SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel“
DESCRIPTION:Join the Goethe-Zentrum for our latest lecture in their “A Note on Opera” series as they look at Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.“ \nWhat Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker“ is to ballet\, Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” is to opera. Since its Weimar premiere on December 23\, 1893\, this opera has always been linked to the Christmas season. Musically it owes a great debt to Wagner\, but without the “heaviness” that often characterizes Wagner’s scores. Humperdinck’s sumptuous creation seems to be suffused rather with light and air. “Hänsel und Gretel” is a “Märchenoper” [fairy tale opera] and returns\, even if only briefly\, German opera to its early days of “The Magic Flute\,” “Der Freischütz\,” and “The Flying Dutchman.” And like Gershwin did with “Porgy and Bess” in the 1930s\, Humperdinck composed in “Hänsel” music that fools us into believing its folk music\, though it actually is not. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required. \nPlease use the link below to register in advance for this course session and receive a discounted rate.

SUMMARY:Breakfast & Discussion with Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert
DESCRIPTION:“The Economic Chances of an Energy Transition” \nDiscussion with Dr. Claudia Kemfert focused on the German Energy Transition.\nThe German energy transition is now in progress. In 40 years\, electricity generation\, which for the most part\, is currently based on fossil fuels such as coal and gas\, will be almost entirely converted to renewable energy sources. Presently\, the share of electricity produced from renewables is about 23 percent\, which is slightly more than nuclear power (18 percent). Further\, as part of the energy transition\, a commitment has been made to phase out nuclear power early: the remaining nuclear reactors will be decommissioned by 2022. The energy transition is also focused on improving energy efficiency\, both in building the energy sector and to achieve more sustainable mobility. The energy transition is designed to facilitate the development of a sustainable energy supply. There will be no blackouts\, provided that sufficient funds are invested in improving energy efficiency\, optimizing the electricity grid management system\, expanding the grid and storage capacity\, and also in gas-fired reserve power plants during the transitional period. Only a slight increase in the price of electricity is anticipated since there are key factors exerting both a downward and an upward effect on prices. Although significant investment is required\, this will\, in turn\, create added value and employment\, however. Since Germany has sufficient plant\, infrastructure\, and power plant engineering and construction expertise\, the German economy is in a better position than any other to profit from the energy transition\, the boom in renewable energy\, new power plants\, improvements in energy efficiency\, and sustainable urban development and mobility. The energy transition is expected to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and thus undoubtedly bring more economic opportunities than risks.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail”
DESCRIPTION:Join in for the Goethe-Zentrum’s latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as they look at Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail.” \nWith this comic 1782 work\, Mozart integrated characteristics of 18th-century opera with the German art form of “Singspiel” [a theatrical piece with singing]. Mozart’s goal was to create “German opera\,” distinct from its Italian and French counterparts. And by “German opera\,” it meant more than just having the text in the German language. \nThis lecture will explain what is meant by “German opera\,” then analyze how “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” fits into the genre. In addition\, it will look at how this work is emblematic of late 18th-century Imperial Vienna. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required. \nAdmission: $15.00 members\, $25.00 non-members.\nPlease use the link below to register in advance for this event.

SUMMARY:Year of Russia: Russia's Domestic Politics
DESCRIPTION:Media often report that Vladimir Putin is highly popular as president of Russia\, but why does this matter if he is a dictator\, as media also often report? In fact\, Russia’s political system is more complex than simple notions of “dictatorship” or “democracy” would have it\, and public opinion is key to the regime’s stability. Survey research\, including certain experimental methods\, can be used to understand the sources of Putin’s support and the prospects for it to continue\, including the surge that Putin reaped after Russia annexed Crimea. \nSpeaker: Henry Hale \nHenry E. Hale is Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University (GW) and the author of Patronal Politics: Eurasian Regime Dynamics in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge\, 2015). Specializing on political regimes\, ethnic politics\, and post-Soviet politics\, his previous work has won two awards from the American Political Science Association\, including one for his book Why Not Parties in Russia (Cambridge\, 2006). During 2009-12\, he was director of the Institute for European\, Russian\, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs\, and he is currently editorial board chair of Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization.
