SUMMARY:Global Media Festival 2026: Always
DESCRIPTION:ALWAYS (China\, 2025)Film Screening and Q&A session with film director Chen Deming. \n\n\n\nThe film offers an intimate portrait of children in a rural village in Hunan\, China\, who find a voice through poetry. Following Gong Youbin\, who grows up in poverty and apart from his mother\, the film traces how writing becomes a way to articulate inner thoughts and make sense of the world around him. Set against the realities of life in the countryside and limited resources\, the documentary reflects on childhood\, vulnerability\, and the gradual loss of innocence. In doing so\, it speaks directly to this year’s festival theme\, Empathy in a Fractured World\, highlighting how literature and art can open spaces for communication\, understanding\, and growth. \n\n\n\nFree food will be provided! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Global Media Festival 2026: Screening of Vieques: A Living Archive
DESCRIPTION:VIEQUES: A LIVING ARCHIVE (Puerto Rico\, 2025)Film Screening and Q&A session with film director Juan Carlos Rodriguez. \n\n\n\nThis documentary examines how a demilitarized community confronts social\, economic\, and environmental challenges. \n\n\n\nThe film focuses on the environmental and health costs of the US military presence while looking at the dilemmas of post-Navy Vieques. Tensions with the FWS underscore the colonial dilemmas created by federal lands in Vieques. \n\n\n\nTourism and gentrification present a threat to the prospects of a community- driven path to sustainable development. The toxic waste of the US Navy has compromised the future\, leaving Viequenses with all the uncertainties of an irreversible ecological crisis. \n\n\n\nLimited access to health services poses a risk for Viequenses\, a population with a higher cancer rate than the rest of Puerto Rico. This ecological and public health crisis has been aggravated by the loss of the only hospital after Hurricane Maria\, transforming Vieques’ situation into a prolonged disaster. \n\n\n\nA case-study of military training as slow-violence\, the story highlights the problems created by using Vieques as a bombing site\, as well as the challenges of cleaning up vast areas of an island polluted with toxic waste. It is an intimate meditation on the paradoxes of war\, memory\, historical change\, and social justice in the 21st Century. \n\n\n\nFree food will be provided! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

DESCRIPTION:The United States government made the decision to wage a military operation against the Islamic Republic of Iran on February 28th of this year. There are now discussions surrounding conflict escalation in a country that has 92 million people\, a land mass greater than California and Texas combined\, and around 1000 pounds of enriched uranium. The current and future foreign policy between the United States and the Middle East is fluid and dynamic. \n\n\n\nDr. Whitlark will discuss these factors and how this conflict may affect arms negotiations in the future in other regions and with other adversaries. \n\n\n\nPlease join for an invigorating discussion on nuclear proliferation in Iran\, and the United States desperate attempt to prevent Iran from getting The Bomb. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRachel WhitlarkAssociate Professor of International Affairs at Georgia Tech \nRachel Whitlark is a political scientist and associate professor of international affairs. Her interests lie within international security and foreign-policy decision making\, specifically including nuclear proliferation\, counter proliferation\, and military intervention.  \n\n\n\nMuch of her work investigates the role of the individual executive in foreign and security policy. Her book\, All Options on the Table: Leaders\, Preventive War\, and Nuclear Proliferation\, published in 2021 by Cornell University Press\, explores the use of preventive military force as a counter-proliferation strategy against adversarial nuclear programs and relies on archival research techniques. Additional projects examine the targeting of nuclear scientists as a counter-proliferation strategy\, the determinants of arms control negotiation success\, and presidential beliefs about nuclear coercion.  \n\n\n\nPrior to coming to Georgia Tech\, Dr. Whitlark held fellowships with the Project on Managing the Atom and International Security Program within the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government\, as well as with the Massachusetts Instate of Technology’s Security Studies Program.  \n\n\n\nDr. Whitlark received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the George Washington University\, holds a Master’s degree from Stanford\, and a B.A. also from George Washington. Professor Whitlark is originally from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
