SUMMARY:ACIR Presents Dr. Polina Sinovets: Russian Strategic Culture and Nuclear Weapons
DESCRIPTION:According to Fritz Ermarth\, “Traditional Russian strategic culture – that of Imperial Russia from its emergence as a state in the middle of the last millennium through most of the existence of the Soviet Union into the late 1980s – has been one of the most martial and militarized such cultures in history\, rivaling\, if not exceeding\, those of Prussia\, Imperial and Nazi Germany\, and Imperial Japan in this respect. Starting sometime in the 1970s\, accelerating in the 1980s\, dramatically so in the years after the collapse of the USSR\, conditions have arisen which open the possibility of changing this nature—significantly “demilitarizing Russian strategic culture—while also leaving open the possibility of a revival or reassertion of traditional\, highly militarized\, Russian strategic culture.” Are we seeing in Putin’s Russia a return to traditional Russian strategic cultural as Russia reasserts itself in Ukraine and elsewhere in Eastern Europe\, and modernizes it nuclear forces?\n\nJoin the Atlanta Council on International Relations for the luncheon and discussion with Dr. Polina Sinovets\, an associate professor in the international relations department at Odessa I. Mechnikov National University\, Ukraine.

SUMMARY:2018 U.S.-China Young Scholars Forum
DESCRIPTION:Two evolving events may impact global peace and prosperity in the coming years. First\, President Donald Trump is drastically changing America’s domestic and foreign policies under the slogan “Make America Great Again.” Second\, President Xi Jinping has launched a set of policies that he similarly claims will make China great again. Both leaders are driven by nationalism\, which has been magnified by both conventional and new media. In fact\, the mix of nationalism and media has fundamentally altered the dynamics and equilibrium of the bilateral relations between the US and China. The concern that the interests of the two nations may be on a collision course has been greatly enhanced by President Xi’s report at the National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in October and the release of the Trump Administration’s 2018 National Security Strategy in December 2017. \nOn January 30\, 16 young scholars from China and the US will present their findings on how nationalism and the media are influencing bilateral relations. On January 31 at 4 p.m.\, five well-known Chinese and American opinion makers will engage each other in a debate on whether the US and China are adversaries and what can be done to reduce misconception and hostility between Washington and Beijing. Many say this relationship is too big to fail; others say it is too big and complex to manage. We will see what these scholars say about this most consequential relationship in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:U.S. China Policy under Trump
DESCRIPTION:A Risen China is an unprecedented challenge to American power and principles. Any president would have a hard time responding effectively to Beijing’s ambitions. The difficulty is compounded by the current political crisis\, in which the post-WWII consensus about the interests and values that drive American foreign policy has been lost. China is taking advantage of American confusion in predictable ways that threaten global liberal practices. Does it matter? Can Americans live as they wish if the U.S. is no longer the world’s most consequential nation? \nPresentation by: \nRobert Daly\, director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson Center and a former US Foreign Service officer. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Academic Freedom and Critical Thinking as Transnational Rights
DESCRIPTION:While students and scholars in North America and western Europe have taken the right to academic freedom for granted\, scholars in other parts of the world are often in more precarious positions. Professor Hoodfar’s own recent arrest\, followed by 112 days in Iran’s Evin Prison on charges of “researching and dabbling in feminism\,” has made her sharply aware of the extent to which scholars\, and the ideal of academic freedom are in danger globally. There is an urgent need to advocate for academic freedom as a transnational right.

It will be an educational and exhilarating experience you won’t want to miss! \nFPL Food\, LLC is a stealthy-but-successful beef-processing firm.\nSince 2004\, FPL Food LLC has grown quickly\, from two plants in Augusta\, Ga.\, employing 400 people\, to four facilities in Georgia and South Carolina\, with upwards of 800 employees and annual revenues topping $350 million. The company was founded by Frenchman François Léger\, as a harvesting plant and manufacturer of boxed beef and ground-beef products.\nToday\, FPL Foods is the largest\, privately owned\, vertically integrated beef company in the Southeast.\nFrom the beginning\, FPL Foods was the only beef company that adopted a policy of not allowing any meat from downer cattle into the supply chain.\nFPL was the first slaughtering facility in the US to utilize remote video auditing at its plant in Augusta\, to ensure animal-welfare standards were being met. The company was also an early adopter of DNA traceability technology as a food-safety measure starting about four years ago. Today\, its beef products are 100-percent DNA traceable.
