SUMMARY:"Put yourself in my shoes": Writing\, Home\, and Displacement
DESCRIPTION:The news is full of images and stories of people having to flee their homes because of war\, hunger\, or disease. Many of us have normalized the sight to such an extent that we barely notice it anymore. But what does it feel like to actually have to leave your home and everything – also often everyone – you love and care about behind? What would it feel like for all of us\, had we been forced to abandon our place of origin\, without the choice of going back? \n\n\n\nIn this writing workshop\, “Put yourself in my shoes”: Writing\, Home\, and Displacement\, participants will be led by Nicoletta Demetriou\, who will draw from her experience as a “refugee child\,” and as an ethnographer of the refugee condition\, to ask participants\, through a series of prompts and texts\, to reflect on these difficult issues\, put themselves in the shoes of a displaced person\, and write about it. \n\n\n\nNicoletta – an ethnomusicologist\, singer\, and writing coach from Cyprus – has been teaching similar writing workshops for Greek and Turkish Cypriots walking and writing together in Nicosia’s buffer zone for the past ten years. Writing becomes a means for people to express their feelings\, tell their story (first to themselves\, on the page\, and then to others)\, be heard\, but also listen to the stories of others. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited and registration is required. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The workshop will be held in the Board Room. \n\n\n\nFee: $30 for members\, $40 for nonmembers\, Free for Emory students.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor:  \n\n\n\nNicoletta Demetriou was born and raised in Nicosia\, the divided capital of Cyprus. She studied music in Thessaloniki\, Vienna\, and London\, obtaining a PhD in Ethnomusicology from SOAS\, University of London. She subsequently studied for an MA in Life Writing at the University of East Anglia\, and has since combined her passion for music and writing in her teaching. From 2012 to 2019 she was research fellow in ethnomusicology and life writing at Wolfson College\, Oxford\, and tutor in narrative non-fiction on Oxford’s postgraduate program in Creative Writing. In 2017 she was a Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at Stockton University\, NJ\, and in 2019 a Visiting Fellow at the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton. Since 2022\, she has been director of Cyprus Music Archive\, The Writing Room (a community writing space in Nicosia)\, and Topos Retreat (a writing retreat on the mountains of Cyprus). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:CIBER GROW Connect - Fireside Chat & Networking
DESCRIPTION:The GROW Connect at Georgia State University is an annual gathering of leading business professionals and academic experts\, fostering a thought-provoking dialogue on the evolving landscape of sustainability\, ethics\, and ESG (Environmental\, Social\, and Governance) in international business. \n\n\n\nThis year\, the symposium will explore the intersection of geopolitics\, corporate sustainability\, and accountability\, examining how businesses navigate ethical challenges\, regulatory shifts\, and global market disruptions. A key objective is to explore how these dynamics influence corporate decision-making and sustainability efforts\, while strengthening collaboration between industry and academia. \n\n\n\nGUEST SPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nANU PIDURU \n\n\n\nAnu Piduru is the Senior Director of Sustainability at Carter’s\, the largest branded marketer in North America of baby and children’s apparel. She leads Carter’s environmental sustainability strategy and also heads the company’s ESG reporting efforts. Over the course of Anu’s nearly 20-year career\, she has amassed sustainability and environmental compliance experience in the aviation and retail industries\, including waste reduction and management and decarbonization. Prior to her role at Carter’s\, she worked in sustainability and environmental compliance for Delta Air Lines for nearly 15 years. She has served her local community as a board member for organizations focused on water resource preservation and landfill diversion. She is currently on the board for Atlanta’s LiveThrive organization\, which owns and operates the Centers for Hard to Recycle Materials\, and she serves on the Executive Committee for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night walk in Atlanta. Anu earned her BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and has been dedicated to the environment from a young age. \n\n\n\nJORDAN SIEGEL \n\n\n\nJordan Siegel is a Professor of Strategy at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Professor Siegel is also a Research Fellow at the William Davidson Institute and an Associate-in-Research at the Harvard Korea Institute of the Harvard Asia Center. \n\n\n\nProfessor Siegel specializes in the study of how companies gain competitive advantage through their global strategy. Professor Siegel finds that there are numerous opportunities for companies to attain superior sustainable corporate performance through creative strategies for corporate governance and human resource management. \n\n\n\nA set of studies written by Professor Siegel explores how companies borrow\, leverage\, and arbitrage institutions across borders as a means of attaining long-term competitive advantage. By institutions Professor Siegel refers to the formal and informal rules of the game that affect companies’ competitive behavior and resource access. Formal institutions include corporate\, securities\, and bankruptcy law; informal institutions include a society’s cultural stance toward meritocracy and egalitarianism. (While a thorough list of rules of the game might be near-infinite\, Professor Siegel concentrates on those that directly affect governance of companies.) The main idea is that companies—even single-country-focused companies—exhibit a surprising ability to attain competitive advantage via their choices of other countries’ institutions. \n\n\n\nAnother set of studies written by Professor Siegel and his coauthors shows that companies can make their approach to the labor market a core component of their competitive advantage. The goal has been to examine whether the hiring and promotion of female managers leads to improved corporate performance\, whether foreign multinationals disproportionately engage in the hiring and promotion of female managers\, and whether foreign multinationals act differently in the hiring and promotion of senior female managers in Japan and South Korea compared to what they do at home. Overall\, the results show that foreign