time of Germany’s liberation from the Nazi regime – and that led Frank Pringham\, great grandnephew of Thomas Mann\, into a chapter of his family history previously unknown. \nGeothe-Zentrum welcomes Mr. Frank Pringham to join for the showing of the documentary\, inaugurating the new screening equipment at the new center. \nGeneral Public: $10 per person\nMembers: FREE

SUMMARY:2023 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series – Economic Warfare
DESCRIPTION:The annual 2023 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 2 – March 23\, 2023 at 7:30 PM. There is a fee to register for the virtual lecture series\, and registration is required to receive the event link. \nFeb. 23\, 2023\, Topic: Economic Warfare\nWaging economic warfare consists of a variety of measures from implementing sanctions to fomenting labor strikes. Such tools are utilized by states to hinder their enemies\, and in the case of the United States have been used as far back as the early 19th century. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022\, economic warfare has been the main means for the west to challenge Russia. How effective will these sanctions be at convincing Russia to cease its war? \nSpeaker: Dr. Stephen Collins\, Kennesaw State University \nPlease note\, topics and speakers are subject to change dates. \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year.
