SUMMARY:Beyond Oil in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The attack on the Aramco oil facilities. \nIt created alarm not only in Saudi Arabia\, but also in the United Arab Emirates and especially in Israel. It demonstrated the new capacity of the more accurate Iranian weapons systems and their strategy of using military force openly but through supposed surrogates giving Iran a fig leaf of deniability. \nThe withdrawal of US forces from northeast Syria and the direct intervention by Turkey appears to have worked to the advantage of Turkey\, Russia\, Iran and the government of Syria. How about civilians? \nThis is complex and no one better than Ambassador Thomas Pickering to unpack how the shift in US policy will affect the balance of power in the Middle East and how US policy will affect Iran’s development of nuclear weapons. \nAbout Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering \nHolds the rank of Career Ambassador\, the highest in the U.S. Foreign Service. In a diplomatic career spanning five decades\, he was U.S. ambassador to Israel\, the Russian Federation\, India\, El Salvador\, Nigeria\, Jordan and the United Nations. He also served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

SUMMARY:Moon Jae-in Government's Vision for the Korean Peninsula Peace Process - Transforming the DMZ into an International Peace Zone
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of World War II\, Korea was divided into two zones with the Soviets in the north and Americans in the south. On June 25\, 1950 North Korea invaded the South. United Nations’ forces responded\, countering the attack. Chinese intervention on November 1\, 1950 led to intensive warfare. An armistice was finally agreed to on July 27\, 1953. \nIn the years since\, violent incidents perpetrated by the North along the 38th Parallel\, in nearby waters\, and elsewhere have contributed to much tension on the Korean peninsula. North Korea’s bid to become a nuclear power continues in the face of South Korean and American efforts to dissuade the latest Kim to abandon his nuclear quest. \nMoreover\, three generations of despotic rule by the Kim family\, characterized by sham elections and a Stalinist totalitarian dictatorship\, have resulted in a nation that often confronts famine and a population that chronically suffers from malnutrition. A 2014 UN inquiry into human rights in North Korea concluded that\, “The gravity\, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world.” \nIn stark contrast to the dystopian North\, South Korea today is a vibrant democracy\, has highly developed economy\, with the world’s second best healthcare system\, and is a major global trading power. Ironically\, China\, which has long supported North Korea\, has become South Korea’s largest trading partner. \nACIR is honored to host Ambassador Chang Jae-bok\, Deputy Foreign Minister\, Republic of Korea\, who will discuss the “Moon Jae-in government’s Vision for the Korean Peninsula Peace process – Transforming the DMZ into an International Peace Zone.” \nAmbassador Chang Jae-bok was appointed Ambassador for Public Diplomacy at the Republic of Korea’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs in May 2019. \nPreviously\, he served as the Deputy Minister for Protocol Affairs and as the Ambassador for the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. He also served as Director for the Human Rights and Social Affairs Division as well as the Protocol Division\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Overseas\, his most recent post was as the Consul-General of Korea in Milan and before that as the deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO in Paris. He was also posted in the Korean Embassies in France\, the Swiss Confederation\, the Republic of Ghana as well as the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. \n\nRegistration fee includes a 3-course luncheon.\nThe Luncheon/Discussion will take place in the Alexandria Room.\nThe luncheon will be followed by a reception\, hosted by the Consulate of the Republic of Korea\, with the ambassador and his team.

DESCRIPTION:Year of the Return to Africa: Business & Tourism \n400 years ago\, the first enslaved Africans arrived in the U.S. \nToday\, the Ghanaian government has initiated an ambitious campaign “The Year of Return” as a way to help connect members of the African diaspora with their ancestral homes. Ghana joined last may the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)\, which is the world’s largest free trade area in the world since the creation of the World Trade Organization.  How are Ghana and other African countries positioning themselves within the global market with an emphasis on the tourism industry? What challenges do they face concerning national security and international relations\, and what opportunities are possible for the continent as a whole to thrive in business? \nLet’s remember the year of 1619. \nJoin for a reception and discussion with Amini Kajunju\, Executive Director of the IUGB Foundation\, and Matilda Arhin\,President of Ghana International Chamber of Commerce.

SUMMARY:The International Cyber Drill Experience: Cross-Border Breach
DESCRIPTION:For many organizations with a global presence or international transactions\, having to deal with a personal data breach under data protection and privacy regulations\, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in EU law\, often requires parallel notification requirements to other regulatory authorities or bodies in multiple jurisdictions. Navigating multiple regulatory frameworks requires cross-border and cross-office awareness and cooperation by a team that has a clear understanding of the overall picture. Working in silos cannot be an option\, and some preparatory work and training is necessary. \nJoin Baker Donelson\, Trevelino/Keller\, and Secure Merger for a high-energy interactive cyber security breach simulation that puts the audience members in the c-suite and guides them through the 72-hour action and response drill. \nWith the help of their breach response advisory team consisting of legal\, forensic and crisis communications\, fast-paced decisions will be made as participants respond to new developments in the cyber crisis from a cross border perspective\, under time pressure\, with incomplete facts. The drill will address issues surrounding regulatory scrutiny\, rogue employees\, negative press\, social media storms and reputational issues with customers\, employees\, partners and prospects. The end result – insight into real world scenarios and participants will leave with actionable information that they can take back to their organization to raise awareness and share their experience making it more cyber secure.