multinationals have been the most active in both Japan and South Korea in exploiting the social bias and hiring and promoting women to senior management positions. Professor Siegel and his coauthors argue based on panel analysis with company fixed effects\, and based on systematically ruling out alternative explanations\, that the aggressive application of this outsider’s advantage has led to demonstrable improvements in performance over time for foreign multinationals in Japan and South Korea. Moreover\, this source of competitive advantage is not short-lived\, but appears to be as much as a decade-long opportunity. \n\n\n\nProfessor Siegel’s work has been published in Management Science\, Administrative Science Quarterly\, the Strategic Management Journal\, Organization Science\, the Journal of Financial Economics\, the Review of Financial Studies\, the Journal of Comparative Economics\, and the Journal of Economic Literature. \n\n\n\nSEBASTIAN VAN DER VEGT \n\n\n\nSebastian Van Der Vegt is a global strategist and founding partner at WMBV Consulting\, with over two decades of experience helping organizations expand across international markets. A former Coca-Cola executive and United Nations professional\, he has led award-winning initiatives in sustainability\, corporate communications\, and brand strategy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:'From Nuclear Modernization to the Stone Age' - Luncheon Panel With the Daisy Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear weapons have not been used since the US attacks on Japan in August 1945. As global tensions continue to rise\, analysts believe we are closer to nuclear war than at any time since—the famous ‘Doomsday Clock’ now stands at 89 seconds to midnight. The United States\, China\, and Russia are all currently modernizing and increasing the size of their nuclear arsenals\, with the US on track to spend over $1.5 billion on the project.  \n\n\n\nThere are already over 12\,000 nuclear weapons in the world\, according to Stockholm International Peace Research’s (SIPRI) 2024 estimates—almost 90% are possessed by the US and Russia alone. Nuclear modernization and expansion will almost certainly lead to destabilizing arms races. When combined with numerous dangerous regional conflicts around the world\, modernization could easily escalate future conflicts by legitimizing the limited use of nuclear weapons.  \n\n\n\nThis panel features three experts from Daisy Alliance\, an Atlanta based nuclear disarmament advocacy organization\, who will discuss the impacts of the US nuclear modernization program. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nGregory Hall\, Executive Director\, will discuss nuclear modernization and proliferation issues in the context of politics among the great powers and regional powers.  \n\n\n\nHolly Lindamood\, Associate Director\, will examine nuclear modernization through the lens of human security\, focusing on the impacts to economic\, heath\, environmental\, and social security.  \n\n\n\nChuck Powell\, Board Member\, will discuss various efforts over time at nuclear modernization and attendant financial\, technical\, and political issues.  \n\n\n\nYou Must Register to Attend  \n\n\n\nRegistration Closes Friday\, April 4th\, at 10 am \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Democracy and Authoritarianism in Pakistan’s Electoral Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Atlanta hosts Arif Alvi\, MD\, former President of Pakistan\, for an intimate dialogue about the state of democracy in the country with the world’s 5th largest population. \n\n\n\nPakistan’s democratic development and political stability continue to face significant challenges due to entrenched military interests within the government and widespread public distrust in the electoral process. The 2024 elections were particularly problematic\, with substantial delays in the release of official results\, leading to widespread allegations of rigging and vote manipulation. Election periods are often marred by violence and security threats\, including attacks by militant groups like the Islamic State targeting election offices. The political landscape remains highly volatile\, marked by frequent legal disputes and the arrest of prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Imran Khan\, which has sparked widespread protests and further instability. Additionally\, Pakistan’s military has increasingly consolidated its control over government leaders and functions\, further complicating efforts to achieve democratic governance and political stability.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Written in the Waters: A Conversation with National Geographic Explorer in Residence Tara Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Join Tara Roberts\, National Geographic Explorer in Residence\, for an unforgettable evening as she discusses her powerful memoir\, Written in the Waters: A Memoir of History\, Home\, and Belonging.  \n\n\n\nWhen National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Tara Roberts first saw a photograph at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture depicting the underwater archaeology group Diving With a Purpose\, it called out to her. Roberts joined them—and started on a path of discovery more challenging and personal than she could ever have imagined. From the coasts of Senegal and South Africa to the waters of St. Croix and beyond\, she confronted the Middle Passage’s harrowing history while uncovering her roots and exploring what it means to belong.  \n\n\n\nInterweaving deeply personal storytelling with historical insight\, Roberts reflects on the resilience of the human spirit\, the importance of remembering the past\, and the shared threads that connect us all. Her journey\, also captured in the podcast Into the Depths\, offers a rare and intimate look at history\, identity\, and discovery.  \n\n\n\nRoberts is the first Black female explorer ever to be featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine. She was named the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year in 2022 and a Fellow at the MIT Open Documentary Lab in 2019. She spent her early career years working as an editor for women and teen magazines like Essence and CosmoGirl.  \n\n\n\nRoberts will appear in conversation with another of Atlanta’s own Tayari Jones\, award-winning author of “An American Marriage.”  \n\n\n\nTickets are $35 for the general public and include a pre-signed book. Tickets are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend the event\, your ticket still entitles you to a signed copy of the book; A Cappella Books will hold your book for one month from the event date\, and you may pick it up in-store at 208 Haralson Ave. NE.
