SUMMARY:Europe's Nuclear Future: Rethinking Transatlantic Deterrence
DESCRIPTION:Join the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s Eurasia Program for a discussion on Europe’s new nuclear deterrence. \n\n\n\nOn March 2\, French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a landmark update to France’s nuclear strategy\, announcing that France would increase its nuclear arsenal and deepen cooperation with Germany and other European states to deter attacks. The updated nuclear doctrine includes joint exercises between French nuclear forces and the forces of other European states and temporarily moving some nuclear warheads outside of France. While Macron did not explicitly commit to extended deterrence\, a pledge to extend a nuclear umbrella over its allies\, this represents a significant doctrinal change to French nuclear policy. \n\n\n\nThis announcement reflects dramatic shifts in the Transatlantic security relationship as the United States continues to retreat from its role as Europe’s primary security provider and Europe moves towards “strategic autonomy.” Join Emily Holland for a conversation with Astrid Chevreuil and Dr. Alex Bollfrass on the implications of this announcement for France\, Germany\, and European and transatlantic security. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:A Luncheon and Discussion on: "The World Cup 2026 in Atlanta: Can it Rise Above Domestic and Geopolitics?" with CNN International Anchor Don Riddell
DESCRIPTION:The FIFA World Cup is returning to the United States\, in a tournament sprawling across three continents and 16 cities\, Atlanta is going to be front and center of the action. In every way\, FIFA’s flagship tournament is bigger than ever before\, a record 48 teams will now compete for the most coveted sporting trophy on the planet. However\, the sport’s world governing body is also now entangled in world politics in a manner that threatens to undercut its own mantra that “football should take center stage.” \n\n\n\nJoin the Atlanta Council of International Relations for a luncheon to discuss the growth of the World Cup from modest beginnings almost a century ago to the behemoth it has become today. Learn why the game has the potential to unite people globally in ways that the United States has not yet truly experienced with football\, while highlighting how this tournament might be overshadowed by geopolitical concerns and the tense political situation in its main host nation. \n\n\n\nWill the 2026 World Cup showcase the beautiful game at its brightest and best? Or will it be dimmed by corruption and manipulation to further a domestic political agenda? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon RiddellAnchor and Correspondent for CNN International’s World Sport Program\nDon Ridder is an award-winning anchor and correspondent for World Sport\, working out of CNN’s global headquarters in Atlanta.  \n\n\n\nAfter joining CNN in 2002\, Riddell has become one of the network’s longest-serving and most versatile anchors\, having also presented the long-running feature show Living Golf as well as news programs World News and CNN Today. As such\, his interest lies at the intersection of sport\, culture\, technology\, and politics.  \n\n\n\nFrom match-fixing in football to competition manipulation\, athlete abuse\, and ‘sports washing\,’ Riddell’s brief at CNN extends far beyond simply the results and the highlights.  \n\n\n\nSoccer lies at the heart of his passion; he covered the controversial buildup to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and a successful tournament on the ground. He attended the draw for the 2026 tournament in Washington D.C.\, and will be heavily involved in covering FIFA’s expanded tournament across North America this summer.  \n\n\n\nRiddell works across platforms\, broadcasting on television and writing complementary coverage for CNN.com. He has reported on stories from dozens of countries\, speaking to many of the world’s top athletes and profiling stories as diverse as match-fixing and the emergence of eSports. He has covered the Olympics\, the Super Bowl\, all four golf majors\, the Ryder Cup\, various ‘fight nights’ in Las Vegas\, Wimbledon\, the Rugby World Cup\, the Tour de France\, and many Champions League Finals.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to sports\, Riddell has also covered many diverse news stories\, from the Chapecoense plane crash in Brazil to the Royal Wedding in London. From the studio\, he has covered earthquakes\, terror attacks\, and the obituary coverage of Muhammad Ali. He has profiled a variety of personalities from astronauts to prime ministers\, holocaust survivors\, and even the world’s tallest man.  \n\n\n\nRiddell has a bachelor’s degree with honors in Public Media/Communication and Cultural Studies from Leeds University.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:"Claude McKay: Wandering the World" | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Alliance Française Atlanta and Georgia State University for a screening of the documentary “Claude McKay: Wandering the World”\, directed by Matthieu Verdeil. \n\n\n\nAt the crossroads of Black literary consciousness and political struggle\, Claude McKay helped lay the groundwork for major literary movements\, including Negritude. A politically committed poet with a bohemian spirit\, he moved through New York’s literary circles\, Parisian salons\, Soviet intellectual life\, and Black diasporic communities in places like Marseille\, forging connections with figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Leon Trotsky. Shaped by these global encounters\, McKay developed a radical philosophy that anticipated its time. This film traces his remarkable life across four continents\, exploring early twentieth-century currents of Black pride\, Marxism\, and the Harlem Renaissance through an immersive portrait of the 1920s and 1930s\, visually inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and animated by jazz. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be in French with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nFollowed by a panel moderated by Curt Jackson\, PhD\, from the GSU History Department\, including: \n\n\n\n\nMatthieu Verdeil\, Filmmaker\n\n\n\nEdvige Jean-Francois\, Executive Director of GSU Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora\n\n\n\nRashana Lydner\, Assistant Professor at GSU Africana Studies Department\n\n\n\nDr. Harcourt Fuller\, Associate Professor at GSU History Department\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch Trailer

SUMMARY:Global Media Festival 2026: The Dating Game
DESCRIPTION:The Dating Game (China\, 2025)Film screening and Q&A session with film director Violet Du Feng \n\n\n\nThe film offers a candid and often humorous look at China’s contemporary dating scene\, shaped by the long-term demographic effects of the one-child policy. \n\n\n\nFollowing three men navigating a highly competitive and uneven marriage market\, the film explores how modern ideas of masculinity\, self-presentation\, and intimacy collide with deeply personal desires for connection. Through moments that are both absurd and deeply human\, the documentary invites viewers to reflect on the pressures of performing identity in the search for love—and on the universal longing to be seen and understood. \n\n\n\nFree Chinese food will be provided! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer
