SUMMARY:U.S. - Mexico: The Road Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Join the World Affairs Council for a cocktail reception and dinner discussion with Mexican Ambassador Gerónimo Gutiérrez Fernández\, who will share the latest on U.S.-Mexico relations and the road ahead in conversation with Gabriela Frías\, CNN news anchor. \nSince NAFTA went into effect in 1994\, U.S.-Mexican trade has increased 500% with two-way trade totaling $523 billion in 2016\, U.S. tourism to Mexico has soared\, and net Mexican immigration has dropped to zero. U.S.\, Mexican and Canadian trade negotiators have completed three rounds of talks as we try to modernize NAFTA. Of one thing there is no doubt\, what happens in Mexico directly impacts Atlanta and Georgia businesses.

SUMMARY:Chanticleer\, chorus
DESCRIPTION:Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its twelve male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature\, from Renaissance to jazz\, and from gospel to venturesome new music. A perennial patron favorite\, nowhere does “America’s a cappella pride and joy” (Classics Today.com) sound better than in Spivey Hall’s superb acoustics. \nExtending a long string of annual Spivey Hall appearances\, Chanticleer and its celebrated Atlanta-based music director\, William Fred Scott\, offer a program entitled Heart of a Soldier\, exploring a vast range of human emotion evoked by wartime experiences as expressed in music and verse from the Renaissance to the current day. \nTickets are priced at $65 (with discounts for subscribers\, groups\, students and Georgia educators)\, and are available for purchase now. \nA Season Opening Celebration reception for the entire audience in honor of Chanticleer\, hosted by the Spivey Hall Friends\, will cap off the afternoon. \nChanticleer’s Spivey Hall performance is made possible through the generosity of Spivey Hall Friends Concert Sponsors Lauren A. Benevich\, John W. Cooledge and Nick Jones.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Hands down\, Richard Wagner is the most controversial Western composer; absolutely no one in Western music continues to generate so much discussion. Each year more books about Wagner are published than any other figure in Western art. Wagner simply cannot be ignored; his music and his philosophy about Art are too important and their influence too far reaching. For example\, modern cinema is based directly on what Wagner put into practice with his “music dramas.” \nFor the first time\, “A Note on Opera” will focus on one particular composer – this titan and “bad boy” whom so many vilify\, idolize\, or some combination thereof. A two-hour lecture on Wagner cannot hope to be exhaustive\, but it will try to place him in the context of 19th-century Germany and the development of “German” opera as its own genre.\nDespite all Wagner’s personal flaws\, British commentator and critic Stephen Fry poses a good point: “I still believe\, as firmly as I believe anything\, that his work is important and on the side of the angels. It is fundamentally good.”\nTo be taught in English by David Kerr.\nNo pre-existing musical knowledge required.

SUMMARY:Author Talk With Jennifer Lin\, Author of 'Shanghai Faithful: Betrayal and Forgiveness in a Chinese Christian Family'
DESCRIPTION:Join the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library\, Monday\, October 9 as they welcome author Jennifer Lin for a discussion of her book “Shanghai Faithful: Betrayal and Forgiveness in a Chinese Christian Family”. \nThe program will be held at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum Theater at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. No reservations are needed. \nA Cappella Books will have copies of Shanghai Faithful available for purchase and signing. Shanghai Faithful is both a touching family memoir and a chronicle of the astonishing spread of Christianity in China. Five generations of the Lin family—buffeted by history’s crosscurrents and personal strife—bring to life an epoch that is still unfolding. \nMore on the book: \nA compelling cast—a poor fisherman\, a doctor who treated opium addicts\, an Ivy League-educated priest\, and the charismatic preacher Watchman Nee—sets the book in motion. Veteran journalist Jennifer Lin takes readers from remote nineteenth-century mission outposts to the thriving house churches and cathedrals of today’s China. The Lin family—and the book’s central figure\, the Reverend Lin Pu-chi—offer witness to China’s tumultuous past\, up to and beyond the betrayals and madness of the Cultural Revolution\, when the family’s resolute faith led to years of suffering. Forgiveness and redemption bring the story full circle. With its sweep of history and the intimacy of long-hidden family stories\, Shanghai Faithful offers a fresh look at Christianity in China—past\, present\, and future. \nFor more information call the Carter: Library at 404-865-7109. SUMMARY:Czech 'Schmitke' Film Screening and Screenwriter Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join the Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic in Atlanta\, The Czech School of Atlanta Honoring Karel Velan and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta for the screening of the award winning Czech Film “Schmitke.” \nThe evening will include a presentation from the movie’s screen writer\, Tomáš Končinský\, an extremely successful script writer of Czech Television programs and children books author. \nThe film is based on a short story by Končinský titled\, “Julius Schmitke slipped through death’s fingers like an awkward seal.” It is a story set somewhere between comedy and mystery\, somewhere in the fog of the Ore Mountains\, full of the atmosphere of this mysterious stretch of land\, its history and its people. But first of all it’s the story of the inner world of an aging\, clumsy man who is unable to participate in the world around him. He shows us a feeling that we all know in today’s ultra-fast virtual world. It’s a journey into the mind of an unfortunate man\, which makes us feel what we don’t allow ourselves to feel that much anymore. \nA wine and cheese reception will be served. \nThe film\, set in the Czech Republic\, will be screened in German with English subtitles. Length: 94 minutes. \n Admission: Complimentary
