SUMMARY:Germany as an Immigration Country: Lunch & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:“Germany as an Immigration Country: Labor Migration and the Refugee Influx” \n\nImmigration and migration issues are currently at the top of the political agenda as all parties prepare their strategies for the upcoming federal elections in which Chancellor Merkel seeks her fourth term. More narrowly\, the consequences of the refugee influx are passionately debated – a topic on which public opinion in Germany is sharply divided. More broadly\, Germany aims to establish itself as a modern country of immigration competing for global talent. The presentation will introduce the current situation\, give data on immigration in Germany\, and identify challenges ahead.\nDr. Cornelia Schu is the Managing Director\, as well as the Director of the Research Unit\, of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR). Before assuming her position at SVR \, she was the Project Manager at Stiftung Mercator’s Center for Science and the Humanities. Dr. Schu has extensive expertise on German immigration and integration policy. Since 2015\, she has served as a member of the expert group on immigration advising the government. Dr. Schu is an excellent speaker who has briefed out ACG Study Tours. She will discuss efforts to integrate the refugees into the German labor market. She holds a doctoral degree in German Studies from the University of Bonn.\nThis program was made possible by a generous grant through the European Recovery Program – Transatlantic Encounters.

SUMMARY:International Business Case Competition
DESCRIPTION:The International Business Case Competition is an annual event in which students from several different universities\, especially minority serving institutions are placed in groups to solve a real-world business problem. The challenge provides students with the opportunity to meet students from other universities as well as gain insight on real-world business issues. As the program provides each student with beneficial skills and experience\, it also has strict criteria that need to be followed. The students are assigned to teams of four students\, but with the requirement that every student from the team is from a different university and majoring in a distinct field area. This will allow students to work through multiple cross-cultural obstacles\, including different study habits\, learning methods\, and even diverse university cultures. The fields represented during the Case Competition are Finance\, Accounting\, Marketing\, and Management & Operations. \nAt the start of the first day\, the students are given the time to participate in a variety of events that are meant to build up their trust and familiarity with each other. Later\, each team is given their case and has the rest of the day to come up with the solution. On day two\, the teams stand in front of a panel of judges and present their solution to the case. \nThe International Business Case Competition is funded by the U.S. Department of Education with a goal of mounting the competitiveness in the global market. The competition not only allows students to work together in teams\, but it also prepares them to enter the global job market\, in which they will be confronted by actual business problems.

SUMMARY:Innovation Triangle: USA-Germany-Israel
DESCRIPTION:Germany\, USA and Israel have become leading countries regarding innovations and inventions. In no other country do companies apply for as many patents as in the US\, followed by Japan and Germany. Israel also has been known as an “innovation hub” for a long time. Even though some of the Israeli inventions and innovations are being patented in other countries\, extraordinary ideas are often born in Israel\, especially in the area of cybersecurity and mobile technology. \nThe 8th Annual AmCham Germany Business Day titled “Innovation Triangle: USA-Germany Israel” aims to show how the different (business) cultures in these three countries promote and enhance innovation. \nBy using specific case studies and examples\, company representatives from the US\, Germany\nand Israel will explain their different approaches. They will also discuss how\nthe countries’ cultures create fostering environments for innovation\, new ideas and their development\, as well as enable creative people to think laterally. In addition\, they will explain the key factors for their company’s success in light of innovation. \n1:30pm to 5:30pm\nBusiness Conference \n6:00pm – 8:30pm\nPresentation of\nU.S.-German Internship\nProgram and Dinner

SUMMARY:From Brexit to Trump
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Farage led the campaign that won the June 2016 referendum on Great Britain’s membership in the European Union. A member of the European Parliament\, Farage told the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)\, “We’ve got some very exciting elections coming up in the Netherlands\, in France\, in Germany.” His view is that with Brexit the people of the United Kingdom will regain control of their destiny. For Farage\, 2016 was the start of a global political revolution\, with a direct connection between Brexit and the election of Donald Trump. \nFarage enjoys being an incendiary political leader and his talk at the Commerce Club is likely to see fireworks. This must attend program will open a window into the thinking of the populist/nationalist movement that is ascendant in the United Kingdom and the United States. \nThe council is non-partisan\, and the speaker’s views do not necessarily reflect our own. We welcome the opportunity to be a platform where major global issues can be discussed in a calm atmosphere of mutual respect.
